It all depends on how you're feeling over the shot. Sometimes my chipping is on point, and I get good results. Sometimes it's the putter. This area is way to feely-touchy to try to make an absolute call. JM2C. BTW, glad to see you back on the course!
It's a brilliant course...tough but fair and utterly beautiful! A must play and not as pricey as the "premium" links courses in let's say England and Scotland!
It's still pricey, but better value than courses rated lower than it. (Close House barely scrapes into the English top 100 (not the UK one!) And costs at least 40 quid more.
Not really. Apart from all the usual links hallmarks like pot bunkers, fast, firm fairways, slopey greens etc, I'd say Royal Porthcawl is pretty unique. Setting is magic, sea views from every hole on the course and a historic clubhouse. Bloody lovely.
Great play Rory, as I said before your driving is really on it bar the par 5, putter or chip, I use both methods due to what I've got in front of me, if chip and running I use 7,8,9, PW depending on how I feel the shot could play out.
Thanks! Yep driver has been a good boy for a long time now...need to sharpen up the iron play though! Good to hear you mix it up...the secret point of the video is to challenge golfer's obsession with blindly believing the old cliches that we hear around the game all too often. Is a bad putt better than a bad chip? Sometimes. 😉
During the summer I've gone the oposite way, I play on a links style course, with a lot of bare very firm lies, I've found I can get much closer with my putter... Come the winter I'm sure itl go back the other way.
@@yourgolftravel definitely, I think there's definitely more confidence in using the putter, rather than the thin bullet wedge into the car park, keep up the great work Playa ⛳👊😎
As stated in the vid the experiment was quite tongue in cheek and the rules were set at the start but that putt on the 2nd wasn't all that mad. Only a couple of inches of semi rough to putt "over" as it was sat right on top of it. Haha yeh thin bullets don't come up too much these days...but the duffs are still very much there on the bad days haha!

I was taught that as soon as you can use a putter use it. As long as you get the pace right you can’t go far wrong. Too many thoughts when chipping. But then again I’m not the most confident chipper !!
I think this little, limited sample size test maybe shows that too. Bang average putts vs good chips it was pretty close in terms of proximity to the hole.

Posted this somewhere else but cant find it! So Rory you have played many more courses than me so let's have your best eclectic 18 golf holes you have played. I could list mine but yours will be more interesting I'm sure.
Wow...tough question so apologies if I miss any out...I've also not ordered these or paid much attention to par etc, just picked my favourite 18 holes off the top of my head. 👍 1 - Extreme 19th in South Africa (Helicopter to and from the tee hole) 2 - 9th at Pinnacle Point 3 - 9th at Turnberry (Ailsa Course) 4 - 10th at Turnberry (Ailsa Course) 5 - 16th at Tralee 6 - 14th at Royal Portrush 7 - 6th at Bay Hill 8 - 11th at Quinta do Lago (Laranjal Course) 9 - 10th at The Belfry (Brabazon Course) 10 - 5th at Casa de Campo (Teeth of The Dog Course) 11 - 13th at Kiawah Island (Ocean Course) 12 - 13th at Monte Rei 13 - 5th at PGA Catalunya (Stadium Course) 14 - 12th at Druids Glen 15 - 13th at Druids Glen 16 - 18th at Leopard Creek 17 - 16h at Vale do Lobo (Royal Course) 18 - 17th at Bay Hill I've left out soooooooooooooo many and could've spent many hours coming up with a more accurate! 😂 This list is also pretty great: www.yourgolftravel.com/19th-hole/best-holes-in-golf-the-ultimate-18/
I used to always grab my putter as soon as I could. No confidence in my chipping. But then I started using my 7/9 irons using a putting stroke. Bingo! Balls trundle to the hole instead of trying to roll thru the sticking fringe grass.
To putt from the rough on the second never looked like an option to me. Surely always a chip from there? Maybe it’s just me not seeing things though.. and maybe why you’re off 7 and I ain’t 😂
Hence why I explained it was a tongue in cheek kinda silly experiment and I'd actually chip from there in normal play. The chip won...so was the right option that time out! But what if I'd duffed it? Bunker shot for my 3rd...that is kind of the point I was making...
Unless I'm on the green I chip... Mostly with a pw for a chip n run but I judge distances better Chipping than putting from off the green or even off the fringe if the flag is 20ft+ away. I would rather have had a leg amputated than putt that ball out the rough around the bunker. That would have been my sw everytime. I think your decent chips aren't as good as my mediocre chips though 😝
Haha...obviously this "test" was a super small sample size but I still think it showed some potentially gains in the putting on a links course...my really good chipping on the day ruined the game haha! Couple of duffs / thins and it's a VERY different test eh?!
Are you still doing stuff with Crossfield and Lockey? I wouldnt say chipping 1 Putting 0, your line with the putt was questionable eh?? Just saying, the putt and chip lines are totally different in that scenario, but generally I think the chip on that hole was defo the right decision!!
Putting lines will always be different to chipping lines I just got the putt wrong slightly which I guess is the whole point of the test. Would've made a 5 off the putt option too.
A lot more can go wrong with a chip from a tight lie off the green than a putt from the same spot. Amateurs are a horror show with the delicate shots around the green. If you want to eliminate a disaster on your card (a flubbed chip or a 'thin bullet' :) ) - hitting a putt may be a safer play, one that takes the big number off the table.... even if that means you do not get the putt as close as you generally might a chip.
Well played Rory, putting God!! Beautiful natural look to those fairway bunkers, nice touch by the club.
Agreed! On the bunker thing...such a great contrast and best of both worlds. Putting God thing...just had a good few holes me thinks haha.
Playing well Rory! Putting when ever it is an option. I only use the wedge from in the bunker or when I'm trying to get over one.
Fair enough bruh...do whatever is comfortable for you! Yeh playing pretty good...can it last haha? See you in Part 2...
@@yourgolftravel Your chipping has come on a long way since your trip to La Manga with Crossfield and Lockey.

Excellent video Rory, course looks very playable even if off line unlike other links where off line the ball will never again be seen!

Hitting them well Rory. I agree with the comment for Links style courses, of which I haven't played a lot. Parkland I'd have to go 50/50.
