Bows in general really need much better scaling. They're fine in new game, but you'll really notice how weak they are in ng+. Going with bleed is the only real option you have. Even a throwing knife build is better in ng+ than bows.
True. Also some of the arrows not being buyable and/or taking way too long to farm is pretty shitty. I used cheat engine to itemgib 600 stormhawk arrows and 600 spiritflame arrows, and playing with those + a fully upgraded black bow on a 55 dex build has felt really nice in pve... but it took cheat engine to make that the case 😕
@@cleverexpert2 Fr, its DS1 variant used to get an S scaling in every upgrade path, except for fire, chaos, lightning and raw (and it still got an A with the latter). Such a massive nerf for a better moveset...
Tbh I dont think bows would be a great gameplay. I do understand that people want them but I feel like it would make cheesing bosses unavoidable. I think they would have to balance around bows too much. Any boss that doesnt have nay punishment mechanic for ranged builds or a gap closer would be too easy to beat with a bow. And bosses that are too active and close up in your face would be absolutely annoying to fight at which point why are you even playing a bow build when you are in melee range and dont need any ammo for melee.
throwing knifes can hit for 800? in most souls games bows weren't meant as main weapons. elden ring is the strongest i remember them being since maybe demon souls.
Light bows don't slow you down on horseback when firing, so there is that. The Black Bow, which functions mostly as a light bow, does not on horseback.
I think you're underestimating greatbows a little bit as far as direct combat goes, a great arrow will knock anything Omen-sized or smaller off their feet. It's not viable at all for multiple enemies, but it is quite fun to bully greatshield-wielding knights by repeatedly sending them flying whenever they try to attack. Again, this is more of a gimmicky way to fight things rather than an actually effecient tactic.
Greatbow with Rain of Arrows is quite fun in PVP invasions, as it allows you to shoot from behind walls and/or cover, provided you have a lock on your target.
Didnt mention how the through and through animation doesn't have to be recast everytime, if you keep pressing the arrow fire button you'll fire great arrows like barrage
Another advantage with the Harp Bow is that it's the lightest projectile weapon there is in the game. Even though it's damage won't impress anyone, it's still very practical for utility purpose.
You can also do a jumping / landing attack with greatbows to ready an arrow a little faster! It's not the craziest thing but it definitely can help during boss fights or pvp, especially if you're jumping backwards.
I make people stop in their tracks with my Albinauric Bow... well, it probably helps that I am invading in the Spiritcaller Cave with Phantom Great Rune buffed doggos. There are even times where I just instantly kill someone with rain of blood arrows, hilarious seeing it happen to this one dude casting Elden Stars. I have a dex stat of 71 (and 20 vigor because idgaf about diminishing returns). Actually, before I was constantly invading the Spiritcaller Cave, I was using a Horned Bow set with Enchanted Arrows. Always great to see a host take a huge chunk of damage. Even greater seeing a dude instantly die from an over 1700 damage Moonveil L2 when they think they can just simply approach me and wipe me out. I feel my Vigor being as low as it has been has made me more interested in using ashes of war like Transient Blade and Corpse Piler, there's a thrill of knowing you're wet paper to the competition. Could be the White Reeds armor, but there's a surprising amount of things you can survive, (and a surprising amount you can hold for just 20 endurance). This started because I wanted to do a for fun cosplay of Chitose Karasuma, pilot of GA-006 Sharp Shooter from Galaxy Angel, and I really NEED to play the PC version.
I know this is an older video, but Serpent Bow got buffed back when the Arcane scaling of weapons got fixed. This is pretty huge with that bow, as it doesn't add extra poison per shot it just adds ARCANE SCALING to arrows. I tested a Black Bow +9 with an non-upgraded Serpent Bow in the Mountaintops of Giants vs a Troll. Black Bow using Serpent Arrows took 5 regular shots before poison was applied. Serpent Bow using Serpent Arrows took 2. Black Bow using Fletched Blood Arrows took 6 regular shots before bleed was applied. Serpent Bow using Fletched Blood Arrows took 3. Considering Barrage skill has about 33% less damage per shot or so, this would mean using Barrage with the Black Bow would apply Poison in approx ~8 shots, and bleed with ~9 shots. I think, for a PvE standpoint, it might be worthwhile to invest into the Serpent Bow if you are running an arcane build and need a ranged option as it appears to be the most ammo-efficient. A higher ammo economy means less time farming for resources to make more arrows. Would I use it in PvP? Probably not, PvP's speed almost always requires the Shortbow moveset (aka the Black Bow) but it might have application in some arena fights.
But both the arrows and AoW and Lion Greatbow count as "gravity attack" and deals 40% more damage to otherwordly-type enemy, like Onyx Lords, Star Beast and Asteel
So basically Composite bow if you want to change ash of war Black bow if you want most damage and best moveset Pulley bow if you wanna snipe probably best for melee quality builds Lion greatbow for any greatbow or radahns for big bosses

Shield next could be interesting. Fingerprint shield is actually very broken, especially for anything that can be inflicted with madness since combined with shield crash you can basically just spam that and stunlock them. You can infuse it with heavy for raw damage or bleed for really good bleed buildup. Even with the nerf to its effectiveness with greatshield talisman it still will tank attacks from late game bosses with ease.

you can use arrow rain in doors, also its more effective then because it will lower the spawn point of the rain burst thus you can hit smaller enemies, essentially outside its a cone of about 5 to 8 meters area where it spews the arrows but when you are indoors and have lower cealing or there is an obstruction above the enemy you can use arrow rain and it will spawn point of the rain will be just above the enemy and you will get a 1-2 meter area of arrows and sometimes they just all hit the head of the enemy killing it almost instantly
I wish I saw this when you first posted it, but I waited for some patches to take effect before getting Elden Ring (and I'll be waiting until 1.06 to get into PVP). Let me offer some wisdom on the Red Branch Shortbow: You mentioned that it has a lower STR cost than Comp Bow, but otherwise it is an overall worse bow. Have you considered taking the extra points you put into STR, and putting them into DEX instead? How would the numbers look then? THAT is what you should be looking at with the Red. If someone is not speccing into STR, then they're speccing elsewhere. The bow scales better with DEX than it does STR. If you use the quality build as a basis for which you judge weapons, you will misjudge a great deal of weapons. Revisit your testing strategies.
Great video, but the reason why light bows are more mobile is because that is their purpose, being light and fast for peppering. Your longbows are for sniping. Not mobility. Just throwing it out there. I do wish affinity and and ashes were more versatile. Even just having kick on a shortbow would be so helpful.
Both of the Holy bows have excellent utility in Ending Death Birds and the Undead in Farum Azula. the Golem Greatbow with the ultra Rare Magic Arrows is great with the Mimic Set up. (Elden Beast or Astel Fight come to Mind. I cringe everytime he says kinda useless. hahhah.
All regular bows have quick jumping attacks, which makes short bows utterly useless. You snipe and surprise attack with the golem greatbow, you do everything else with the best regular bow available until you get the black bow.
Great review, thank you for going over all these - such a painful process, but it had to be done, right? For a fun alternative to this sad state of affairs (if you play offline and want to be an archer) I'd suggest trying the Ranged Weapons Rework mod over at Nexus. It brings some much needed buffs, scaling, affinities, and alternate ashes of war to bows, making them a lot more effective.
@@higguma not infused - per se - but given an Ash. The only real good choice is the Rain of Arrows, with Dwelling Arrows. Uses 1-Arrow up, but can cause 1000-ish dmg if multiple arrows hit a single foe

Bows are so lame. The difference in damage between the cheapest bow with the cheapest arrows and the best bow with the best arrows is 50 damage. Sure, you can do more with a greatbow single shot, and you can get more dps with the black bow, but overall the bows range from bad to worse.

Got me over some of the toughest field bosses in the game (Caelid Bell Hunter / Full grown falling starbeast / Caelid Erdtree Avatar / Dragon infront of Beast Sanctum ) by poison and blood arrows. Just the poison arrows if the enemy is immune to bleed.
I like bows, use it on all my runs (as a secondary weapon, of course.....). Golem Greatbow (despite the excessive weight!) hit like a truck in a strength build and it is super fun. I end up finishing several bosses with him.
Sorry to knock you, but the Black Bow does not Compare to the Utility of the Horn Bow, Erdtree Bow, and the Serpent Bow, Plus all three of the bows I mentioned have special Ammo. with the Horn bow getting a Bonus on all magic Arrows.
i wish theyd raise the range on all bows to pulley bow cause that just outshines every other bow by so much. even if your going short range having the longer range option is just way better. 27482 bows in the game and with one being better by so much most of the rest are pointless. except maybe serpent if your like a bleed build.
From has always neglected bows. Not sure why. They are usually pretty weak outside 1 or 2 greatbows. They seem more like fancy rocks as they pretty much serve the same purpose, to draw out enemies rather than being an actual archer build. I assume From thinks it will be way too easy since you get much better range and accuracy then spells/incantations
Barrage is used for status effects, not for damage. Light bows are used for close range, hence why they have so many move set options. Long bows are for ranged fighting. If FromSoft would actually make bows more viable it would really open up more build options. It's a shame they view them as gimmick weapons. And crossbows are complete trash. You can't even aim them ffs.
@@captaincobalt2111 Actually, I think the bows compliment the swordplay of samurai builds neatly. Get dangerous enough with a bow and people will try to charge you and kill you, many have died to my Moonveil despite me being only 20 vigor because my dex sits at 71 and my Int stat at 60 (150 build btw calling it the Sellian Samurai). Only the THICKEST of builds usually survive Moonveil, and they still stagger, leading to the big guessing game.
if you find yourself never using the bow it is fun to clear the whole upper branch section of the haligtree, only time I broke out a bow and it was fun sniper mini level... ps. I didnt get the good bubble horn before i burned it all, does it drop from the 2 snowmen in the upper branches aswell?
Rain of arrows works inside. And counterintuitive as it may be it actually works better. For some reason it concentrates the arrows in a tight area, destroying whatever your locked on to
Idk running the right setup and hitting weak points make bows pretty strong dual exultation talismans white mask or mushroom crown raptor chest piece arrow sting doesn't get buffed by dagger talismans but works with regular buffs on ng+7 and they still shred good luck in pvp tho
If you want to maximize dmg double lion bow for rhadahn rain or 1 lion 1 golem and albenuric or black bow just remember that the higher physical damage you have the better the percentages help and ffs stop using blue talismans
Spear talisman works with bows as well but shard of Alexander is a solid choice or sacrificial talisman don't use the arrow range talisman unless you want it for rhadahns rain for whatever reason honestly feel like dmg is more useful than range
Did you really say that you don’t get the erdtree great bow till late game. It is literally the first great bow you have access to. You didn’t try it out at all, you just looked it up on the wiki and made your judgement there. Your other criticisms were valid. But the whole “late game” thing was just stupid.
Why on earth the crossbows can be more powerful and useful than bows despite their lack of scaling is beyond me. One would think that bows should outperform them with the proper investment.

What I got out of this video is, every bow sucks. I lost track of the amount of times you said "There's pretty much no reason to use this bow. " or "This is the best sniping option." Doesnt help that the black bow was dethroned and gutted to hell in its scaling compared to previous games. Now pulley is the best scaling wise

Radahn can snipe you from miles and that one enemy npc on liurna tower has spells with infinite range. What's up with that?
The status build up in the serpent bow does increase... not on rot arrows tho, but it does in bleed, poison and sleep

With the Serpent bow l, serpent arrow and a decent arcane stat you can inflict poison in a single shot. It's a great way to start a boss fight.

Sorry to knock you, but the Black Bow does not Compare to the Utility of the Horn Bow, Erdtree Bow, and the Serpent Bow, Plus all three of the bows I mentioned have special Ammo. with the Horn bow getting a Bonus on all magic Arrows.

i wish theyd raise the range on all bows to pulley bow cause that just outshines every other bow by so much. even if your going short range having the longer range option is just way better. 27482 bows in the game and with one being better by so much most of the rest are pointless. except maybe serpent if your like a bleed build.
Enchanted shots are great if you wanna mess around in multiplayer, it’s a recommended from me as your arrow will just turn into a homing missile lol
From has always neglected bows. Not sure why. They are usually pretty weak outside 1 or 2 greatbows. They seem more like fancy rocks as they pretty much serve the same purpose, to draw out enemies rather than being an actual archer build.
I assume From thinks it will be way too easy since you get much better range and accuracy then spells/incantations
Barrage is used for status effects, not for damage. Light bows are used for close range, hence why they have so many move set options. Long bows are for ranged fighting.
If FromSoft would actually make bows more viable it would really open up more build options. It's a shame they view them as gimmick weapons. And crossbows are complete trash. You can't even aim them ffs.

Funny thing is that samurai were primarily mounted archers for most of Japan's history. Weird that FS doesn't like bows that much.
@@captaincobalt2111 Actually, I think the bows compliment the swordplay of samurai builds neatly. Get dangerous enough with a bow and people will try to charge you and kill you, many have died to my Moonveil despite me being only 20 vigor because my dex sits at 71 and my Int stat at 60 (150 build btw calling it the Sellian Samurai). Only the THICKEST of builds usually survive Moonveil, and they still stagger, leading to the big guessing game.
if you find yourself never using the bow it is fun to clear the whole upper branch section of the haligtree, only time I broke out a bow and it was fun sniper mini level... ps. I didnt get the good bubble horn before i burned it all, does it drop from the 2 snowmen in the upper branches aswell?

Rain of arrows works inside. And counterintuitive as it may be it actually works better. For some reason it concentrates the arrows in a tight area, destroying whatever your locked on to

From Scaled Bows off Max Stats. Which was a mistake for misleading new Players. they are definitely underpowered but have alot of Utility.

Idk running the right setup and hitting weak points make bows pretty strong dual exultation talismans white mask or mushroom crown raptor chest piece arrow sting doesn't get buffed by dagger talismans but works with regular buffs on ng+7 and they still shred good luck in pvp tho
If you want to maximize dmg double lion bow for rhadahn rain or 1 lion 1 golem and albenuric or black bow just remember that the higher physical damage you have the better the percentages help and ffs stop using blue talismans
Pulley crossbow does dummy status proc and great for close range
Spear talisman works with bows as well but shard of Alexander is a solid choice or sacrificial talisman don't use the arrow range talisman unless you want it for rhadahns rain for whatever reason honestly feel like dmg is more useful than range

Did you really say that you don’t get the erdtree great bow till late game. It is literally the first great bow you have access to. You didn’t try it out at all, you just looked it up on the wiki and made your judgement there. Your other criticisms were valid. But the whole “late game” thing was just stupid.
Why on earth the crossbows can be more powerful and useful than bows despite their lack of scaling is beyond me. One would think that bows should outperform them with the proper investment.

What I got out of this video is, every bow sucks. I lost track of the amount of times you said "There's pretty much no reason to use this bow. " or "This is the best sniping option."
