Men should take this kind of pain seriously

It's difficult when it happens as a minor and the adults responsible for you don't believe you when you tell them you're in pain or sick. In my case, strangulated testes & appendicitis at 15, both times it was a neighbour who told them I probably needed medical attention.

That first story - absolutely NOT. I was ONE WEEK into a relationship when I got really sick at work while covering a night shift. My manager wanted to call an ambulance, but I freaked out at the thought of ending up at hospital with nobody by my side in the middle of the night, so she called my boyfriend. He got up and drove across town at 2am, then across town again to take me to the hospital, and in the end took me home and stayed until he was sure I was alright. I knew there and then that he was the one, it's been 14 years ❤

That's adorable, but the situation listed is totally different.
I personally wouldn't want my inebriated partner to commit a crime and pick me up, to take me to the hospital. 🤣
With how the night is going at that point, there will be a cop at the emergency covered drive-thru, who arrests my partner and slaps them with a DUI 😭😂🤣
I really do feel for the guy, but he literally said a version of what a bunch of people are going to text their partners tonight, in a 'hehe let's go find a closet 😈 wtf fck are you doing, hey home faster!' way.
I'm REALLY feeling less sorry by the moment, that he took any lasting pain in his genitals as a "this is fine to hedge on my drunk girlfriend at her bffs clubbing birthday girls night"......
He needs to grow up and take his health seriously. Being embarrassed doesn't cut it in my book.

@B.Harper7 Joanna wasn't talking about transportation. She was comparing being in a scary medical emergency with and without a loving support system. OP's GF was within a few minutes walking distance, and she would have been able to ride in the ambulance with him and be there after surgery, just to be there for him! But she chose to block him. Joanna had only a Two Week relationship, yet he was willing and did, get out of bed, just to be supportive! OP was with his partner for several years!

The part where she blocked him was so devastating. Him even overthinking to keep her, is sad.
This was such a controlling move from her.
Five years don’t matter at this point. He is young enough to find a girlfriend that cares.
Being drunk isn’t an excuse either. Whatever resentment made her think this bad about her own boyfriend needs to be checked out and worked on.
Hopefully she learns from this. But the trust is seriously damaged after something like that.

My husband and I actually have a safe word for instances specifically like this. We joke around so much to the point where we've agreed on a word for when we're actually serious. I feel like it has saved us from so many problems or issues that stem from misunderstandings especially through text/messaging apps when messages can be grossly misconstrued. I love you by the way and love your channel! You seem so down to Earth and I always appreciate your viewpoint on all these different topics 😊 thank you for being such a positive influencer!

Going to start doing this with my husband! We have a safe word for when we’re about to say something that might have a big emotional impact on the other person. We say, “Walrus” and the other person knows to take a second to evaluate how they feel about what the person is saying before reacting. It has stopped so many fights before they start. But an emergency word like you have would also be soooo useful.

My Mother was from Finland, but lived in Canada from her mid-twenties. She went to the opera once, and two girls behind her were saying very nasty things in Finnish. About her, my father, the other audience members, the opera, etc etc. At the end of the opera, she stood up, turned around and said (in Finnish) how lovely the opera was, wasn’t it? My Mom said it was one of the most satisfying things, ever! I can only imagine how satisfying it must have been to do that to your in-laws!

One of the best things my wife and I did before we married was clearly spell out our expectations and deal-breakers. No cheating, no name calling (no matter how mad), always make the effort to listen, always supportive (meaning we are each other's number one, no matter what), either trust each other or don't, and give no reason to make either insecure, to name a few. We have been together over 20 years now and I'm proud to say, still very much in love. Having something happen like this early (relatively speaking) on, and the opportunity to spell out those expectations might make the relationship healthier. Or, if you can't agree on those expectations and trust issues, then part ways now.

The first story was changed to paint op in a better light. I remember when it was posted months ago and I responded to it within a couple hours of it being up. At the time op admitted to previously pranking his gf to the point that she'd scream at him sometimes, but he said something like that was a part of the fun. Ngl both op and his gf kinda suck. And his message was more along the lines of "Come home. Balls hurt" followed by her declinging his calls and laughing at him. "Going to the hospital, something is wrong" followed by missed calls and him being blocked. This has the vibes of someone tired of being bothered on their nights out having their no contact behavior thrown back at them when an actual emergency arrises.

About 7 years ago, I had an issue with my appendix, didn't know it at the time, just had extreme pain in my abdomen and a fever.
Now, I'm terrified of injection needles (and I mean to the point I can pass out from stress from them), so when I went through triage at A&E and they took blood, I freaked out internally but tried to play it cool on the outside. When they said they'd be keeping me overnight and they needed to put in a cannula I almost burst into tears.
I rang my boyfriend at around 12am, crying and freaking out. He lived about 40 minutes away and was there for me in 30. He stayed the whole night with me and called out of work the next day to continue staying with me.
*That's* how you react to your partner calling for a medical emergency.

OMG I have to get my appendix removed!
I called my bf at work to talk about it and at first I played it down saying it's probably just cramps or a tummy ache, but he just in case he was coming home, took me to the hospital and the worse it could was Appendicitis... and it was.
He came nearly every day to just sit and watch over me like a guard dog, I was very sleepy after surgery and could barely move without pain.
I agree that's how partners should be.

They've both had to be rushed to the ER on separate occasions, and each time I've seen how they are each other's best advocate and caretaker. My dad has taken my mom to the hospital in the middle of the night, and my mom has done the same for him. They're both the types that will minimize their own pain but when it comes to other people? Oh they definitely take it serious. Whenever I feel sick my parents are more concerned than I am, and it can get overwhelming but it's much appreciated compared to people that will minimize your pain.

Everybody is TA in that situation. Dutch is my first language and abroad not many Dutch people realize I can understand them. So when STRANGERS are talking sh*t in an elevator or something, the nodding and smiling thing is fine. Just saying goodbye in dutch when they get out can be hilarious.
However. WHY TF would you pretend not to speak your family's language in their own country??? That's at best deceptive, I have much stronger language for that. Did she make them all speak English to her to keep up the weird charade? Something is seriously wrong with this lady. I understand why the in-laws don't like her. The pretending not to speak German is so awful and disturbing that I'm pretty sure she's rude and dishonest in many more ways. It's fine to pretend with strangers, but after getting to know people, not disclosing your knowledge is almost the equivalent of secretly recording them. It's not right.

My sister was learning the German language because she married a German and moving over there. What people don’t realize is that she started learning the language some people can be vicious. They did not like her name because it has a TH in her name and pronunciation for Germans is very difficult. The funny thing is she named her son a very nice Jewish name for a German boy and it has a TH in his name. 🤣

That night, I accidentally took my dog’s sedative instead of my medication because they were both white circular pills. I gave my dog his medication at the same time I took my evening meds and I got distracted (we do it at different times now because of this). I had to call poison control. I called my husband and told him what happened, and he raced home, in the middle of the movie to watch over me and make sure I was okay. He was watched over me for the rest of the night, as I fell asleep, and made sure I kept breathing, etc., he’s never said another word about it. Well later that evening I collapse on the floor, in horrific pain from my abdomen. Found out later my appendix burst. I actually call 911 first, and called her after. I called her three times, then texted "I called the ambulance, I'm on the way to the hospital, something is seriously wrong." I called her again and she blocked me. During the surgery hours later she called back. Then texted repeatedly. I found out the neighbors actually asked her why the ambulance was at my house. So she didn't even see my text until talking to them at 7:00am. I was not as forgiving as this guy in the video. I didn't tell her what hospital I was in. I told her to pack her stuff, get out of my house, and don't contact me again. We were together 5 year's, and I've never spoken to her again after that day.

As a New Zealander currently living in Australia where both countries have healthcare for all - employed, unemployed, disabled, retired, students, etc... It's free at the point of service as our usual income taxes cover it. We pay slightly less income tax than the US too. I've had genetic breast cancer 3 times. The care I received from my oncology team, nurses, cat scans, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, multiple surgeries and hospital stays, pathology tests, etc... $0. If I was in the US I'd be bankrupt or dead. I've heard that health insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions... I'd be screwed. Having my daughter also cost $0. I can't imagine having to consider the cost before seeking help. I sincerely hope your country changes its policy on health insurance. The Koch brothers did extensive research into the US healthcare system and found it'd be cheaper to do universal healthcare... But then the insurance companies wouldn't be paying their shareholders and directors massive dividends. 🙄

I can relate to the 2nd story…I grew up in a mostly Hispanic community in Southern California. I am light skinned and look full white but my mother is full Mexican so I am half Mexican and was raised to be fluent in both English and Spanish. My entire childhood was me being constantly talked about behind my back in Spanish because of my outward appearance they assumed I didn’t speak Spanish. I was very timid and didn’t confront people for a long time until one day I just got tired of hearing the constant demeaning comments(honestly felt like bullying) and that compiled with the fact that all my mom’s side of the family treat me poorly because I was too light skinned and blonde; well I finally snapped. A couple girls were sitting behind me in class and they were carrying on about me again so I just turned around slowly and gave them what must have been a disturbingly wide smile I said: “You know…I know what you’re saying about me. I’ve known this entire time. I wanted to say something before but I was raised by my Mexican mother to have respect for others and be classy. But I realized respect should be earned and classless doesn’t deserve class.” All of this I said nice and clearly in Spanish. The girls just looked at me open mouthed and wide eyed…speechless. I turned around and went back to my drawing which was my norm when we weren’t actively engaged in a lesson. Those girls never said one more thing about me(at least within earshot) and they quickly shattered whenever they saw me coming. Not sure if this counts as petty revenge but I was damn proud of myself that day.

What I had to do was break up, not risk the one time he did need me and I ignored him. I think it took a good year to stop worrying about him, despite going complete no contact. I don't think she might be cheating but there has been a surge of controlling partners, specifically boyfriends. Maybe if we give her the benefit of the doubt, probably her friends may have had this experience and influenced her. It was also her best friend’s birthday. However, she knows her boyfriend best. They've been together for 5 years. If he hadn't pulled up any cry-wolf situation, this should've been a sign for her to take things seriously. And I trust OP that he didn't pull these shenanigans.
Now again I do think it is break-up worthy. The club was so close, she could've at least walked in to check. I feel so deeply sorry for OP. He called that one person he trusts ( and probably believes that she will accompany him in sickness and health), and he was dismissed and even worse blocked. He deserves much better in this situation. And later during the conversation, she minimised his pain. A simple Google search can describe how testicular torsion feels like.

I was drunk and I wasn't using my best judgement. I genuinely thought you were joking. I'm so, so sorry, and I'm so glad you're okay. I'll never not take you seriously again." And she basically did say that, but only after minimizing what he went through and saying he couldn't have been in that much pain. Like...he literally had EMERGENCY SURGERY. Of course he was in pain! So yeah. That part is the nail in the coffin, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think the bloke in the first story is being honest. The fact that she thought he was joking or being overly dramatic sounds like there's been issues before with him. Plus, why would she block him? Wasn't she the greatest girl to him and get wants to marry her? They have been together for five years. If she was a 'blocking you and don't care' type of girl then there would already be red flags in that five years together. I think she blocked him because he's know for being a dramatic and her friend said ignore him - you know how he can be about you going out and having fun at clubs. There's so much to this story the bloke isn't saying. Healthy, nice people don't block there partners for no reason. It's got to be he's pulled guilt trip stuff before. The fact she stayed by his side for two days at the hospital afterwards says she's not an awful person. Yep, she messed up not taking him seriously but I'm convinced he's a 'boy that cried wolf' type and a bit of a poor me type. I'd like to hear the girlfriends side to make a complete judgement.

My husband went and partied with his family and his parents encouraged him to not take the paramedics seriously (eg. In-law emotional incest drama).
HOWEVER, we are still married and are actually happy. But only after years of therapy and a nearly getting a divorce did my husband realize how messed up his family was being. The trust had to be rebuilt, and I am still working through the trauma.

Oh man. Im so glad you shared the 2nd story. Ive just returned home to Australia from travelling with my partner in France to meet his family. His mum is french and his dad is kiwi but speaks french. They decided that they would stop speaking english halfway through the week leaving me feeling rejected and left out at every meal around the table. They were giving me lots of disgusted looks for the next few days. His mum started snatching kitchen items out of my hand when i tried to help. All so i would feel like an outcast. On the last night the tension is so high, ive been crying on my own for 3 days, my partner tried to talk to them but didnt communicate what they said about me until this day....they thought i was a nasty person. I went to say thank you for everything and their hospitality,,, they finally decide to yell and confront me in english letting me know what they thought of me: that i was a condescending snob, ungrateful and rude. That i treated their house like a hotel just because i was resting as much as i could (i was on vacation and my job is stressful working with kids!). They also said my partner, their son was selfish and ungrateful even though he cooked majority of the meals for the family (cousin and brother and his gf were there for half the week). We left in a taxi the next morning. The craziest thing was his mum looked me dead in the eye and was convinced i knew more french than i was letting on. I know basics, very basic and what i do know i made sure to have the pronounciation down pat. Howeever i didnt understand enough to follow the conversation at the table, and my partner failed to have my back and translate but he did try to defend me on that final night. We are still recovering and a part of me wants to learn French properly just so i can actually understand the tea next time and defend myself. Whew sorry this is so long, just happy to have a space where my story is relevant ❤

I studied abroad as a teen in a country where I didn’t know the language well at all (I really suck at Spanish, even after living there a year I spoke like a toddler). The feeling of not belonging because you can’t understand the conversation is a gut wrench. It must have been even worse in your case as you knew they spoke English and this was your SO’s family (my host family didn’t speak more than 5 words of English, they tried their best to include me and were angels). I wish you the best of luck in your language studies! But keep in mind, especially as you learn, that sometimes encountering words you aren’t expecting can really throw off your comprehension. That’s why, even if you know lots of words in a language it can take quite some time to be able to understand others talking (especially if they aren’t including you in the conversation, you would lack context).

For the first story: I'm an EMT, the ambulance people, and we receive calls for way smaller things than "my b**ls hurt." Not calling us when you're in extreme pain in lunacy and worrying. With this, there is also the worry about his "girlfriend." The moment I smell vomit in my apartment, I immediately make sure that my roommates are okay, rather than being mad that it smells. I can't imagine doing that to my roommate, much less my PARTNER. What must have been going through her head to not come when he texted. I can see why, as a female, your male partner saying "my b**ls hurt" could be sm*x related, but then that would legit just need a question of "are they actually hurting or is this an intimacy thing?" That's all that was needed. She clearly loves him, as shown by her worry when she did realize, but it also makes you think where he is on her totem pole if she doesn't put needs like that above partying. And the blocking, like, what the heck is that. If they're calling you non-stop and that's out of character for them, then it might be worth while to take a step back and check on them.

He'd call and call and call or text a million times. Nearing the end of the relationship I would stop answering knowing it would he grief. I'm not saying OP ever did that and he doesn't deserve to be ignored but let's be real. We have no idea their relationship. Just because he says he's never doesn't mean he actually hasn't and just because she apologizes and says she means it does mean she does. We really don't know. Tbf, she was probably already tipsy so everything probably sounded like a joke 😅. Without knowing their relationship from both parties’ side we can only ascertain half of the situation. His text could be interpreted as a funny case of blue balls because he misses her and the emergency that needed immediate medical attention was her coming home to relieve his pain in another way, if she was already a few drinks in. Or maybe he doesn’t realize he’s cried wolf before and she’s learned to ignore his over exaggerations. But I’m pretty sure she just thought he meant it as a joke which had went on for far too long. If one miscommunication brought on by him and her night out had him contemplating breaking up then he sounds massively immature to not tell her about it rubbing him the wrong way and not acknowledging both of their failures during that interaction. He could and should have requested an ambulance if he believed it to be that serious where he needed her to save him, then he should have told her he was on his way to hospital (time is never your friend during an actual emergency!) 😅 But if the OP is being entirely truthful then she did exhibit several red flags (rude behaviors) that night that could warrant an exit (like the blocking your number thing).
