What a pleasure it is to see a young person loving this story wholeheartedly. Nothing else compares. Please do read and do videos on the Appendices, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Children of Hurin, and the Tale of Beren and Luthien. They're in a bit of a different style, but they fill out Middle Earth history so much more, and also help understand some things in LotR better.
Hi, Miranda I absolutely love your enthusiasm, I first read Lotr when I bought a copy in 1978 and I have read it every year since. Fantastic story and I always find something new on each reading.
Never really liked the movies as too many changes were made unnecessarily. So glad to see that people are still reading this classic story. You can really tell that Tolkien experienced the horrors of war and the bittersweet joy of peace firsthand.
5 years later. "So guys I am finally done with Silmarillion. I know it took me a while; slightly got stuck on Baleriand and its Relms. Also new news, I do NOT want to be Elf any more or have any elven babies....."
If you want somewhere else to go, both the Appendices and the last few sections of The Unfinished Tales are good places to go. The Silmarillion is good, depending on how well you read that sort of thing (I mean, it feels like reading an archaic translation of the Bible, but if you find yourself up to it). (I definitely could have more suggestions, but that depends what your favorite parts of the story were) And yes, I might add Gimli got his own heroic moment and saved Pippin's life. Oh, and minor point: Merry didn't "kill" the Witch-king per se. The quote is: "Merry's sword had stabbed him from behind, shearing through the black mantle, and passing up beneath the hauberk had pierced the sinew behind his mighty knee." Seeing that a stab in the knee can't kill someone instantly, he was probably crippled in some way, but it was only afterward that Éowyn dealt the death-blow.
I just bought that centenary edition with 50 Alan Lee illustrations for £15 of ebay. I have heard the fellowship is a slog to get through, but if I don't make it it looks good on the coffee table.
I definitely think you'll love Pippin's song in Return of the King movie (all I can say is that it's a sad but beautiful song) it's my favorite trilogy for movies of all time and the books are just so good
@@mirandas_universe he also sings at the end of The Hobbit battle of The five armies movie the song and the song in the film is called The Last Goodbye. The actor is such a good singer as well
I Loved your perspective on the series I have loved since I read it in the mid 80's. JRR Tolkien said the Hobbit's returning to the Shire is the most important part of the whole story. Their growth in fighting the battle to destroy the ring was what made them leaders which they used their strength to lead the whole Shire to rise up against the Evil which had taken over the Shire. Why Peter Jackson left this out of the movie, I will never understand. If he had put it in, it would have made one of my favorite movie series even better.
I always have to laugh when I hear someone express his/her fear that some of the protagonists of LOTR could die, because clearly Martin has traumatized us all, and I always feel the urge to reassure the new readers that Tolkien is no Martin, and he has a too tender heart to kill his protagonists. Though he doesn't spare them any suffering, too...
shocks me that as big as a reader u r, u haven’t covered the LOTR series until now…i hope u enjoyed the last book the return of the king MOVIE goes crazy. that’s all i’m gonna say

I love that you're reading the books first. Peter Jackson did an amazing job of translating them to the screen, but the books are still the best.
How do you not have a million subscribers---you are possibly the most down to earth, passionate book tuber I watch!

Making annotations with red ink, nice! Did the same, it matches with the red of the book amazingly
I loved how you discussed an alternate ending without Gollum, I never thought about that before, super interesting to think about🤔👍
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤗
