  • My first video with my new camcorder. In Newport News this evening, Regional #95 (CSXT P095-20) is turned on the wye for tomorrows's trip north. The entire process lasts twice as long as the video actually is beacuse, once off the main, the switches are all thrown by hand. Sorry, you dont get to see the train come back out because there were cars in the yard blocking the view of the other leg of the wye. Feel free to use your imagination! It was all about GE this evening, Starring:
    -AMTK P42DC #19.
    Also Featuring:
    -CSXT C40-8 #7603
    -CSXT ES44AH #807
    -CSXT CW44AC #384
-CSXT Shoving platform(SPLAT)for RCO operation #9496
    (3/20/08)

Wow! Thanks for bringing back memories. I remember watching them do these yard moves back in 1989 while we waited for our father to pick us up from this station. Back then it was "The Colonial #94/95. I was not even 8 at the time but I loved the trip back to NYC Penn Station during the holidays to see our family. My last Amtrak trip was in summer '96 on the "Silver Star" to Tampa from NYC. Loved every minute of it.

Nice video. I've always wondered how they turned trains at NPN.

The wye you are referring to is a little further down by the engine terminal. I think I've heard that Amtrak now uses it instead of the wye in the video which is directly across from the passenger station and comes off of the west end yard lead

CSX would do something like that, wouldn't they? Actually I do remember reading somewhere about those units getting the high tractive effort software, thus the "H" Haha, Thanks Roger!

Usually as soon as all passengers have detrained, they will begin preparations for backing up. I havent tried this shot anywhere else than the west end of the Newport News platform but, looking at a google map, at looks like the dead-end of North Ave. on the Jefferson Ave side would be your best bet. Although the train has to back up all the way to Bellwood/Rivermont Dr. in order to clear the yard lead.

Is this the same wye they used when the train used to go to Phoebus and Hampton Roads?

This maneuver is no longer possible. When WalMart was builtk they took up too much track, and a 8-car train cant make this maneuver anymore. The trains are not turned downtown Newport News at the wye at 39th Street.
