58:42 - Another World is easily in my top ten games of all time. It really changed my outlook on what could be done with video games as a medium when I was younger. It's certainly not the most "replayable" game ever, but I do like to play through it at least once every year or two. You can finish it in maybe half an hour once you know what you're doing, but it's still such a cool game, and it's really fun to watch someone who's new to it figure out how to progress.

Man I felt EXACTLY the same way about Jedi Fallen Order, Try. Was like someone yanked a game out of the PS2/Cube era and brought it to modern platforms. Just a fun action adventure with some solid platforming and simple but good enough combat. Not my favorite game ever or anything but it felt nostalgic in a way, both good and bad.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  2 года назад +4

[Try4ce] Yep that was just my image of the game my whole time playing it. It coulda been a disappointment, and yet it just felt comfy and nostalgic for being so earnest and simple with what it tried to be.

Interesting. I found that game to be the worst parts of the souls-like phenomenon. Painfully slow traversal of boring empty levels with occasional combat that was super frustrating and likewise SLOOOOOW.
It's like every few hours you would see something awesome and think YEAH THIS IS GONNA BE GREAT!!! and then it's back to slow traversal and boring repetitive combat. I wanted to fight some freakin' dark jedi and ride some speederbikes not take the long way round countless rooms in swamps and frozen empty caves.

Because RUclips's algorithms tend to cater to clickbait and low tier drama. This channel releases long very informative videos and it doesn't release them every day. So RUclips can't monetize them effectively like other low effort channels. It's a shame though as I prefer this to nearly everything out there. Ok, I'll take another crack at Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection, get out the arcade stick, finished Parasite Eve four times when it came out, love that game. Yes, I had great success cleaning goo from sticky labels, etc, off second hand controllers with Colloidal Silver, used it on an old copy of Sacred 2 360 I picked up recently and it nearly got the ancient label gunk off with a q tip, took all the sticky out anyway, it's great because it evaporates with no trace, also very effective against mouth ulcers. Thanks. Happy New Year. (If anyone's reading this, I mentioned this in the chat some time ago :)

44:08 If you haven't already, I'd recommend you to play Hollow Knight. It completely reinvigorated my love for the Metroidvania genre, not just because of the quality of the typical Metroidvania elements themselves (complex map layout, exploration and backtracking, rpg lite progression, level design, combat, platforming etc.), but because of the incredible aesthetics and world building that really sucked me in. In the last 10 years only Bloodborne had a comparable impact. I think it's because of how compelling and coherent the vision is, and how consistently well it's executed across all aspects of the game's design. It's unbelievable how such a small team was able to craft such a masterpiece of an indie game.

My favorite games I played this year were Sekiro, which was my first FromSoft game and DOA6. Sekiro is on my favorite games list now, it's just really satisfying to play I love the combat and the setting, I've finished it like 5 times now. As for DOA6 I've been trying to get into fighting games for years now, I've tried Street Fighter, SoulCaliber, Tekken and a few others but none of them clicked, but DOA's triangle system just worked for me. Ive been playing online and having a ton of fun, and then learning about frame times, mix ups, safe vs unsafe attacks, I finally feel like I'm starting to understand fighting games on a deeper level. I gotta say though fighting games have some of the greediest business models ever, it's sad to see. Anyway happy new years!

It was hard to mentally take myself out of that world initially, and then the experience has never left me. Great and informative video. I bought and tried out the Tanuki game; yes, it's fun and the control is very tight, but I can tell it was created by just one guy. I'd say it's a far cry from the depth (and equally excellent control) you get in Circle of the Moon, Might Gunvolt Burst or similar titles. It feels like a too-easy version of Legend of Hero Tonma. Re: Metroid, I think most metroidvanias aren't worth my time, so Metroid was my GOTY. Nintendo tends to nail its big-name titles, and for Metroid I trusted (and believe they succeeded) at hitting the balance among all relevant factors -- good control, some added novelty, growth from exploration with increasing difficulty, interesting puzzles, memorable environments, etc, and most importantly, the time investment required to get something out of the game. I like that I don't need to devote tens of hours to get some enjoyment. Many developers assume everyone is an unattached 17-year old minor with no job.

[Try4ce] Gosh, what were they called? Came from eBay but I haven't had to order any extra in a long time. I believe they are intended for use with some kind of old PC card hardware or something.

Legacy of the wizard is one of my favourites NES games. I can't explain it really. I just love it :)

[Try4ce] Yeah I wish I'd had more time to elaborate here. It's a very charming game but boy I don't know how anyone could have ever figured it out on their own and the block pushing and bosses are maddening!

@@mylifeingaming Yeah definitely. My favorite part is for sure the structure of going down and down. It feels a lot like terraria. I think it might have inspired Hollow Knight too, the devs say they were inspired by a lot of NES games. It's a hard game to play but it was ambitious and forward thinking.
One of those games that you want to try again and again but every time you start it you realize why you dropped it last time 😅

My favorite games that I beat in 2021 would be Life Force, Zero Wing, Greylancer, Eco Fighters, Umihara Kawase, Umihara Kawase Shun - Second Edition, Cuphead, Alwa's Legacy and Maid-san wo Migi ni - Shooting Star.
Highly recommend Maid-san to anyone who likes tough precision-platforming. It's currently Japan only, but it might be getting a western release during 2022.
My most played game in 2021 was easily Virtua Fighter 5 - Ultimate Showdown.

Chex Quest ftw! I beat it 3x as a kid, I unfortunately didn't keep the disc for some reason, but ya, then came LRG to save the day with a collector's edition, haha!

Great video, I had an awesome 2021 finally finishing Super Metroid after hiring it back in the 90's and also finished the amazing streets of rage 2 and re played the amazing super Castlevania 4 and f zero on the SNES, my lowlight was trying to play Castlevania bloodlines on the megadrive after super, CV4 is a masterpiece bloodlines just feels like a regular platformer.

I totally get where they are coming from on Metroid Dread. Personally, I felt it was one of the best games I played this year. But I also called it Metroid's version "Link to the Past" where developers gave us exactly what we wanted on a silver platter. Only problem is, unlike Link to the Past, there was a gazillion other games just like it in the time frame from Super Metroid to Metroid Dread. While I loved Dread, I totally think thse criticisms are valid. Much better than David Jaffe's complaining.

[Try4ce] It's a "you'd have had to be there" moment. He had been stuck on that level for an hour. It's full of rotating platforms, and the time he finally beat it, he waited several seconds and then just held directly up and everything aligned just right to bounce him to the exit somehow. After all that time, it was that simple.
