Sorry to do it like this, but I've been using this addon recently, and really love it. However it's last version is unable to work if the GP is constrained. I've found a fix to that but cannot contact the developer. Can you do so for me? Let them know that using the gpencil object's `.matrix_world.to_translation()` will give a vector of the origin's position after the constraint. So we can fix this issue by using this for the `gporigin` value.
@@NikolaNevenov86 thanks for your response i will let Ed know.
@@SpitfireStoryboards Hey thanks, another thing is that I'm not quite sure what your concept was, but for the `center option` I think we can use the Gpencil's Bounding box. Blender calculates the bbox for the gpencil every frame, thus finding the center of all the strokes is simply finding the center of the bbox which is basically just 8 verts. So we don't need to loop through all of the strokes and all of the points on a stroke.
I suppose in the case where you only one a specific layer to be summed up.... it makes sense . In any case I'm looking into auto aligning the cursor to the camera view every time it snaps. But have nothing at the moment, and I do need to finish my animatic soon.
Anyway Merry Christmas(or Happy Holidays).
We are a small production company based in Nepal and we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for content like these that make our lives a lot easier. Ofcourse, it wouldnt be possible if not for the Blender gods who have blessed us with this amazing software. I struggle explaining my vision to crew and cast using shot list or even 2d storyboards. Now I just make a 3d model of every set and do a Grease pencil sketch like youve done. thank you again. We love you.
Thanks you very much for this comment . This has made my day. I'm very glad to hear that this content is helping in that way. I've subbed to your channel and hope to see some behind the scenes videos in the future where you show your storyboards perhaps ? Go for it !!

Thank you for such an amazing detailed presentation. I can't wait to try this addon.
*Update* Shift+ The Stylus left button DO work to switch the cursor's position.
Thanks for watching. Hope it works well for you.
Great commercial for this addon and to showcase your methods. But, it takes an animator with a directors eye to execute such
animatics. Never-the-less, it is exciting to watch you flesh out the process and display how the animatic can be accomplished more efficiently by making the entire stroke layer as a single animated scene. Hopefully there will be an easy solution for the camera tracking position logging to the timeline. With Blenders extensive and evolving features set, it will be challenging to keep up with all the changes an enhancements. It's always fun to celebrate your discoveries and joy. 😁
What a fantastic comment . Yes what I am doing in terms of boarding and camera is what I have learned through 15 years of experience. I focus on the method and approach rather than trying to explain all that as it would take hours upon hours upon......etc . For the tracking most people use empties to track to anyway as it gives better control .but we will look into it
You guys are spearheading a revolution right here! This hybrid workflow already was a game changer, opening previously nearly unthinkable storytelling options even to people who are fairly new to any of the involved disciplines (3D/Blender, animation, storyboarding)... This is something people could only dream of not that long ago.. And here we are with yet another leap forward... Many, MANY thanks for that!
Hybrid is the future . Lets push it together . Go!
Woowwww very THANKSSSSSSS!
Take it for a spin Sergio!! Your work is ace
Fantastic add on!! One thing I don’t understand is your use of “hide” visibility key frames… love this add on, you sir are brilliant!..
Thanks. I can't recall whether I have covered the hide keys in a video. But here is how u do it : in your grease pencil layers ,each layer has an eye icon to hide or not. Hover cursor over it and press I . That will keyframe the state . Now go to frame where u want it hidden and switch eye off and press I again. U should see the keys in the object keyframe on playback timeline.
Gogogo!

Amazing- is there anything like Blender, and the Blender community? Seriously, I think its becoming the best thing out there. I've never really used Toon Boom Harmony- can its 3d/2D workflow even approach this?
I know right ? Blender community is great. I use storyboard Pro alot and love it, and while u can kind if do 2d 3d in there its not great imo and u can't make 3d in there. I never use the 3d side of sbpro. So no , there is nothing else quite like blender for 2d 3d hybrid. The genius was making the grease pencil an object . That opened it right up to truly exist in 3d.
this addon is stuck in my mind
Let me know if you try it
This is an amazing add-on (and workflow video :) which single-handedly made mixing 2D and 3D make sense to me in Blender.
As a hopefully small feature request: would it be possible to not just move the 3D cursor with this addon but also rotate it?
When I place a 3D cursor in the scene I notice that it inherits the view angle, so I can rotate the drawing plane around while sketching an action without having to set-up cameras first. But when Cursor Snap places the cursor back onto a frame it doesn't change the rotation from whatever it was before, so the 3D cursor drawing plane option no longer matches. Perhaps a few of random vertices can also be subtracted to get the normal after it's done averaging the location?
Hi. Really glad you like it. Thanks for the request. Yes indeed, in the pro version one of the features will be to make more of the 3d cursors rotation, and we will see what we can regarding keying those rotation for when we snap back . We have lots of cool features Ideas so look forward to the pro version in the future sometime (but it wont be for a while as Ed and I have been very busy)
This is the best grease pencil anything i have ever seen in blender, all thanks go to everyone in spitfire storyboard. One question;
is there a setting to make it so that it always faces the camera?
Thank you. Depends on what u mean by face the camera. Do u mean when u are drawing? If so, then yes, you just to need to in draw mode have the ‘view ‘ setting on. If u mean, get it to face the camera even if u then change the camera angle, then that requires more work, using the reproject option.
Thanks. Depends on what u mean by face camera. If u mean when u are drawing, then yes, select the view setting at top. It’s highlighted in video. If u mean, to always and ever face any camera after u have drawn it, then no. But u can reproject strokes so that if u changed angle and wanted to reproject, u could
@@SpitfireStoryboards allways face camera (and maybe viewport tho thats secondary to what i want). This would make complex scenes more flexible in that changing angles completely with an already drawn out sequence doesn’t force you to rotate everything or specific frames to the camera or jus redoing the frames themselves
@@SpitfireStoryboards thanks for the reply it means a lot
@@stanley8006 yeh I’m not sure how to do that. Basically some kind of ‘always face camera / viewport’ option. It feels like there should be a setting somewhere in an objects settings
❤
Did you have to use empties to track those camera movements in the end? Or manually keyframe the camera orientation?
im hyped to use this, but how does it compare to using 3d models as a base and parenting them, which work flow do you prefer?
Both have their uses. I have stopped parenting to objects, for the reasons I address late in my Sci fi tutorial set : it creates codependencies and u have to always use the 3d model keys to animate your gp. If I use 3d characters now I tend to use them as a block out for reference but not parent. Cursor snapper is the complete opposite of parenting and object keying . It's a liberating way to work for some people . All of these approaches have their uses. Thanks for engaging . Let me know if u like this method .
Question for you about your process using this technique with finished animation. If you're doing a walk or run from the front or back, how do you address foot placement/sliding. Because if on every frame in a frontal walk, let's say, the grid steps forward, there's a problem. I guess one way to handle is by just using "view" mode and drawing on one plane for finished animation, essentially "copying" from the roughs. But, was wondering your process.
Yeh stuff going directly away ot towards camera cN be tricky . I strongly suggest prepping it by using the dot path method to get yr positions first, or use 2 views so u can see where from the side too. Both methods shown in the video.
Great idea! We're testing the addon at the minute, works great. A couple of suggestions/requests:
1) would be useful if it also rotated the 3D cursor to the correct angle - the current approach requires the camera to be locked and to always draw from the camera, which is a little limiting in some situations. It's not quite as simple as moving to the correct location, but certainly should be doable for planar drawings, if not deformed ones?
2) would be simpler to use if it worked with blender's existing ways of moving through time (scrubbing the timeline, using left/right, using up/down) rather than having its own standalone next/previous keyframe buttons. Is there any reason it can't run automatically whenever the frame changes?
Other than that it's a really fun tool, definitely streamlines the GP workflow. Thanks!
Hi thanks for the detailed feedback. In response: point 1 , angle of cursor is already on the list for a feature. 2, I prefer that people have the option to not snap if they don't want to. The shift plus up down shortcut is simple enough . But , well look into it as an option perhaps, if its possible to make it auto. In v1 it just made is simpler to have an input . Thanks
@@SpitfireStoryboards Awesome, will keep an eye out for updates! Good luck :-)
@@hellorgl5 cheers . PRO version might b a while so make the most of v1 for now . Feel free to send links to any work u do
@@SpitfireStoryboards Sure thing! Thanks!
!) Yes, rotating the cursor will be a future feature with this add-on. 2) Blender does not want scripts running in the background for very good reasons. It is possibly to run some functions in a modal way. It would be best if this were done in the core code of Blender.
Great content mate, i have a question. Where do you get those white and grey 3d objects on the 3d background?
By white and grey objects to do umean the rocks ? These are just downloaded from online. I believe these might be from the megascans library. The monkeys are from blender . The turret is from polyfjourd . I made the rest
@@SpitfireStoryboards Oh okay, thank you very much for the answer, I also use the megascans. Also my other question was, the white material of the environment, how do you do it? With the grease pencil?
@@Israel2099 I don’t know what you mean by white material sorry. The objects have basic materials on them, maybe they looks white to you because Of the light on them?
@@SpitfireStoryboards Woooooooooooooooow I did not expect that answer. I thought you had put a material or something on them so that they would look like that drawing. haha Thank you very much

@@edwhite3d728 If there was a way to get the up and down arrows to recognize GP key frames that would help workflow a lot. Maybe that's an internal blender issue.
@@SpitfireStoryboards I gave you another 50. This is massively useful, very much worth it. I went from occasionally blocking stuff out in Blender for refining in Storyboard Pro later to boarding entire sections in Blender. I'm also pushing my board team to get it as well. @@ChrisNeuhahnArt wow. Awesome mate. Thanks so much. I'd love to see what u get cooking with it !! Viva la blender

I like your UI set up. How do you keep the timeline set up (for grease pencil and the normal timeline) in sync with one another? Like, how you do zoom in/out or move throughout the timeline on one and the other follows? Or did you just line them up for recording purposes?
Also, did you plan out your shots (drawn thumbnails) before making this storyboard/animatic?
Thanks!
Hi Shika. I've been meaning to cover the timeliness thing in a quick video. Basically what u do is get your two timelines to the same scale initially so frames match up. Then in ' view' on timeline select ' synch visible range ' . Do that for both . Cheers
On the thumbnails......I did some very lose ones somewhere before hand but just for some initial ideas. It changed and grew in the making for sure
@@SpitfireStoryboards Ah gotcha! thank you! I do have a couple more questions if you don't mind...
Will you release a full storyboard/animatic here on youtube that has been completely done in blender (not just tests, but from an actual scene from a script or something)?
do you ever use different 'Scenes' in Blender?
As far as storyboarding in Blender goes, do you ever do any 2d shots (for the simple shots/character movements) and just save these 3d ones for complex shots/movements? If so, how do you keep everything organized? Different blender files or keep everything in one file?
@@Shka_maru yes I will upload content like that when I do some that I can show . I have not used scenes much or the vse editor but will be exploring it. I would do stuff in 2d if the project was right but to me the hybrid is the reason I use blender so ....I d probably do that instead. So far every scene I have done in blender has been one file . This cursor snapper scene is one file, one character, 36 cameras using the marker on timelines to switch . Feel free to come over to the discord for more chat and community fun ;)
Super impressive! I'm using the plugin, and it's really helpful. Question: You talk about starting off in "front" mode to do your roughs, and then switch to "view" when you get closer to tie-downs. Can you comment on this process? Haven't tried it yet, but it seems like it could be awkward and difficult reproducing drawings in "view" mode when the originals were done in "front", especially if the angle of the camera changes significantly. Also, I notice that when you draw in "front", for example, and then switch to "view", only subsequent drawings will abide by the new setting. Is there a way to make all drawings comply when moving from "front" to "view", or vice versa?
These are good questions . What you've mentioned here is precisely why I treat that first pass as layout and I don't get too specific about nailing the artwork from a perspective . I keep it very loose. Once camera angle is established then yes for that initial change to view mode there is often a difference between the angle but there isn't much way around that. In terms of the angle of the artwork then facing camera then as long as you are in view mode, your new drawing will always face camera. However if u are talking about wanting to reproject the artwork to a new angle , u can also do that but it has to be frame by frame for view mode . I'm not sure if I have yet covered this in any of my vids but u go into edit mode, select the artwork then go up to grease pencil , clean up, reproject strokes , view . I've been meaning to put it in a quick tips video . I don't use it much its more for fixing mistakes
@@SpitfireStoryboards As always, thanks for your quick and full reply. Deeply appreciated. What I love about your plugin is that it makes establishing timing a lot simpler. I didn't know about that Edit mode trick, so thank you for that as well. Please keep up the great work, and know that what you're doing is making a real impact in the growing GP community.
@@hotchd1 thanks very much. Yeh, not needing objects keys radically simplifies the process of timing etc. There is no conflict or co dependency using this method

Thank you - this tool is super helpful!
Any insight as to why object mode causes such problems? Is there a workaround for this (or one planned?)
Thanks again and may God bless you!
Hi and thanks for feedback. Do u mean object mode in relation to cursor mode?
The solution will be to do with moving the origin. We will explore it but for now best to just decide which method u want to use for any given situation.
@@SpitfireStoryboards In the video you spoke about not using object mode to change the position of a drawing, as it messes the whole thing up. Isn't that normal with grease pencil?
@@Miguel-ez6sh it depends what method u are using. In my other videos I use the characters like objects, moving them around in space . I refer to this as the object mode . It moves the whole gp object . The reason I say it doesn't work well in conjunction with this cursor method is that using cursor we have planned out a specific path of strokes in 3d, as opposed to moving the onmbject itself through space . Thats the distinction, I'd say .
@@SpitfireStoryboards Thank you! I'm guessing you prefer this method, or do they each have their own applications?
@@Miguel-ez6sh i definitely prefer this method for workflow and action where the character traverse the environment. For other things i find the other other methods have plenty of utility still. They are all tools for us to use
