What a great story, Tony! You have a way of telling a story that makes it fascinating & unforgettable no matter what the story is about. You always seem to have the human interest angle that makes the history of the buildings come alive.

Paisley Close is right next door to my pharmacy and I haven’t noticed the inscription and stonework above it. 🥴 I’ll pay more attention in the future.
I’m sharing this video on my Facebook account to see if we can get you closer to your goal of 10K. 😁

Thank you Tony! I have walked by that close probably 10 times in the past. I will be in Edinburgh this coming Sept. and you can best believe that I will be keeping an eye out for Paisley Close and that I will be telling my travel companions about the story behind it. All because of you. Thank you for bringing Edinburgh alive for those of us that have no idea of the amazing history behind some of the places in that amazing city.

Would love a history lesson on White Horse Close. There seems to have been many different uses for it over the years... We stayed in one of the homes there for 2 weeks in Sept 2019; every time you walk near it and miss it, I cry, haha. Would love to see it again. Hi from Vancouver BC Canada!

We loved this historical story Tony. You have such a great way in sharing the history of beautiful Edinburgh.
It's sort-of sad that wee Joseph McIvor's history is not known. I dug around a bit to see if I could find out what happened to him. Unfortunately, after Joseph's miraculous escape, there is no account whether he ever benefitted from the improvements made to his hometown, Edinburgh. However, since he and most of the other surviving children were orphaned by the tragedy, he was probably delivered along with them the following morning to the city workhouse.😪

I am 87years old and was born in Blackfriars Street, just opposite Paisley Close. Someone inquired about the history of White Horse Close. After the war, people were living in empty shops and anywhere available. My friend ‘s family lived in a couple of rooms in White Horse Inn, in the close. We used to sit on the steps and play. It didn’t look then, like it does now. It was run down and in desperate need of repair. It hadn’t been used as an Inn for many years.

I watched your video video of your walk along the the Union Canal from Fountainbridge to Harrison Park. We are very lucky to live in ancient city full of history I love that. Also Edinburgh is an easy city to walk around. Last week I walked to Mortonhall Caravan past the caravan park round to a path called staneydykehead it was a really nice walk I really enjoyed it I would recommend you going for a walk there and seeing the two Highland Cattle that live there year round.

I had not heard that story and enjoyed it very much! I am actually curious about what he did with the rest of his life. Did he stay in Edinburgh as a bit of a local legend? Did he get into trouble later having nowhere to go after the building collapsed, when his ma and pop and 3 of his older brothers and his dear sweet little sister perished in the collapse? Did he kind of fade back into the annals of history after his couple of weeks of fame? Was he adopted by the baker or the mayor and do well for himself? Was he forever lame from the injuries he suffered in the collapse? Did he take one of the boats to America or South Africa or........? Curious. I can see why this is one of your favorite stories! It is one of mine, now, too! Thanks!!
You're on IMDB now? That's awesome! You say that you are not a historian, and I understand why that is important to you. It could be said that you are an amateur historian or an armchair historian but if this channel is monetized, then you are a professional historian. But you aren't a doctor of archeology and you don't want people thinking that you are trying to get above yourself. An armchair historian is usually one who enjoys the subject, talks, reads and watches everything he finds on the topic and it rarely implies expertise or education. People don't usually assign the title to someone they don't know well because they might be offended if they do have an education in history, could even be a professor but they don't advertise it and no one wants to offend. And, GOOD GRIEF what a lot of hot air! Sorry. If you are comfortable with the title, an armchair historian might be an accurate description and.... I am still talking!!
If you find any more information about Joseph McIver(y), I would love to know more about him. Thanks!!

Limiting factors of the original skyscrapers included the sheer weight/strength of the materials used (wood, stone, maybe wrought iron) and the impractical nature of a very tall building before the invention of the elevator/lift. It was just uneconomic to build taller and, as ever, money talks.

@@ClanBroonford aye, I seem to remember it was a gap site when, as high schoolers back in the early eighties, we used to loiter in The Other Record Shop which was where the Museum of childhood is now. A relatively modern replica of the surroundings. I had relatives living in a studio flat up a stair in Paisley Close in the 70s. The fabric of the stair was in an awfy state, crumbling, even compared to our stair on Easter Road which itself dated from around 1880-ish.
