and while your in the Grassmarket, the pub/resturant across from the gallows the name of the place is "The Last Drop"....my cousin and her husband where managers for a few years, when I would visit there they would give me a nice steak pie dinner in there loved it.
You've done it again! I was in Edinburgh last week, for two days, with 20 teenagers! We did a whirlwind tour of the city and the kids were amazed at what I knew about everything. I was able to use the closes to navigate and could tell them strange little stories about what they were seeing - all thanks to you and your videos. They did the Edinburgh Dungeons, found the world-famous parrot basket and they were even looking for Davy, the piper, with me! Twenty teens from El Paso, TX LOVE Edinburgh! You are awesome! Thank you for the awesome videos and all the wonderful info!!
Hello! And thank you for information. As a child I lived in the Grassmarket. From the window I could watch musicians with their instruments and military uniforms rushing down the Castle Wynd to alight their buses back to barracks. Down at the West Port end of Grassmarket on the left hand was a large rock referring to many as a meteorite. Just across the road, near the pub, was the house that Burke & Hare lived in. As a 8 year old my Granny said to me, this may mean nothing to you at present, but when older you will learn the story them. At that time they gutting the place out. Now I am 70 year old who has been living in Northern Ireland these past 50 years. I also remember also the horse and carts which delivered beer. Milk and butter pats in grease paper and little bottles of orange juice. Anyway, like you I am a very proud Edinburgh Man….
Rewatching your videos in anticipation of my second trip to Scotland in 6 months. I’m studying to be a history teacher and old doors and signs make me giddy with excitement as well! Haha! Love your excitement about everything!
You've got a wonderful style of storytelling Tony. Our TV tour shows over here in the US seems kind of corporate by comparison. I also can't remember seeing any vlogs of American cities that go into the little details like you do. Makes it personal and very enjoyable.
We stayed here in Grassmarket! I would highly recommend it. It was incredibly close to all of the sights and some great pubs - only making it a few steps home after a few whiskies! Plus, the view of Edinburgh Castle is second to none - loved it! Great vid, as always!!
We have watched several videos now. We will be in Edinburgh April 25th for several days, and getting a car for exploring the highlands a few more days. Thank you for helping us in some of our decisions through your work on the videos. We do plan to go to the White Hart Inn, as we are staying about 10 minute walk from there. Would love to buy you and your wife a pint / bite as we explore your city!
Love your work Tony. I have lived in Edinburgh for almost two years now and have spent many many hours exploring on foot and by car and now understand there is still much to see and learn. What a fantastic city!
I’m a few days late to the history lesson, professor Broonford! Loved that tidbits about the Bronze Age and the gallow stones. I found Grassmarket to be a very peaceful spot, probably due to the wide spacing & less crowded. Heading to 2,500 subscribers! 👏🏻🏴
Always enjoy your videos. Helped prepare me for my visit in November and had an amazing time can’t wait to return this year. The grass market was great loved the pubs and the general atmosphere. Keep giving us those awesome videos!
The walking around and showing the viewer how the places are so close together and how to get to those places will be very helpful in planning our day's events. It would be even more helpful to learn the hours that a place is open and what the cost may be. Thanks again! It sure would be fun to meet you while we are there in July 2019.
I can't wait to get back there one day and explore around some more and show my family all these easter eggs and act so cool like "ya, I know, I'm just observant like that ya know!" LOL!!
Completely gobsmacked yet again that you can walk from Grass Market to Greyfriars Bobby. On my next visit you are seriously saving my legs all the long routes i took! Thanks
Great video as always guys. Love hearing these great stories about Edinburgh. Looking forward to seeing all these places again the next time we visit 👍
Keep up the good work! I'm coming in September for almost a whole month and staying in the city (my second visit to Scotland, first focused on Edinburgh). I love your positive attitude. You guys are good people!
Little is known about John Gray, he was a police night watchman. Bobby was his best friend, always with his master. Nobody knows where he died, only the cause of death, which was tuberculosis, he was about 47 years old. Amazing the loyalty of Bobby, never left the grave of his master, till his own death. Portuguese use to say " if you need a friend, get a dog", that s true. Love the video! Recalling places where i was.🐶🐕🐶
There is a memorial stone out front the White Hart set in the pavement marking the exact spot where the bomb impacted 2 April 1916 (probably under one of the garbage bins during your filming). I was so surprised as an amateur historian that the Germans had made it so far North in their bombings in WW1, that I took a photo of the stone, which I cannot seem to share with you. I wish I had known some of these other details before I had visited last year.... but now I will just have to visit again to appreciate the historic details in person. I love your sharing your beautiful city, which makes me appreciate it even more. It is obvious you have much love and pride in your City and Country.
I remember my Mum telling me, when she was a young lass in Edinburgh she saw a Zeppelin drop something black from it , then a big boom later it could have been down at Leith , but i am not sure .
I lived in Edinburgh when I was about 3 years old. I lived really close to Greyfriars Bobby statue. I knew the story and I used to get my mum to take me out every day to give him a kiss because I didn't want him to feel on his own anymore. Kids are so cute lol
I love your video's so much! Could you maybe do a video about the oldest buildings in town and their stories? I love history so I would love a video like that. Thank you for being your awesome self😁
Very happy to have found your channel, you’ve both been very helpful and entertaining! If you’re looking for a subject for a rainy day, maybe a quick talk about money? Is the Great British pound or Scottish pound accepted only? Euros accepted at all? How about tipping? (Taxis, restaurants vs. pub tipping? Etc...). Thanks for taking all these enjoyable walks, we can’t wait to visit Edinburgh! 😊
If you go to the Appex grassmarket, they have a peice of cement and a Packard of that zeplin bomb you are talking about, it's in the back in the patio ( smoking area)
If possible could you make a video or a list of things that are wheelchair accessible. I love your videos so much. They are the best ones on youtube by far!!!
Another great video Tony. Was walking through there last September, coming from the Bruntsfield Links, every day. Will be back in June. Your videos are like a Care Package. Greatly appreciated and fun. PS.....That walk up to "Bobby"....There is that Kirk with a few "Potter Characters" chiseled in stone in there. A Grass Market "Redux"?
Love all your videos! I'll be staying a week in your town in May, first time coming to Scotland. I'm from the states, have owned 3 kilts for years, play the pipes too. Question - I notice I rarely see anyone in Edinburgh wearing kilts, why is that?
It does not tend to be every day wear. Some people do just wear a kilt, and 99% of Scots like to wear the kilt. However it is mostly worn at special occasions. Weddings, Christmas, new year. But give a Scot a reason, and we will wear it.
The Pizzeria, you seemed to have trouble pronouncing it. It's pizza-reea "reea" like the name Rita without the T. Love your videos, keep up the wonderful work.
Hello Broonfords! Hi from Arizona USA. We love your videos in our house! We will be in Edinburgh this summer with our pipe band for some competitions, including the Edinburgh Pipe Band Championship on June 23. If you're looking for a video idea, maybe you'd like to check it out? Look forward to your next video...
Hi just found your film of the grassmarket from 3 years ago, I know at one time there was a paving slab near the white heart Inn regarding the zeppelin bomb that exploded there, but it seems to have been removed can you please investigate for me please. Thanks from a greatfull subscribers.
I'm not sharing any of this stuff with the wife... She's gonna think I'm a genius when we visit in Sept😂thanks to you bro!! I owe you a couple o pints and a haggis dinner at the least👍
Next time I’m back home in Scotland, I’ll be telling people all these facts. My sister will give me side eye but she will just be jealous of my massive brain!
Hello from Canada! Loving your vids; "studying" them for our family trip in mid-Sept. Questions for our vegan daughter; difficult to find vegan (non dairy) options in restaurants? How's the wifi? Is it in certain types of places/restaurants or perhaps general wifi outside in squares like some places? Have you done a vid/trip to Alnwick? (Daughter and I did several years ago.) I am looking at Rabbie's Tours and they are reasonably priced - they have affiliate marketing, so YOU could check that out for yourself, maybe go on day tours and report back... JUST a thought. :) (I might do that when we come over, as we are doing at least 3 Rabbie's Tours.)
I was born in this area in 1952 "Bread st" and it saddens me to see how much the grass market has changed for tourism , the grass market was originally grassed totally up the centre of the street where there are now cobbles , this could be where the name grass market came from ,The gallows stone is not original it was placed on top of an old victorian public toilet , there were no pizza restaurants these were added for tourists , although there was a lot of pubs some with different names , You failed to mention the west port or king stables road both streets that have loads of history about Burke and Hare who committed murder and , where the royal stables were, no mention of grannies green or the married quarters where poor families were housed. I have enjoyed your videos but please get all the facts correct correct
Hi, thank you for your comments. I am Not a historian, just someone who enjoys to share the little I know about it with those thinking of visiting. I am always looking for more stories to learn to share with others. I remember the public toilets you mentioned. I am gathering facts about burke and hare, and I don’t know much about kings stable road. If you have interesting history stories I am happy to learn.
and while your in the Grassmarket, the pub/resturant across from the gallows the name of the place is "The Last Drop"....my cousin and her husband where managers for a few years, when I would visit there they would give me a nice steak pie dinner in there loved it.

Thanks Tony. We are planning our return trip for July and this video just gave us a place to check. Thank you for your time it is appreciated.
no problem at all.

I’m an American. I was in Edinburgh for the first time in May. I stayed at the Apex Grassmarket. I wish I’d seen your videos before I visited.

Slowly getting there. By no means a big youtube, but every single person that subscribes makes me smile. It means so much.
I’m visiting Scotland for my first ever time in June, and going to Edinburgh, so I’ve been loving all these videos of yours! Cheers :)
No problem at all. Glad they are helping you. 👍
Just discover your channel. I’m headed to Scotland next year and your videos are very informative
Thanks, I hope they help you plan.
New viewer. enjoying the videos, very informative! i’ll be going back this year! keep up the good content.

Might be a big list, but if i am talking about a particular thing then yes i will.
what great memories! just loved revisiting Grass market... was there just less than 2 months ago. thanks for posting
Glad it brought back good memories.
I can't wait to get back there one day and explore around some more and show my family all these easter eggs and act so cool like "ya, I know, I'm just observant like that ya know!" LOL!!
I stayed in the Grassmarket when I visited. Seeing this makes me want to go back. So much more to see and do there! Great video!
Thank you, hope it brought back some good memories.
Completely gobsmacked yet again that you can walk from Grass Market to Greyfriars Bobby. On my next visit you are seriously saving my legs all the long routes i took! Thanks
Thats what i am here for.
@@ClanBroonford if you tell me a shortcut from the castle to the hardrock cafe I'd be very grateful 😁
Great episode! Thanks, can hardly wait to see it!
Thank you, Tony! Great video. 😊❤️
Thanks.
Great Job! Been watching for a while - you helped us prepare for our Christmas trip and now getting us ready for our Spring trip. Thanks.
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoy the vids. Hope they help you plan a great visit.

Cracking walk-about of the Grass Market, Lad. I learnt something new, ...in spite of my having a muddled mind. Slainte
I thought there was a thing on the floor near the zebra crossing for the zepplin bombs
Cool, never knew there was the gallow in the stones 🙂🙂
Love Edinburgh! Thanks for the video walk.
Actially there is a plaque there on the ground about the 1916 Zeppellin attack on the Grassmarket.
Found it after filming the video. Slightly different position than i thought it was.
My father said that he saw the Hindenburg fly over his school and the teachers let all the little kids out to look. Love the videos!!!!!
Thats amazing.

I wonder where they’ll put my plaque one day ..portobello prom ?
We are already planning our return to Edinburgh!

There is a plaque on the floor where the Zeppelin bomb landed. you must have been standing on it when you took the video 🤣
I spotted a plaque, last week, on the ground, re: the zeppelin bombs, prior to seeing this video.. maybe it’s been placed because of your video 🤷🏼♂️
I wish, it was there before me.
Those free tours of Edinburgh are they worth the money?
I’m afraid I have never done one of them. Sorry.
I stay in the market every year. The Apex is where we usually book. Any other suggestions that offer a better price/service? Will be back Aug 22.
Unfortunately, living in Edinburgh. I don't know much about the hotels and their prices or standards. Sorry.

Alnwick is in another country.
What happened to doing the Arthur seat videos
To windy and i need to do more research first. Don't worry, i will get to it.
