You're right hanging was a big occasion where people consumed large amounts of alcohol. The next day after the hanging was over they’d be suffering. That’s where the word “ Hangover “ comes from.

My wife, a nurse, trained at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary from 1974 to 1978, and remember the Grassmarket as being famous for its homeless hostels.

We always love your videos and, seeing as we're staying in the Grassmarket in the near future, we've been reviewing any you've done that focus on it. Thanks for the information and interesting bits of history.

In 2006 my wife proposed to me (yes, that way round and I said "yes"!) in Gennaro's Italian restaurant in the Grassmarket. Alas, that restaurant is no more but the area holds a special place in my heart ❤️

Just recently went on a vacation with my wife and kids to Edinburgh, we had stayed in an apartment within Fiddles Close, fascinating history all around you there, so much to take in. We had been informed that The Last Drop pub on the Grass Market was a place to take the people who were destined for the gallows for a shot of whiskey, this was a way for them to loosen up so the hanging would work properly. Will certainly be returning back to Edinburgh in the near future, even though the costs from Canada can be enormous 😆

In mid May this year they were filming the t.v. show Rebus in the Grassmarket. I know this because I was trying to find Greyfriars and walked through the set right up to Richard Rankin - oops! But being a fan, he was so kind to grant a photo. I had great luck!

Hi, Tony, love your videos. Being originally from Musselburgh, it's great to hear all your history of Edinburgh. But one thing that's been bugging me. Pictures are hung, people are hanged. The engraving on the pavement in the Grassmarket pavement got it right! Please don't hate me 🙏❤
