Yes- we pay one rate for the truck that never gets taken to work or past a certain amount of miles- it’s an old work truck- nobody needs full coverage for it. I was so glad to learn this savings a while back.

Very true. My hubby is in the automotive business and even with his knowledge and discounts it’s still very expensive. Years ago, the guys did a lot of trading, so I’d always get new tires for free. Not anymore.

I put about 3500 miles a year on my car. At 59 years old, it may very well outlast me. The key is changing the oil regularly, swapping your antifreeze every so often, and driving like an adult.

Good call. My car broke in Covid so I didn’t bother replacing it for 18 months. I just got used to walking 25 mins to my nearest shops. Eventually I had to get another car to be able to pick up my grandson from school about 6 miles from me but bought a small cheap runaround. Apart from the school run I hardly use it.

I got my license at 30 after I was terrified of driving and getting into an accident. It took a very toxic work environment to push me to get it and it felt very empowering. That said, I think I'm ready to give it up at 40 and go back to public transport. I agree with everything in the video. Too much money and stress.

We’ve gotten 300,000 miles on ALL the cars we have owned. And we have always bought new.
Our youngest car is a 2017 Honda. Gets great mileage. We bought it used in 2021 and it had 7,000 miles on it. But now it has 87,000 miles on it. We take it everywhere ! 44 mpg on the highway.
Make sure you get it out on the highways to “run it” around 60 mph. Got to “exercise” your car. 😂

I drive a 10 year old car with no plans of replacing it. We live in the country and I have to drive 30 miles round trip to go to the grocery store. I work from home most of the time I dive maybe 200 miles a month for business. My husband also has a pickup which he uses for work he works part-time but he needs to haul things . We just shopped around for the best buy on insurance. My husband does most of our vehicles maintenance and we haven't had a lot of serious problems. The biggest expense has been tires.

A couple important things: it’s hard on a vehicle to sit too long. Gaskets, as an example, become brittle and leak. Also, it’s important for the engine to reach optimal operating temp. I drive A LOT. I bought my car with 4 miles on it in November and today it has 21k miles 😂

I have a car and I'm a very good driver (no tickets, no accidents that were my fault), but the stress of driving and heavy traffic has gotten to me. There are so many aggressive drivers! I pull over and let them go by. I go the speed limit or a bit above, but it's not fast enough! One year, I was hit 5 times from behind, just sitting at red lights! They were all distracted drivers (texting, looking back at their kids, etc). After that, I hang back behind the car in front of me a bit, and when the car behind me is coming hot on my bumper, I pull forward. Ugh! 😵‍💫
I let my husband drive if he's in the car! Plus, now that I'm retired, I avoid rush hour traffic... that's helped!

I take the bus when I can or walk. My kids HATE it, but I LOVE it. Saves gas, money, and you get the benefit of exercise and fresh air. It does take longer to do things and you are relying on a bus and are at its mercy of being on time SOMETIMES, but overall, it saves a lot of money.

We both drive older vehicles and plan on keeping and driving them for many years. When traveling on vacation, we rent a vehicle and put the miles on the rental vehicle, not our personal vehicle. The rental vehicles typically get great mileage and have newer technology, too. That's one way we save money with vehicles.

One more thing to add, this is something I've done my self and plan on talking about on my channel... Have you after making this decision call your car insurance company and asked for a low mileage discount. I if you are not driving much that's another way to save money and while your at it ask them if you qualify for any other discounts too things change over time and you might not be aware of what is offered. If you are a safe driver allot of companies are offering to but a beacon or Bluetooth module in your care that will give you a discount based on on how you drive not how everyone else does. They can mail it to you so its not something you have to go out of your way to get, SO yea that's it one phone call might save you a ton of money over the years. What does everyone in the comments think of my suggestion, Let me know in the reply's and please like my comment.

My car has a safe driver tracker on it and it helps with our car insurance. Two cars, no collision insurance and low daily mileage made our insurance bill $1050 this year. We took the collision off because we can afford to get another car and my car is 13 yrs old so not worth much anyway.

Great share, Dawn. Joel and I have been making it with one car for years. We live about 5 miles from Joel’s restaurant and public transportation is almost nonexistent and he also often has to run errands for the restaurant that takes him into other areas of the city. So it’s necessary to have at least one car for us. But we’ve been able to keep our 16 year old car going for the 11 years we’ve owned it. 👍

We don't usually do a lot of driving. However, this year, we made 3 trips to a city 550 miles from us. We've also made 3 trips, so far, to a city 450 miles from us. That's quite a bit of traveling for us. We do visit our son, who lives 60 miles from us, at least once a month. But, that's the farthest we travel during normal times. I think most of us tend to shop near where we live as a matter of convenience and don't put a lot of miles on our cars. It's easy to put miles on your car where you live because everything is so spread out. I don't know how you figure travel time with your traffic. It's crazy. Love to all, Linda 💕

Hello Dawn my Honda truck is a 2007 that I purchased in 2009. It has a little over 154,000 miles on it. I hope I can get another 100,000+ miles on it.
When I bill for my gardening business per hour, I charge a full hour for the first hour. This helps with fuel for my trip getting there and back. Most of my round trip miles are nearly 30 miles. The area that I have all my work is a pleasant drive there and back. I gave up going in areas with high traffic, stressful driving and over 30 miles round trip.

I watch a couple of different "Doordash/Uber Eats" video channels and I do not underestimate the risk factor that these workers put themselves through. The traffic at all hours can be horrendous, and they are not making that great amount of money. One I watch makes around $20-$21 an hour after all the deductions. I used to do home health and would drive to 2-3 destinations, sometimes miles apart. But I live in a busy tourist area, so getting to someone's home 10 miles away can take an hour. Lots of stoplights, lots of traffic. I feel so bad for those who are out there "pounding the pavement" trying to keep a roof over their head and food on the table, with no savings to speak of, and a lot of life stressors. So staying close to home is a great way to save money, save your car, reduce stress and grab time back that you spend traveling all over the place. I cannot believe so people's commutes to work. I'd live in a hole in the ground before I drove the insane miles people do. I don't care what they pay. The salary gets killed with taxes, gas, clothes, car repairs, lunch out, and other related expenses. Good for you to keep it closer to home.

I gave up on driving and switched to an e-bike. Except for the coldest days of winter (rare where I live) when I cave to temptation and take an Uber, it's the perfect solution for me. I don't need a car to visit the supermarket, post office, public library, gym, doctor's clinic, drugstore, church and farmer's market (all of which are less than 2 miles from my house). My 3-wheel e-bike does everything I need for one-quarter the cost of a car.

Owning 1 car with low mileage used is a great saver. Do your online research on the toll that short trips only can take on the car. Consider a bit longer drive every so many days to keep your car in its best health. Under the Median just did a great video on MPG; I found tire inflation to be important to check when I reduced mileage on my car.

Spot on, so many people do not take into consideration our time/gas/safety etc. For me to drive to Target is 25 minutes each way, along with a $2.25 toll each way from the NJ TPKE, so t's costing me $5 besides gas to get there, instead I order on line, free shipping with $35, I do the same with Macys & JCP, besides the tolls for me to park there would be between $5 and $10, crazy right? joy of living in NJ. As far as traveling for work, unless we're making six figures, they don't pay for our commute and the stress of driving! great content Dawn.

Our truck is 10 years old with 37,000 miles on it. We're not sure how we'd replace it even with a cheap car in the future... we've always taken good care of it. Our last truck we had for almost 20 years. The traffic here in our small city in Texas is insane as our population swells. We go out early and avoid weekend driving except early early mornings. We actually started talking about strategies for if we stop driving in the future. We're completely retired. There is one HEB within walking distance. Doctors are about 7 minute drive. Family are within 10 minute drive but we've always been the drivers in fact we drive for my husbands sister ... her doctor appointments. She has 2 vehicles.
I don't want to be negative or fearful but it's rather frightening ... the cost of everything even with adequate income and no debt it's a struggle.

We purchased in cash in 2019 my husband wanted it because of really low mileage, my husband passed away almost 2 years ago. The car was very convenient but i got into a minor fender bender i was backing up and sides wiped a car next to me, i was going 5 miles an hour, i got a 3inch scrape on front bumper the other car claimed $3,700.damage and it was my fault. I was so upset with myself i lost my confidence. I sold my car got &17000.for it,i bought a scooter yesterday for $3,000. Im close to Walmart and two grocery stores and pharmacy, i don't want to endanger anyone, found out i need hearing aids got total checkup. Drove for 54 years a free taxi for my son and grandchildren, almost 75 so enough, im ahead $7000.a year not counting any repairs. Feeling relieved already

I totally agree with you. Great decision.
People who know me know i am a bulldog when it comes to people working hard and paying their own way....BUT....with fuel prices, insurance prices, parking prices, extended childcare costs due to additional driving time, etc. I totally understand young people wanting ( needing) to work from home. It used to be cost effective to drive to and from places of employment. Now, in many instances, it just is not cost-effective. We all need to earn money when we work. When transporting yourself to and from a work location is basically subsidizing your employer, time for a change.
I never used to feel this way at ALL.Times are tough right now.
    Better days are coming!

Your insurance company should know about your driving less miles, because your rate may go down because of that. I know mine did. It went down about $50 a month.
Some insurance companies can give you something you plug into your car to capture the mileage, so there’s proof of lesser mileage.

Check with your insurance company, Dawn. You may get a lower rate for the lower miles per month you are driving. Have a Blessed day.

If I have a month with an unexpected expense I can keep my driving down to one gallon of gas per month. it takes planning.

We save $ because I couldn't pass the written drivers test. So we save $5 a month not paying for my insurance. I am happy with that. He drives, I have no interest in doing that except 2-3 Sunday mornings where I drove for 5 min and take the backroads to church. No cars on the road that early. but there are hardly any cars, ever, on that road anyhow

@@Joce123 I guess I am stuck driving to church on Sundays. There is a Mom and Pop Health Food store just 5 min longer so I can at least, have food. It would be almost impossible to see a Cop, they. just don't go down that way. However, if I need to go to the Doctor, I will certainly need to take an Uber. That's way into town about 30 min round trip.

You drive “for five minutes” to go to church? Even though you didn’t pass a test? So - you can’t walk that far?

We had a 95TBird with 267000 miles. We dumped it as is needed an engine and it wasn't worth spending that much since the value of the buggy was very low. The other vehicle is a 98 Explorer Sport 186000 miles, runs great, we always maintained our cars. I have Dr appointments 2x per year, round trip 50 miles, everything else is within a mile or 2. We figure our buggy will last for a while. Or other car has collector car insurance so we don't drive it often as mileage is limited and in the event its totaled (hope not), I get more back than other insurance would give me for a total loss.

We live out in the country nw of Ft. Worth. Nothing is close but our nearest small town, which has a grocery store and a couple of dollar stores. That's about it. We buy the big box items a couple of times a month. As we get older, we'll probably have to get more things closer by, but it's going to add significantly to our budget. We don't drive nearly as much as we used to. Before my husband retired, he was driving 100 miles a day to his job in the Dallas area, so we were putting a lot of miles on our car. There are drawbacks to living out in the country, but I hope I never have to go back to living in town again. There's 0 traffic out here, and I love that.

We drive so much less since 2020. My co-workers and I have worked from home since March 2020, our gym is less than a mile away, and our church is about 2 miles away. Grocery shopping is the only reason for us to drive further away. The last time I took my car in for scheduled maintenance, the mechanic was like “Seriously? You put 600 miles on your car since your last oil change.”
