This is another of those tunes that everyone loves. Instantly memorable and with great changes, it offers a great chance to try different things. I like to incorporate a Stevie Wonder influence in various situations. Stevie's playing is wholly unique, I have yet to come across an artist that sounds like him, and I find that generally chromatic players tend to sound more towards Toots Thielemans or Tommy Rielly as opposed to Stevie.
One reason why it's hard to sound like Stevie is because he has a very strong and forceful way of playing. If you try to blow really hard into a Chromatic harmonica it will not respond, and generally you can't simply just blow really strongly and expect to get Stevie's sound. I have various theories and techniques on how to get a more Stevie Wonder type sound.
Generally speaking though, on harmonica the trick to blowing hard and still getting it to respond, is to think about speed of air, rather than the force of it. Thus, if you consider what you are doing with your mouth and embouchure, and try to narrow the passage you create with your mouth it does two things. First it you being able to blow so hard, and it means the air is moving faster in order to get through a small space in the same time.
The other thing about Stevie's playing is that within his note selection there is no excess, no note out of place. Every note is a perfect choice harmonically, every riff is or phrase is almost like a hook of sorts. He even avoids playing some notes that would harmonically fit, because they aren't' the strongest choice.
Interestingly, the sound and note selection concept often mean that when I do pop sessions I tend to go for a Stevie Wonder kind of sound. Often people will want you in the space of one or two seconds, or a couple of notes, nail everything. Or to do an 8 bar solo that an average person could sing. I also find that that is what people usually expect from chromatic harmonica in these situations.
    Thanks for watching/reading.

Although Philip is playing a Suzuki don't know the model. Perhaps he is getting sponsored by them. But in playing it's a question of taste. For me I'm a Hohner fan. From a harmonica player try Hohner chromonica 12 hole wood comb great natural sound . If your new try a C if not get into a Bb flat which is excellent for jazz tunes and Bossa Nova. But get a C first and learn from there. If your into Suzuki's then try those but start with a C until you get the feel of it. Good Luck👍

+Corrin Huddleston Thanks for your kind words. This track is from the Hal Leonard Play Along Series: www.halleonard.com/search/search.action?seriesfeature=JZPLYA&
This particular one is from Jazz Play Along Volume 52 - Stevie Wonder
Not many people know about the Hal Leonard Series as the Jamey Aebersold one has been around longer. I would recommend both though as they are quite different. The backing tracks for Hal Leonard do not have the piano and the bass panned entirely on different channels, instead the rhythm section is mixed as it would be as if it was a commercial CD.
When I use Jamey Aebersold tracks, I do some very basic Stereo Imaging to both cancel out the effect of the bass and piano being on entirely separate tracks.
In my opinion the two series are different, but one is not superior to the other. I would say though that in the whole the Jamey Aebersold are better to practice to, while the Hal Leonard ones are better to perform with. Although this is a generalisation and I love practicing and performing with both.
