no way... Batiste was on point the entire time. He threw in some really cool chord changes, but kept it subtle to let Stevie do his thing. He was holding back but providing a really solid foundation.
This is the first time I have seen this clip and I am Stephen Colbert Show fan! The performance was both Wonderful and and magical and you could tell it was unrehearsed! The opening note by Stevie was to allow Jon to get in key and from that point on Jon was on his own as Stevie's accompanist, except for a gentle nudge or two from Stevie, in this slightly jazzed and gospel rendition of the Star Spangled Banner graced with James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing." By the end of the piece you could clearly tell that Jon was overwhelmed by the moment and actually appeared close to tears.
Aisosa Ihama, Jon is agonising about the next chord. It's all off the cuff. He's struggling to harmonise with the melody. At one point he gives a little shake of the head in annoyance with himself. Stevie Wonder's commitment carries him through. In narrow musicianship terms he falls short but, in the great scheme of things, he and Stevie create a thing of beauty . . .
Jon Batiste is every musician's hero. I wanted to be a musician at one point in my life and then I sort of underdstood the responsibility of it all and I couldn't do it like Jon does it. He's the best.
Legend. Soulful rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner". Best I've heard ever! And for those of you who wish to poke fun at his hairline, try winning 25 Grammys, an Oscar, be a philanthropist and peace ambassador to the U.N. Oh, and write over 4,000 songs! Leave him alone!
Jon, so proud of what you've accomplished on this show! You're a true musician to have kept up with one of the greatest like that, what a moment! This version was much better than most vocal ones imho. Such a hard song and for yall to do the switch up like that midway was touching!
Yes, Jon didn't know what to do and that was the beauty of it, because when he messed up he got it right. Fishing around for the right chord he got the wrong chord and the wrong chord was, in the circumstances, the right chord. There is a moment quite near the beginning (I think it's around 00.52) when he shakes his head disapprovingly (disapproving of what he has just played) yet it is the sweetest moment musically, and that is partly to do with Stevie's conviction. Stevie makes everything right, including Jon's getting it wrong. Jon will blush and at the same time treasure this as he looks back . . .
The best part is right at the intro, the look of terror on Jon’s face, realizing at such a young age, he’s jamming with Stevie Wonder. No need tho, Jon is gifted in his own right, and comes from a family of serious artists. Still it was cute. I would be nervous too though. :)
This is One of The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded by Mister Stevie Wonder, and Introduced,by Mister Stephen Colbert at The Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City!
Note JB's perfect honor dap. Grasp the tricep and/or elbow to let the musician know you are in awe of their playing, and intend to invade their space with a congratulatory hug. Lean in with a quick, soulful, gesture. Clasp him/her about the shoulders. If male, you may exit the embrace with a gentle scapular bump. If, in rare situations when you are not left speechless, use direct phrases: "I felt that!", "Thank you!", "You're the best!" or quietly whisper, "Damn!"

Stevie's harmonica playing is like an extension of his vocal, which is already the most wonderful thing, pun intended.
Well said.👏👏👏
He's not playing the harmonica. He's playing the Wondermonica. With all his soul.
The Wondermonica...I like that.
You can tell John Batiste was caught up in the moment. Must have been amazing to play with Stevie Wonder.
He looks like a little boy - so sweet and eager
@@celticcheetah6371 I would too
there is so much sorrow behind this rendition
I hope we all find our way back to love again
there's a part where stevie plays a different tune. that tune is "Lift Every Voice and Sing". Everyone should listen to that!
+
I was wondering if it was just me that didn't quite recognize his Star-Spangled Banner!
I like the way Stevie worked THE NATIONAL BLACK ANTHEM(LIFT EVERY VOICE ND SING BY NATHANIEL DETT(?)) into this Star Spangled Banner.
Favorite rendition of the national anthem ever!
must be an honor playing with Stevie. It was amazing watching this live on election night.
Jon need credit for his awesome ability to jam with a legend. Great stuff!
I'm not even American, I'm Australian and this still made me cry. I guess you could say Steve wonders can do wonders in this world
Stevie had mastered the piano, organ, drums and harmonica by the ripe old age of 8.
YEAH RIGHT. You obviously don't play any musical instruments to believe that tripe. I guess you think he's really blind too?
This made me cry, and I ain't even American.
Kasino80 same I'm Australian and I'm balling my eyes out. I guess you could say Steve wonder can do wonders in this world
You're an American now.
does south-amercia count to?
Me, too from Korea
@Piano Piano bruh Mexico in North
Stevie Wonder truly is a national treasure. 🇺🇸
Amen and Amen
he switched to the black national anthem at 1:08 anyone catch that?
you mean the jazzy kind?
he means "Lift Every Voice and Sing"
caught it immediately. lift every voice..... that is really the american anthem, when you think of the words.
Absolutely
I've heard him do that years ago at the nba all star game in Auburn Hills... I think I was the only on that caught it..
he's showing that he's not just a singer but also a well rounded and talented musician and he did it so well i can't even be mad
To enjoy this with my eyes closed…….😢…….what a true musician. Truly brought a tear to my eyes. Definitely, “go vote!”…..for OUR country
That might be the first time I've seen Jon intimidated by the guest musician.
He just seemed to be a bit lost. Not knowing what chord to play etc. all the ad lib by Stevie Wonder did not help.
no way... Batiste was on point the entire time. He threw in some really cool chord changes, but kept it subtle to let Stevie do his thing. He was holding back but providing a really solid foundation.
Yeah Jon didn't know what to do haha
Dude has played with giants his whole life. People like Wynton Marsalis. Plus he is a studied improviser and jazz musician. Doubt he was lost
Yeah man i mean damn it's Stevie freaking Wonder!!
💜 I love these two performers! My brothers incorporated "Lift Every Voice" Bravo💖
Playing both anthems.......a message and call for unity!

The pain in Jon's face, he must be thinking about the meaning behind the lyrics.
bank on that.
coolocelot I saw it and ignored it because I couldn't tell if the person was mentally disadvantaged or an Internet edgelord
Shut up and sit down already

OH LORD
IF THERE’S A MAN IN THIS EARTH THAT IS PURE UNADULTERATED STYLE
THAT MAN IS STEVIE
He sure makes that harmonica sound good! Singing the Blues 😊🙏🏻
Only a sonic genius of Stevie's cosmic ability has the ability to use a child's toy to bring you to tears. Extraordinary...
This deserves a shit ton of views
Fr
This man must live for ever. Love ya Stevie
Go vote. Damn. That whole thing was beautiful.

That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard
Stevie Wonder to me is a beautiful ❤️👑🖤 spirit on a flesh. Soothing and heal .. he's musicianship is much bigger than life itself .
Thank you, Stevie❤️ That made this former soldier really proud!
Really wasn't expecting to cry tho. 😢 Beautifully done.
Last time i was here this early people were still standing for the national anthem
Domingooo V. So you never existed?
HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY TO THIS MUSICAL LEGEND
I'm not even American and I cried watching this
God bless you.
Only someone who has the highest aspirations for his country, and humanity can play like that.
goosebumps and it's not even my anthem!
God bless you.
One nation, under God, with liberty, and justice for
All.
Instant classic!!
Can you please perform this again at our most difficult times... Must unite and work together...
This got me so emotional 😢
Mr. Baptiste was star struck at first. He’s usually never nervous but he did seem nervous. Love them both. I love and enjoy Mr. cColbert as well.
I'm Brazilian, but I find the American anthem one of the most beautiful hymns in the world. My respect for the american people, which we love so much.
Stevie is a legend
Why does this only have 1,216 views? This is hilarious and sad at the same time.

That brought the waterworks....I couldn't help it.

Gran Steve, maravillosa armónica para un himno tan bonito.
This is so sad considering what happened the next day and the next four years, it was a farewell

Wow!! Just wow!!!!
That man is a national treasure
I needed that.
That's so wild, it sounds like Stevie Wonder!!!!
awesome!!
The Keyboardist was making his Melodica sound like an Electric Piano

At 1:08 he switched to Lift Every Voice And Sing #legendary
This made me so proud to be an Australian. The 51st state of America.
What? Australia was founded because britain needed a place to put their murderers and rapists lol.
Are you drunk?
the british werent the first here
nah in 2 years time we'll go from EU member to the 51st state of the US if Donald and Nigel have their way
God bless you.

Jean Baptiste was truly moved... And the rest of us too.
Lift Every Voice....tears
Wiping tears
i've never knew u can accually make good sopunds with that thing
Que maravilla
Did this get re-uploaded or am I dreaming this?
Jesper Jansson I think he performed on another late night talk show a few days ago
No? It is definitely a reupload, but I don't know why...
It's a reupload, there;s probably some legal issues with Stevie Wonder performing, since all the songs he did that day were eventually reuploaded.
That first part sounded like the beginning to sesame street XD
What a great playing of the National anthem by Stevie Wonder
Donald Trump may destroy America but Stevie Wonder will live on.
This is America, this is what you should be. Please make Trump go away!
typical dem. cant leave stupid arrogant, self serving politics out of anything, shame
Jon's melodica should've got it's own mic too
Not sure how you missed the MIC attached directly to it
Hope it's working, or Jon just needs to play up
Nice connection from a fellow 13 (oct) ❤❤❤😘
Great performance. Does anybody know what harmonica and what key he plays the USA anthem?
Superbe !
May 13th. Good men came from that day. My father was one of those men.
