That was just alot of unnecessary hype. Ali needed to retire after '78, and never fight Holmes. What choice did Holmes have? ali is the one that did something wrong, really. he was in no shape to fight at that point but insisted on it happening (maybe for the huge pay day. maybe because he's frickin' ali and box is what he does). holmes couldn't go in there, as world champ, and take it easy on him. he had to put it to him. ali probably would have been offended if holmes took it easy on him.

The fight vs Holmes and Ali was one of the hardest things I’ve ever watched 😢 I remember it to this day. Ali was my dad’s idol, Ali and Sugar Ray got my dad into boxing, and he was telling little 9yo me that Ali didn’t belong in there anymore. It’s the first I’d ever seen of this legend, and couldn’t imagine him being the greatest ever. He still is.
Ali had Parkinson's disease since at least 1975 from when the symptoms really began to be noticeable. In the fight against Holmes, it was extremely noticeable due to the lack of mind and body coordination and lack of activity from Ali. He knew what to do but his body would not respond at all. Now, had Ali been free of Parkinson's disease, even an older (but healthy) Ali would have beaten a prime Holmes.
Larry Holmes in his prime was fantastic. I live literally 20 minutes from his house and have met him on multiple occasions. He’s an extremely nice man.
I've always liked Holmes, except when he made that comment about Rocky Marciano, but oh well, nobody's perfect, but really it was uncalled for. Holmes ended up bitter for not being able to surpass or at least tie Marciano's record.

He's without question a top 10 heavyweight of all time. People hated him back in the day but he's gotten the respect as time has passed. He was absolutely dominant in his prime and it's unfortunate that him and Tyson fought when he was past that prime because it could have been an all time great fight. Not to say that I think he would have beaten young driven Tyson, but he certainly wouldn't have crumbled so easily.
@@eggoslayer1001 Prime Larry would beat prime Tyson in my opinion because Tyson struggled with long jabbers like James Tillis who took Tyson the distance… Holmes was more skilled than tillis, better jab, faster, and more punching power he would slap Tyson with the jab for most of the fight and let Tyson use up his energy then in the late a rounds he would go inside and hammer Tyson and knock him out… and if Tyson makes it past Holmes’s jab the best he can do is knock him down cus Holmes keeps getting up like what we saw him do against Ernie Shavers
@@TheGOAT-dr1sq The man who could withstand Shavers, Norton, and Weaver would have worn Tyson down and taken him out. The outcome (in my opinion) would be Holmes by KO in the 11th round.
I wish I coulda seen Tyson live in his prime. For someone who was such a beast to also earn and show respect for his predecessors really shows that he had the potential to grow into the absolute legend he is today.

Hollywood couldn't come up with a story as great as this even in their golden years. The bond Tyson shared with Ali is beautiful & the fact he got revenge for his idol is the stuff Hollywood could only dream of.
Oh yeah? Sorry, but that's naive at best when it comes to professional sports, especially boxing. A man's reflexes just aren't as fast when he's, say in his mid to late 30's compared to his 20s. Put an elite fighter, such as Tyson was in his 20s, against the 38 yr old elite fighter, Larry Holmes, and the result? Holmes got destroyed.
I appreciate BLTV Classic for how he makes videos like this. Clearly this recap is pointing to Mike's greatness, but the video was made in a great way to appreciate all fighters involve including Holmes. Holmes is one of the most underappreciated talent in boxing, and i would slightly agree with Mike, had he face Holmes in his prime, it would be a match for the ages.
This may be the best fight documentary I've seen in many years, and it's not because of the fight video. It is because it shows the relations, the respect and the humanity shared between Ali and Tyson, while also giving due credit to Holmes.
Both champs deserve credit. Holmes' consistency over time was incredible. I think he badly underestimated Tyson in this fight and needed some tune ups first. But if you take a fight you take responsibility for the preparation, and that's all on him.
Jesus Christ - just from seeing that footage of Holmes and Ali sparring - it’s not wonder Ali had massive neurological issues later in life - they are literally trying to slam each other’s heads off
The world was devastated when Ali lost but Holmes honored him too by not holding back imo but it’s such a great story to hear Tyson train and claim that victory for his idol

-14 year old Mike Tyson to Muhammad Ali during a phone conversation the day after Ali lost to Holmes.
Mike Tyson made sure to keep that promise. Just imagine the pride that both Mike Tyson and Ali both had as a result of Tyson not only beating Holmes, but dominating him.

Tyson was unreal in his prime, considering how quickly he moved up the ranks to be heavyweight champion. Its one in a million shot, but you could see his spirit in his eyes right from the start, unbeatable.
There are so many legends in this video. That ending clip of Ali and Tyson was beautiful. Holmes dominating Mercer was epic.

Mike being the one to avenge Ali is absolutely legendary, wish I would’ve been around to watch the heavyweight fights in the 80’s and 90’s
That was just alot of unnecessary hype. Ali needed to retire after '78, and never fight Holmes. What choice did Holmes have? If he didn't fight Ali, he would look afraid and have a damper put on his reputation. After he slaughtered Ali, the press railroaded him and just gave him a raw deal. Holmes in his heyday was an awesome fighter, but after the Spinks fight, Holmes would've been better off by staying retired too. He was past his prime when he fought Tyson, who was too quick and powerful for Holmes.
@@kevinmalone3210 and Holmes was begging the ref for a few rounds to stop the fight against Ali like you said a bunch of hype cause there was nothing to avenge
the 90s was the true golden age of heavyweights. More contenders, bigger, stronger men in much better physical condition. Tyson and Holyfield were so ripped guys had to really up their game or be quickly destroyed. They raised the bar for sure.
Revenge for what? Larry loved Ali. Blame the boxing commission that made Ali a mandatory. Skip ahead 2 years and Larry kicks Mike azz. Larry fought better competition in his comeback than Mike fought his whole career. This is #nothingness hype.
@@apex_prowler95 ...I concur, totally!!! Ali should have remained in retirement, PERIOD!!!
When I was a kid Mike Tyson had the worst reputation. The truth is he was just a sweet dude that got in a lot of trouble in fame and everyone shamed him for his problems. It’s beautiful to see how he’s turned his life around and how he’s so respected. He is one of boxing’s greatest.
Same here, lots of magazines about his temper but everything I see him in he’s so humble and soft spoken
It did not help Tyson was surrounded by sharks like Don King... 🤮
Mike so humble. He was no monster, just a great fighter. Love ❤ this man.

Larry was a great champion who was snubbed his entire career.
One of the best jabs Ive ever seen.
Well said

ali is the one that did something wrong, really. he was in no shape to fight at that point but insisted on it happening (maybe for the huge pay day. maybe because he's frickin' ali and box is what he does). holmes couldn't go in there, as world champ, and take it easy on him. he had to put it to him. ali probably would have been offended if holmes took it easy on him.
Reminds me how people treat Jake Paul today. Obviously Jake Paul is weaker though. These punches are on another level.
@@conedx That was Don King whispering into Ali's ear to convince him to fight Larry. Ali had a hard time getting a boxing license, because of his condition.

Larry Holmes made 20 defenses of the Heavyweight title over a seven year reign and could/should have retired 48-0. Larry is considered to have the best jab in history and could use it as an offensive weapon to make openings for his slashing right hand.
@@DRose2Fast Ali himself said Thrilla In Manila took a toll on him despite winning it...
Holmes in legend in and out of the ring, all the good work he does for the local community is something not spoken about enough.
Seeing the clip of Ali and Tyson and how happy Tyson is to be around him made me shed a tear you can tell Ali was his hero sleep in peace Mr. Muhammad he literally died from doing what he loved

Mike's response was beautiful..a true legend of the game.
Always love these Tyson recaps
Holmes was the most underappreciated champ of all time, there I said it
He's without question a top 10 heavyweight of all time.
@@eggoslayer1001
Prime Larry would beat prime Tyson in my opinion because Tyson struggled with long jabbers like James Tillis who took Tyson the distance… Holmes was more skilled than tillis, better jab, faster, and more punching power he would slap Tyson with the jab for most of the fight and let Tyson use up his energy then in the late a rounds he would go inside and hammer Tyson and knock him out… and if Tyson makes it past Holmes’s jab the best he can do is knock him down cus Holmes keeps getting up like what we saw him do against Ernie Shavers
@@TheGOAT-dr1sq The man who could withstand Shavers, Norton, and Weaver would have worn Tyson down and taken him out. The outcome (in my opinion) would be Holmes by KO in the 11th round.

Psychedelics have helped Mike bloom into his full potential as a human being. He has such a beautiful mind and heart. I'm so proud of him. He's come so far. #salute #love #respect
Drugs didn't help him. He'd be better without the.. no human needs drugs. They need to address their trauma.

Can't get over how mature and skilled Mike was as a champion during his first year's...let's not forget he's the youngest heavy weight of all time.
And smallest. (Height-wise)
He was fighting every month in the mid 80's. Boxers at that level now barely fight once or twice a year.

The slow nod Tyson gives Ali. 💯 a “Yes Sir.” Awesome.
No one gives Mike Tyson credit for how gracious he was here.
Both champs deserve credit. Holmes' consistency over time was incredible. I think he badly underestimated Tyson in this fight and needed some tune ups first. But if you take a fight you take responsibility for the preparation, and that's all on him.
