I sprinkle zinnia seeds right over my tulips, so by the time it’s time to cut the yellowed and dried up tulip leaves back, the zinnias have come up and are growing

Great idea and you can hide the yellowing leaves of the tulips down on the bed surface as they are the "food for next year".

Don't take short cuts on the terrace, if it doesn't drain well (keep it slightly slanted downward direction (away from) cottage rather then flat level) then you'll have a bigger problem later that will take more time and money to fix. Add some sand too.

  • @kellyrobin718
    @kellyrobin718 2 года назад +27

Hi Elise, after you put a few inches of the gravel for your patio, you must put a small layer of soft sand and level that to place the pavers evenly on top of .... and before the sand, the gravel should be compacted by tampering it down...❤️ take your time it’s best to do it right the first time so it does not sink and become un even...❤️ from Florida, USA..kelly🌴

You are so industrious, leveling an area of dirt is super hard. Your “secret garden terrace” is so cute and doesn’t look bad even if it is not perfectly level.
Another Utube channel I watch is called “Hop-along Hallow” with Jeri Landers ( an artist and gardener) is one I think you would like. She often calls her gardens “perfectly imperfect” and does all kinds of neat paths that I know are not perfectly level. She lives in Tennessee in the US. She would like your channel too. Check it out, I think you guys are kindred spirits even though she is older than you. 🥰

You are such a beautiful young lady in appearance, in your heart and your spirit. I love watching your videos. Regarding your tulip flowers and other bulbs that need to stay in ground for the leaves to die off, I recently watched a garden video by Dainty Diaries (from Ireland). She braided all the tall leaves together then rolled them towards the ground while they dried out. It was actually a decorative look for the garden.

@@EliseBuch I watch Dainty Diaries videos, too. She does a lot on her own too, even doing her own home remodeling or organizing. I love your garden and you have the cutest home, I love how proud you are and how happy it makes you. 😁… I was a little kid in the 70s and my mom always bought me the cutest dresses with big flowers or wide white collars and white cuffs with shiny buttons, or with lace, daisies, bold colors and plaids, and different color Patton leather shoes for that era. My two brothers had nice clothes too, but they were always getting dirty playing outside or ripping their jeans climbing trees, just being boys, and my mom constantly patched up or sewn the rips. My mom saved a lot of our kids clothes in boxes from the 70s, I need to see if she still has them in her storage space in her backyard. My mom has several fruit trees, so when I visit her, I come home with bags of fresh organic fruits, even avocados. 😁

When your bulb flowers finish, cut them off so all of the plant energy goes toward the bulb instead of the seed that forms after the flower. Your garden looks beautiful and I love your lilac tree, one of my favorite smelling flower. I live in Florida, USA and they will not grow here too hot, they need the cold dormancy period. After the terrace/patio pavers are done, fill the empty spaces with a contrasting color small rocks. This way you won't have to worry about cutting the pavers to fit.

  • @scharfam5770

Hello Elise. You can cut/remove the stems of the tulips and just leave the leaves alone until they turn brown then remove if you want to. The cottage is so beautiful. Sand would be helpful to level the terrace. I would put enough sand to to raise the surface of the patio blocks to be at ground level. That amount of sand should also help with leveling. Hope your nap was lovely. 🌸💜

Elise, did you cut down the dead tree at your cabin? You can let it stay and plant vines around it. Gardeners World/ bbc Chanel, showed an orchard of Wisteria growing on dead trees. It was amazing. I saw wisteria in a garden scene on one of your videos. Also, for little curtains in your cabin, try sewing some out of dress fabrics. You could even use a wedding dress. There is a lot of beautiful prints in your vintage dresses. You could use a different fabric for each window or piece fabric so each window has a bit of each pattern. And last, You may like to use vintage table cloths, especially if they have stains. You could make a vintage patch work dust ruffle to cover what’s under your bed. Anyway, I can’t stop myself from generating ideas. I really enjoy you videos.

Move the rocks out about a foot in front of tulips and plant zinnias and they will hide the tulip leaves as they feed the tulip bulbs. Also you can also braid the tulip leaves when the tulip flowers are gone and zinnias will still cover easier a and that still allows the leaves to feed the tulip bulbs. And then you can compost the dried tulip leaves or other wise dispose then when they are all dried out. Hope my rambling makes sense. Love your garden. It’s beautiful. Blessings from California 🌴💕

  • @sirgnome1114

Yes....don't cut back your tulip or daffodil foliage. The bulbs will absorb the nutrients from the leaves. Plus that is how the bulbs will multiply. Eventually you can split them in the fall to place in other parts of your garden(s). Why not make a new row of summer bulbs, plants or seeds in front of the row of spring flowers. Oh...do try to get the perenials. I just love what you are doing in your garden and little cabin. How lucky you are. I know a lot of hard work goes into your passions. When you were modeling the maxi dress it brought me back to my "groovy" days. Not that I was ever groovy. I was always a prude. Now I say...if you got it, baby, flaunt it. You are a treat to watch. Don't be fooled by the Sir Gnome bit - don't want you to think some creepy old man is hitting on you! We call those flowers of all different shades "lilacs". My lilacs are passed their prime now. How fast the blooming seasons go. Enjoy - I know you are.

To aid you with your levelling, put down two skinny planks of the same dimensions (especially width and height) running the length of your terrace. Make sure they are level with each other on the ground -use a spirit level. Have the height of the planks deep enough so first a layer of gravel (for drainaige and surface stability) can be laid in between the two planks. When the gravel is relatively even with the top of the planks get a plank or spirit level long enough that it can rest on both planks, then starting at one, pull, scrape this plank down to the end, as you pull the leveller across the two planks excess gravel will be scraped off. Your surface will then be level. Repeat this process with a layer of sand and try to compact the sand if you can. Then lay the pavers. When using just sand, the pavers have a tendancy over time time to sink individually and become uneven, A gravel layer helps to prevent this. It is also good to slant the layers slightly so water drains away from the cottage. You can do this by initially cuttting and packing the ground under the two planks until they sit on a slight incline. The planks must still be level with each other - both planks should be the same height as each other at the top of your slope and at the bottom. Eg:both planks might sit 6cm above the ground at the top of the incline and be 3cm above the ground at bottom of the slope.

If you would like your tulip bed to look beautiful all season, I would suggest finding plants with leaves that you love and then their flowers will make them even more special. For instance, Heuchera(Full sun-shade) comes in all sorts of warm colours with tiny bell flowers floating above the leaves. Alchemilla mollis(Full sun-shade) is bright lime green with a lacy green edge and chartreuse flowers.
Of course if you’re just looking for flowers you might like Echinacea(Full sun). They have similar blooms to sunflowers but are so much easier to care for.

I know you're exhausted with the patio, but you might find it easier to level as well as provide a better bedding for the stone if you use a finer sand as the base. You can leave what's there but get sand rather than the dirt you have to lay over the dirt and then level the stones over it. It will make a big difference and you'll be glad you put the extra effort in now rather than having wobbly uneven stones later. Then sweep the sand over the stones to fill in the crevices and that will hold them better in place and prevent weeds and debris from getting between the stones. I've had my patio for years now and its level and clean still.

I saw someone fixing up their garden, their tulips had just finished flowering. Instead of digging up the bulbs, she plaited (yes, like your hair) the leaves of the plants, so that they don't look messy while dying back, she just looped the plait under and it sat there. I thought that was a great idea! And then she just popped plants in around the soon to die off greenery.

I think you can put the stones and then, those little spots, could be filled with cement (I think you should have white cement in Denmark to which you could add some color). Also a good idea could be to fill the spots between stones (in the rocky flower) with cement and little natural colored stones, I mean there are a lot of types of little stones that you could put on the surface and smashed them a little bit into the cement, and then whash the extra cement, so you can see the little stones. Thank you for letting us share with you all the beatufill things yo do in your garden. Regards from Chile 🇨🇱💕

Garden is looking lovely. The Geraniums were very pretty and I loved how you put one in a matching pink pot. In regards to the Terrace you probably should not have put down that semi crushed stone. You really needed to put a good 3-6 inches (7-14cms) of "Builders Sand" and flattened it down. The pavers should be easier to lay. You don't really need to remove what you put down already just put the sand on top. Builders Sand is not as fine as beach sand and is a lot "stickier" so it is a good base for pavers.

Marigolds, Impatience and moss roses bloom all summer and you need some Pansies.Yes you need some sand between your patio stones, to hold them in place and give a finished look. The sunset was so beautiful, made me sigh and feel wistful. Sunsets here are beautiful too but the view is blocked. I miss visits with my sister. She lives in a flat area and you can see the sun comes up and set. I used to get up,early when I spent a few summers there. Walk through the wet grass in the morning, enjoying the coolness before the heat of the day. Singing and praying. Then spending the day playing with her kids and neighbors kids. Under the big willow tree...with the tire swing.

Your flowers are absolutely beautiful!! What a dreamy little cottage! I just hate that bloomed tulips don't last too long or they may bloom early and then we get a random frost which kills them, or animals will eat them, I'd just rather have other perennials with year round interest. I don't know what your gardening zone is, but Heuchera, Hosta, Hellebores, Brunnera, Astilbe, Penstemon, Lobelia, and Pulmonaria are some of my favorites that would still give you the cottage feel and fit within your flower beds. :)

Tulips: you must pinch off the dead flower, including the seed pod. It is best to leave them in the ground so that the foliage can send all of its strength to the bulb. However, this means a period of unsightly, yellowing foliage.
Alternative: once you have pinched off the dead flower heads with the seed pod, dig up your tulip bulbs and place them in a container and cover them in soil. The foliage however, must still be exposed to the light. Put them in an area where they will not annoy you. In the fall, inspect your bulbs for mildew or virus and if they are clean, plant them in your garden beds.
If you do not want to dig up the tulips, interplant or seed other species among them and eventually the new growth will cover the unsightly yellow of the foliage.

Pant them somewhere else where you don't mind looking at the green. Those were pretty daffodils. Love the new palnts you bought today!!!

It was so cute when you said you were going to sit in the shadow. We would say - going to sit in the shade. Bravo on speaking multiple languages.

I'm behind on videos and catching up so I don't anticipate you seeing this, but gladeolus are great bulbs to pair with tulips. They come up as the tulips are dying and provide summer blooms. I've just done that this year and am so excited to see their colors

The cottage and flowers are lovely! You're really making fine progress with your projects! One thing:: if you tap the base of the cut lilacs til they split a little, they'll absorb more water, and last longer. Just use the bottom side of an ordinary table knife. Thanks! 🌱🌹

Jane, thank you for this tip! I never knew that and my lilacs always droop so quickly....

@@carav4500 Hi, Cara! This works on large, old fashioned lilacs, but not on French or other small varieties, unfortunately. Those are just meant ro be admired in the yard, I guess! 🌿 💜 🌿

My garden has a wild slope in two directions, we have built various terraces over the years, to plant veggies and flowers in, for a greenhouse and a poly tunnel, and for seating areas. Honestly, I don’t think a single one of them is completely level. As long as it’s not sloping massively towards your house so the water collects there, it will be fine. It looks really cute by the way, it’s going to be lovely when it’s finished! ❤️🌻

A butterfly bush would also be great in your garden. In my garden we have buddleja weyeriana 'flower power', which has purple, pink and orange flowers and it blooms almost all summer

Your new flowers are so nice, the pink lopsided one, here in the states we call a geranium, and that one is just gorgeous. You do have to take the dead flowers off, they zap the energy going back into the bulb for nest spring. I think you could easily prick out some of the wildflowers from each of your window boxes and just plant those in the tulip bed. Those seedlings look plenty close together and you'd have a bit of a head start with those already popping up. Your garden will be looking so beautiful over summer. In the states "Do like this"...that's rake =^)

I have done paving and it is back breaking work, you need some cute work boots to do the tramping down. I use a straight piece of wood to check my levels about a metre long or ideally use a spirit level. But as long as you get the base well compacted it will be good enough with the pavers you are using. Take your time and take care of your back!
