- Dionne Warwick sings 'Walk on By'' at age 24 live in an intimate restaurant bar, the '27 Club' in Knokke, Belgium, on New Year's Eve 1964. The Burt Bacharah/Hal David protege on the cusp of fame. The hit single was originally a b-side, recorded on the same day as 'Anyone Who Had a Heart'.
The full concert recording of 27 minutes is well worth seeing:- • Dionne Warwick - live ...
The Wall Street Journal has a story about the drama and background to the song. Here's the public first paragraphs - you have to subscribe for the full story:-
“Walk On By,” written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach for singer Dionne Warwick in 1963, was unusual for its cool sophistication and lyrics from a woman’s perspective on a failed relationship. After the song was released in ’64, the single reached No. 6 on Billboard’s pop chart.
Recently, Mr. Bacharach, Ms. Warwick and studio pianist Artie Butler recalled the song’s evolution. Mr. Bacharach’s latest album, released in December, is a deluxe edition of “Blue Umbrella” (Big Yellow Dog), with co-writer and singer Daniel Tashian. Edited from interviews.
Burt Bacharach: "In 1963, lyricist Hal David and I were focused on Dionne Warwick. We had signed her a year earlier to record our songs, and we were signed to Scepter Records.
Dionne had a singular voice that was perfect for us-young, earthy, edgy and confident. The first three singles we wrote for her-“Don’t Make Me Over” in ’62 and “This Empty Place” and “Make the Music Play” in early ’63-charted but weren’t big pop hits.
Hal and I began writing “Walk On By” in mid-’63 at our office in New York’s Brill Building. ... "

During the most racist time. She walks with pure confident. Audience in pure awe hearing this African American Queen grace the stage
This is in Europe. A lot of
Black artists went over there bcuz they would have more success!
If you have talent, you let it speak your worth unlike today where it's all talk but no bite.
She has an amazing voice
*Dione is a Black American artist, not African.
wasnt "the most racist time" at all.
she was 24. she played to the audience and the camera simultaneously. she sang the lead vocal AND the background vocal. this is why someone is in every hall of fame.
The only black lady in the room!
Style strength and the most beautiful voice.
Irreplaceable ❤
Dionne got charm, and her charm can cross any racial barriers...lol
And only 23 years old during the Civil Rights era.
HER CHEEKBONES!!!
The higher the cheekbones tho closer to God ❤
Don’t mean to disrespect her but I thought she had some kind of tumor on her left cheekbone, it doesn’t look good :o
@@asmena it's just a boil - and the best thing; she DOESN'T CARE! It's what happens when you're on tour and have to eat whatever you find on the road.
@@asmena You are right! She had it removed and in later years, late 60s-70s, you could see the scar on her cheek.
She was not an attractive young lady. She actually looks better now as an old lady

People be underestimating Dionne when they have no idea how difficult it is to sing a Bacharach tune on its original arrangement.
Dionne is one of the best and these haters have no idea what they're talking about. Dionne came from an era where control of the voice was in the norm. Her family is also legendary, her and Whitney were destined to be nurtured into wonderful vocalists.
I’m one of the chicken breast men who can sing on a Bacharach tune on a drop a dime
pysch friends did her in
He wrote them specifically for her in her own unique voice. It's the reason others can't quite replicate or sing her songs. Props.
Especially since it’s not all 4/4 and Burt plays around with time like nobody’s business
Appreciate Dionne while shes still here. She’s contributed a lot to music.
Amen!
Classically trained, can read music, beautiful, and confident. One of my favorites of all time. This song is timeless.
Her confidence on this performance is everything and you can tell she’s really enjoying herself, love it!
Enjoy yourself onstage is key
Especially in this room of white folks at this time
@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadona Yeah, no black folks to start fighting or shooting.
@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadona I know that’s right!
@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadonaThis was in Belgium. Belgian whites were a little different from White Americans and a little more open minded.
they killed it , and that band didn't miss a beat , I was 9 years old in 1964 and I remember that being played in my home, I just celebrated my 67th birthday and this still sounds great
Me, too!
I remember thus song very well and turned 69 in April
I was born in 1995, but prefer music like this
I thought the title lied ! So this is really from 1964? Wow
I Hope you’re having a great day

Her voice will make blushing flowers rise ❤
All that envy energy in the crowd & she still walked 🐐🔥
She is simply gorgeous, and what a performance! Such talent.
Yep and she went through all of this drug free
@@joejose8433 Not true. It's well known that she smokes marijuana lol.
I agree. Love her and Whitney!
A family filled with magnificent singers
Can't believe this is 50 years old and she's still rockin! Love you Dionne❤
60 years old
A star had already been born. Dionne Warwick was only 23 or 24 here. She had such poise and command of the audience. Her sound was mezzo-soprano superb.
she actually started out as a soprano and sang as one in her gospel groups
Agreed!
All eyes on the Black Queen. 👸🏾😍
I'm loving all the visuals here!! Especially loving her sass, her dress, and her natural hair with an abundant, proud kitchen!! Yass!!
She dressed up that bar with her presence 🥰
Awesome! Hard to believe it was 60 years ago. I'm 68 and heard it many times on 93KHJ in LA. This was, and still is, one of my favorite Bacharach songs. Dionne nailed it. Classy lady and she was in command that night.
I never knew how much I needed this in my life until yesterday when I came across this. There is something so captivating about this (besides her magnificent performance), I think it’s just how she commands the room. Truly amazing
I met her..so kind and sensitive..truly a national treasure!
Cissy Houston said she changed after solo success
Hahaha! Not one black customer in that club!! 1964.
Noticed that, too. Sign of those times. A truly stunning performance...what grace she had even at that age.
@@adonaiyah2196 She was always a solo performer - albeit with the support of monumentally talented Bacharach/David. People do change with age. She was also selling real estate at some stage. We are all humbled by life's changing fortunes and best navigate them as gracefully as possible. They are an enormously talented family of singers and i hope they have found some peace.
Can we talk about her captivating eyes? 😍
Yes!
Well but voice 😍

and boy, can she sing! Happy Birthday, Dionne!
I didn’t know I shared a birthday with her!! how wonderful💕
@amber stell Only you and about 22 million other people.
Small world, isn't it. 😂
Dionne Warwick topped the charts again in 2023 when Singer/rapper Doka Cat used a sample of Ms. Warwick's "Walk on By", on Doja Cat's song "Paint the Town Red". It was the first time since 1986 that Ms Warwick has had a number #1 hit.
Coolest lady in the whole room!
The Beautiful, classy, elegant, GOD gifted, talented, Dionne Warwick!!!!!! Blessed with a lovely signitured sound, her very own!!!! Thanks for sharing this rare, classic footage!!!!!!
Thanks; yes really deserves to be seen.
Impeccable indeed. She even sings the backup vocals!
My mom used to listen to these. She grew up in Motown so obvs I got the pleasure to hear these masterpieces. 2024 and Ms. Warwick is still a Queen. ❤
Everyone can sing this song but not like Dionne. Her dynamics in singing is unmatched.
I can’t imagine feeling fear and anger while having to sing this.. like… the goat period
This woman is magnificent. What a sound..Her voice is magic..
I think that Dionne is the greatest pop singer ever. She would toss in vocal acrobatics that would slay most singers today as if it were absolutely nothing. She jumps all over the place in this piece and goes from sweet to funky to operatic to pensive -- really I can't think of another singer who can do what Dionne did.
She seems to glide effortlessly through this beautiful emotional song. I remember it well from the sixties and this performance still feels fresh and immediate.
Perfect example of how music surpasses the boundaries of all colors and ethnicities. Music is that language for our souls.
If you’re correct then please explain why there is not one single person of color in this old ‘video’. I’m really not trying to be contentious but isn’t it obvious that this was produced by a group of old white men with the singular purpose of making money from a white audience? I’m reasonably sure they had little or no interest in promoting Dionne or in her wonderful music! She’s in her 80’s now but her music will live forever thank God! 🎶
@@SaneTXJane Remember, if you will research carefully, the year 1964 is the legal END for racial segregation. In other words, people can now mingle and work together without having to use racially divided public facilities and transport.
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), so long as "separate but equal" facilities were provided, a requirement that was rarely met in practice. Then came the doctrine's applicability to public schools WHICH WAS UNANIMOUSLY overturned in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren. In the following years the WARREN COURT further ruled AGAINST racial segregation in several landmark cases including Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States (1964), which helped bring an end to the Jim Crow laws.
The video that you see was PRODUCED in 1964, the beginning year that ended racial segregation.
BRAVO to all these wonderful WHITE AMERICANS who made this hallmark journey to accept and appreciate a BLACK PERFORMER and a WOMAN that bravely sings among them. They have let those prejudice go out the door (If they had any in the past) I see this as an invitation for others to do the same. That it is alright now to mingle with anyone outside your race. This exemplifies to let go of your apprehensions, fears, and worries due to past trauma.
Now regarding to "white men" with a singular purpose of making money from a white audience, WOW, as if we are psychic enough to read their minds eh?
it is unwise to judge an individual as to what purpose or multi-purpose they have in mind in making this production.
YES, I will agree, they want to make money. That's the ulterior motive of the producer or executive financier, they want that ROI (return of investment for those not aware).
But could making money be the ONLY PURPOSE? If that is so, I WILL STILL SHAKE THEIR HAND and THANK THEM for BACKING UP this music and artist with their money. WITHOUT THEM, this wouldn't have been possible. Without their open mind and possible artistic vision, then we wouldn't have these great hits. It may take another year or so to find another artist of a different race to finally break through the scene.
Could you imagine if they found a CHINESE or FILIPINA lady singing for a white audience in 1964, would the impact be the same? How about a half black or half white artist? Would that also create a controversy?
So why did the producer or producers feel the need to do this when they know it could create anger and possible violence?
WHAT IF their other purpose is to make a breakthrough? How about creating enough controversy for the artist to be the TALK OF THE TOWN? How about the exploration of a different facet of 60's JAZZ/Latin styled music? Why not make a MUSIC VIDEO to show others that THIS IS THE END OF SEPARATION. This is a video for INVITATION.
THE SHOCK VALUE is enough as it is to keep everyone curious who are still in their zone of RACIAL DIVIDE. It takes time to break through YEARS and DECADES, and CENTURIES of discrimination. Maybe that's one reason you still don't see a single black person in the background audience. Maybe the director is still not comfortable with the idea of MIXING people yet in the U.S. so they filmed this at the 27 Club, in BELGIUM where there is no racial divide to begin with.
This is 1964, like I said, the BEGINNING YEAR that ended segregation LEGALLY in the U.S.
Lastly, not all "WHITE" Americans come from one single lineage. Look carefullly, you might find Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or even Persians in this audience. But who's to know? I see nothing but people just having a good time and I thank them for being there. The producer is probably thinking "OKAY BRING THE MUSIC OUT, THEN LET'S MAKE A VIDEO, LET'S END THE DIVIDE little by little"
Because not everyone is ready yet so it's best to keep the audience as it is.
Behind the music could be MILLIONS of people just listening in; JAPANESE, GERMANS, PERUVIANS, BRAZILIANS, etc.
If you're still having doubts, then please research and try to find a crew member or anyone in the production team that made this. They could probably give you a better answer. Not sure how the producer will react to your question (if he's still alive).
Not sure if he will directly say "Oh yeah I took her in because I want to MAKE MONEY! She was a gamble for the company but hell I'm glad I rolled the dice!"
Except for the fact that EVERY person in that club besides Dionne was white.
All MC said is that music surpasses color which it does. Dionne surely surpassed being the only black person in the room. “Walk on by” definitely surpassed color when it was out.
@@UNDERGROUND2000 The film location was in Belgium, not in the U.S. You're gonna give the casting director a hard time to find black people in that area.
She was very captivating. Dionne does grab her audience by the balls👏🏻
And also by the ovaries if you got 'em.
Heck ya!🤘
She looks flawless and sounds impeccable...The whole family has pure talent in their DNA....

I was in kindergarten when this was recorded and this song still haunts me to this day. As with many of Burt Bacharach's songs, it enters your brain and never leaves. He is probably one of the most recognized song writers in history.
