@@hzr815 He also doesn't mention the size of the pads he tried. I've read that 0.5mm pads are the right size for between the heat sync and the black plate. The ThermalRight Odyssey pads have a maybe 40% more heat transfer than Arctic Silver 5. I'm thinking pads might actually be better. I'm going to try it this weekend.

I just tried 0.5mm pads. The VRAM was down to 80 from 108, but the hot spot temp and GPU temps got up to 103 and 90, respectively. Redoing with just thermal paste and I'm down to normal gpu) hotspot temps but down to 90C on the VRAM. I'll try the pads again, though, as they should be better...

Dude you are an actual genius. I followed your instructions and put thermal paste on the area where those two stickers were. I did NOT change the thermal pads. Before: Memory temp = 102 degrees C with the side off by the window. After: Memory temp = 86 degrees C with the side on!!! Doing a nice steady 101 Mh/s. Thanks mate.

so only paste on the metal cooler part around the processor and on the processor (no pads)? Then replace pads on the other side so that the memory chips make contact with pads and the top metal plate? Why not show this process since people will probably pour too much paste on the metal? Also 94c VRAM with 100% fans hmmm. wouldn't that typically be just 6-10c more stock at that fan speed? Not trying to be entitled here but I was really looking forward to a detailed process video as to learn from your mistakes.

I didn't see any mention in your video about adjusting fan speed via the Alienware Command Center app - it took me a bit as the UI is terrible, but if you go to the temp tab (fan speed) and click just to the left of the offset on your current profile you can crank those fans up for when you are mining. Granted this makes the machine hella loud (new quieter fans on their way) but it did drop temps a bit more. Sorry if redundant or a "duh" moment, but squeezing out any additional temp reduction is always a good thing for mining. Great video by the way - I love your setup!

I bought my R11 a couple years ago and overall was happy with it. I wish I had seen your site then! This morning I got the dreaded pump fan not responding error code. The fan runs but I guess does not spin up to speed. I have a new fan ordered and while I have it apart I am going to add the second intake fan. This is the first time in about 25 years I bought a pre-built PC. When I built my own I got huge cases (I miss Fry's electronics) I still have a couple and I thought about transferring the R11 guts to the bigger case. One has a Thermaltake 1200 w PS. Lots of fans and lots of air flow. I will be checking out your other videos to see what I have been missing.

Yeah, these videos leave A LOT to be desired in the way of showing people what you actually did step-by-step.
I put pads on mine without paste. I used 1.0mm pads under the metal plate from the pcb/mem chips up to touch the metal plate. They honestly didn't look at thick as the stock ones to me, but my temps definitely went from 110 down to the 95-100c area while mining on 75% fans.
I put 0.5mm pads between the metal plate and the actual heatstink (where he took the stickers off and applied thermal paste).
I'm thinking maybe I should use thicker pads in both spots but I didn't want to risk pushing the heatsink too far off of the gpu core. I have seen others say they used paste too but I thought the gap was too large for paste? Maybe it's just me but I always thought pads were recommended for these larger gaps?
I didn't even use fancy pads just the cheap blue ones on amazon that were 6-7w/mk. I'm pretty sure the pads he bought had double the heat transfer capacity and should perform even better.

  • @dishsoap1

Ok everybody. Here’s what you do. I got my R12 yesterday. Tried mining, VRAM’s shot up to 106C and was throttling my speed to around 90MH. Not good. I took some of the info from this video, but did it differently. After I finished and plugged it back in, I am mining NiceHash, High optimization, VRAM at 90-92C. Very pleased. I used No additional thermal pads, just added paste to areas. Read below.....
So takeoff the back plate. Then unscrew the cooler from the PCB. Use this video to guide you what screws to remove. I completely separated it by unplugging both fan connectors. Clean off all the old paste from chip and cooler. Next, I removed the black aluminum piece from the PCB. I took the three screws out of the rear IO bracket and gently pried the two pieces apart. The thermal pads make them stick together. It will separate with minimal prying.
From there, I adjusted one thermal pad on the memory because it was applied crooked. I then for giggles, put some thermal paste on top of those pads to help with contact to the black aluminum plate. I then put the aluminum plate back on the PCB.
Next apply fresh thermal paste to the freshly cleaned Processor.
Now onto the cooler: Remove the stickers like in the video, use a little alcohol to get off sticker residue. Apply thin lines of thermal paste on all sides of cooler. The area where he mentioned in the video. (You will see where the memory chips are located when you remove the black aluminum plate and will then know where to put it.) Place the cooler on top of the GPU.
Backplate: I made a little channel in the middle of all of the thermal pads on the back plate. I filled the channels with thermal paste. After that, screw everything back together. Start in the middle for tightening and work your way out. Now your GPU is ready to fire up.
I fired up NiceHash, immediately got 100.50MH. No thermal throttling and my VRAM went from 106c to 90-92c. I replaced no pads, just added paste. Now I don’t know if the extra steps I took made a difference or if it mainly is just adding paste on the cooler, but I tried to be thorough. I’m glad I took off the black aluminum plate and saw the one crooked pad.
Maybe Gamers Heaven will do a walkthrough that visually shows what I did. Until then, message me here is you have questions. I’m very happy with the outcome and it only cost me thermal paste I already had in the house. Overall, it’s an easy job. Just go slow and take your time.
My fans were running 100% at first but they do eventually come down. Runs about 60% when the room is around 70 degrees. If room is hotter, fans will ramp up.

They will be here tomorrow. One confident user said 2mm for the 3090. Currently 108MHs @100C temp memory junction, 1300 OC on memory, -150 core. GPU temp @57C, power 80%, 270W fans 80%. Tried same settings but at 100% 349W power I get 106 MHs, memory junction temp 106C. Did not make a difference either with case cover open or closed. Praying for a miracle when I do this. You can't use pads because the core itself is then not making contact. The square in the middle that has paste from the factory, that's the GPU core. Really this extra paste is allowing the substantial cooler to more effectively take heat out of the memory in the same way it can remove heat from the core, which it's very good at.

I have the same card, I used thermal pads and it works. Dell OEM 3090 is special, it is hard to directly replace thermal pads for the 12 VRAMs on the front side, it's not easy to separate the PCB from the black plate. For other 3090 cards or 3080, you don't have to put thermal pads on heat sinks.
For Dell OEM 3090, the thickness of thermal pads depends on thickness of grease on the core, and how tight you squash and screw the two boards. you might have to try 1 or 2 times to get a satisfying result, in the best case, the VRAM temp drops without causing core temp's increase. but more often VRAM temp drops at the cost of core temp increase. in worst case, the pads are too thick, the core will be overheat immediately after booting your system, then you need to make the pads thinner. I don't recommend using grease on heat sink, it will flow away if the grease is too thick, it won't last long even if it worked in the video.

I was able to get the same, but marginally better results. Hitting just under 100 MH/s consistently, and the VRAM temps stay consistent at 90-92 and core clock at 50-52. I used the same thermal pads, but got the thicker 1.5mm ones and was a little more generous with making the pads bigger than the original ones. And of course generous amounts of thermal paste between those two heat sink plates around the core. The thermal pads under the backplate definitely do help, theyre a lot more conductive in heat than pockets of air. Otherwise same exact setup as yours with NiceHash.

ok dude excellent video... holy f! Wonder if you have any issues one you unscrewed everything in terms of removing the PCB board? I disassembled my Dell RTX 3070 (its pretty much the same design) but for some reason after removing all the pressure screw's after the back plate was removed I could not FOR the life of me remove the board to reveal the damn GPU / access to replace the thermal paste. Just wondering if I should pull this thing apart again and just pull harder ? I really did give it a good pry and it really seems to be stuck together... any chance that could just be the 2 year old paste fused together ? Any help or advise would be great , cheers.
edit: okay so I read a few comments how separation was "difficult" so I opened it back up and gave it a second try.. Dell used around 1cc of thermal paste and it had hardened into thermal glue after two years! took a million q tips and alchool to clean it all out.... wish me luck using artic silver 5! in a moderate amount along with adding some thermal pads like you did!

Also wondering if it's possible to add additional heatsinks to the card outside of the thermal pads and paste.
ALSO looking into adding gpu liquid cooling - ekwb? Has a pretty cool looking adder for the 3080, but I am unclear on if I can modify the stock AIO to add a gpu into the cooling loop, or if I'd need to get a whole second setup, which clearly there's no space for.
