I have been a Tarzan fan -films-books-collecting -for about 60 yrs now--Tarzan and his Mate is the best of all-today'a films do not have this degree of action/romance.
Watch Wolf Larson’s Tarzan! He rescues a man in fire wearing a loincloth. I think there’s also a scene where Tarzan has to rescue Jane so Wolf Larson vine swings into Jeep glass so hard he cracks the glass and saves Jane’s life.
This movie was the best of ALL of the Tarzan epics, even the rest in the Weismuller-O'Sullivan era. Johnny and Maureen were at the peak of their popularity here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too have been a Tarzan fan for as long as I can remember. It's so wonderful to see the shows that I grew up watching. Brings back such fond memories. I would even try the Tarzan yodel!
My mum absolutely adored Johnny Weissmuller and the Tarzan films. She went to see him put on a swimming show at Derby baths in Blackpool ,England when she was a girl . She still had pictures of him on the wall when she passed away , aged 84. So lovely and sweet xx
Weissmuller was one of the world's fastest swimmers in the 1920s, winning five Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo. He won fifty-two U.S. National Championships, set more than fifty world records (spread over both freestyle and backstroke),[3] and was purportedly undefeated in official competition for the entirety of his competitive career.
To date, no one has ever beaten Weissmuller's 'free-style' time...he is still the 'Fastest Man in the World' in the water. (some years ago, Mark Spitz was asked "Did you accomplish everything you wanted in Competition at the Olympics?" and he said "No...I was never able to beat Johnny's 'free-style' record! That's one thing that still bothers me, the one I wanted most!")***(size-for-size & height-for-height, there's still no one who has 'bested' him)
Then why does Spitz say "I couldn't break his free-style record in the Olympics". (he's said in the past hedid his best, but just couldn't exceed Johnny's speed) ???
Sorry...but I don't count Phelps as a 'Winner' in the Olympics...a 'win' by a hundredth of a second is completely meaningless! His freakishly long arms and fingers enabled a 'win', not his physical ability. As far as Spitz goes...if he beat Johnny, then he beat him! (I never bothered to 'look it up'...I just went with what Spitz said in some interview years ago...maybe 'Playboy?) The best way to find out is ask him on 'FB' or something...see if he ever said it.(if "Andre the Giant" got into a ring with the 'greatest heavy-weight Champions' of the last hundred-years,who would 'win' against him, provided Andre was 25 or so? Answer: NO ONE, not if any opponent ever got close enough to actually be hit! It wouldn't matter 'where' a punch from Andre landed...that guy would need a hospital in an instant) If Weissmuller were alive now and in his 20's and competed professionally, I have serious doubts that anyone could best him in 'free-style'...many who knew him in Hollywood said 'I watched him with my own eyes and he was so fast if you 'blinked' you'd miss him swimming the length of an 'Olympic' size pool* *Maureen O' Sullivan, Buster Keaton, Errol Flynn... all said the same thing. 'Keaton' was a superb athlete when young, and could actually 'walk' using only his fingertips ! (I think you're right! 'Johnny was likely the kind that won't 'do his best' unless he's losing)
Ah! So you know about Aaron's 'at-bat' record! GOOD! (don't forget Ruth was a 'HoF' 'lefty-pitcher' as well) Had Ted 'the Splendid Splinter' not been in WW2 and Korea...it's likely HE would be considered more of an 'Icon' than he already is! Weissmuller IS STILL the only "Tarzan"...just as Connery will always and forever be "Bond...James Bond". (as for Johnny's 'swim-scenes', the cameras of that era possessed very little in terms of 'speed-up' of speeds greater than 16 frames-per-second...special-effects could 'speed-up water-flow rates' but that completely defeat the purpose of 'making him look faster' etc. More 'fps' had to wait for better film quality of 35mm and then 64mm...but the '64mm film didn't exist during the "Tarzan" years) Johnny did most of his own 'stunts' himself, since he was better at it than most stuntmen! In a 'long-shot' of "Tarzan swinging on vine", the 'vine' itself was steady, while filming a 'scrolling background' with'Tarzan' in front of it, giving the illusion of 'depth and speed' followed by a 'close-shot' of him landing somewhere...but even that was dangerous swinging for several feet to gain speed and then hit the ground barefoot! (a good way to crack an ankle for a grown man!) Flynn's daughter Rory has said many times "I never saw my Dad drunk...he would nurse the same glass of scotch for hours, putting fresh ice in it!" Flynn knew from the time he was 15 that he had cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart) when he was diagnosed after passing-out from a swim-contest in Tasmania...he was told "You might have 20-years if you don't over-exert yourself from now on", so it's safe to assume he decided to live 'balls to the wall' from that point on, knowing he could die at any time with no warning.(in his last years, you see photos of his 'puffy' face & neck and assume it was 'booze' doing it, when in reality it was 'proof positive' of fluid edema from his failing heart and kidneys that were never being'flushed' properly) And of course, even one drink was too much because of his heart. My step-father looked EXACTLY like Flynn in terms of 'puffiness' in his 40's and he never drank a drop! It was 'congestive heart failure' doing it.
Yeah...I remember 'jerky motion' that was caused by 'frame-distortion'...the frames were 'not enough' per second to achieve continuity for a human eye (like 'flip-cards'...remember them?) so anything moving quickly appeared to be 'jerking' frame-to-frame. The "Battle of the Little Big Horn" is likely the most studied battle in human history because it was so recent and so unexpected...and all it achieved was to insure that every Tribe in America would be punished for it! (a lot of the cavalrymen shot themselves rather than be taken alive...and the Army still won't admit it! They knew what would happen if 'them Injuns git holt of us still alive' and did what I would do...why suffer if you don't have to? While it was very true that "Custer is a 'preening peacock' who 'never met a camera he didn't like'...he was also brilliant at fighting battles against 'long odds' with what he had available.(he knew full-well that Indians had no 'military discipline nor tactics' in fighting, just as he knew men on horseback w/carbines represented a very powerful force much greater than any 'fixed-positions' of an enemy..."Movement and Speed" were his 'credo' and he proved many times during the Civil War that tactic was effective. ("Custer" was well-read, and had studied every known battle in history and knew 'what works and what doesn't' in terms of fighting a more or less 'fixed-position' as well as 'how quickly can a group of men on-foot move in a given time?' )The one factor he wasn't aware of was the sheer size of the forces against him that 'pinned him in-place' and didn't allow him to withdraw once the numbers were realized...his men fought as best they could but the enemy forces were far too many, perhaps 'twenty-to-one' and they had no chance.
I have always loved these original Tarzan movies. Jane was beautiful and talented. Johnny was the ultimate Tarzan. Then boy came along with the chimp also. Loved the treehouse. Really a good tribute, makes me want to fire up the YES the VCR. Got all the Tarzan movies. And the Original Tarzan yell. Was always great to hear.
Let us also pay tribute to the animals that helped to make this film too, especially Cheetah, without them this film would have been impossible to make.
Johnny and maureen were the perfect tarzan jane couple .many years afterwards no other couple could compete with them .most people don't remember the names of other actors but Johnny weissmuller and maureen o'sullivan will stay forever in our hearts
deathkidrocks-Thanks for this upload. Amazing clips and good selection for music. I grew up watching Tarzan when fun and innocence would hold your attention and keep you coming back for more.
She was so pretty and spirited, funny too. However, they dyed her red hair black, and lots of white make up to cover her freckles. I think this may have been movie where they filmed Jane swimming naked, underwater shots. Somehow I doubt it was Maureen O'Sullivan. They thought nothing of it. But that started an uproar, and started the Hollywood filming "Standards". So the nude swimming scene was not included in the movie, I believe. But still it was quite "racy" for 1934. She was showing alot of skin.
Made a few GIFS from this video & they'll be available through Fb & twitter very soon. Johnny Weissmuller the best ever Tarzan. Maureen o 'Sullivan beautiful, Irish girl .. amazing to see such a skimpy outfit in those days, must've cause a big scandal. Also blew my mind that Maureen o'Sullivan is Mia Farrow's mum .. & that she was a class-mate of Vivien Leigh (Gone With the Wind/ Streetcar Named Desire).
One day while going through old photo 's i came across one from the 40 's of my Mother - She could of been Jane ( Maureen O' Sullivan 's ) Twin Sister . What beautiful Ladies they both Were ~

3:23 Is there a scene in any of the Tarzan films were these two get "married"? Johnny Weismuller the Greatest Tarzan of all time.
😊
🎯💯
Agreed
People don't need to much to be happy , soulmate and basic things , that's all that we need , unfortunately , we forgot about that.
O'Sullivan is the most delightful Jane of them all. She lights up every scene she appears in. The perfect mate to Weissmuller's Tarzan.
You said it - gorgeous, funny and a smile that makes your heart melt. And dressed as she was in these pre-Code films, hotter than chili peppers!
While not true to the ERB novels, still the greatest Tarzan movies ever made. Grew up watching them every weekend.
Brings tears to my eyes
Shows how a man and woman can be strong and independent, yet still belong to one another.
Amazing tribute's clip.They are loved Forever ❤❤
All the Tarzan films with Johnny and Maureen are really lovely and romantic!
Gotta love Pre-code movies! Maureen O Sullivan was such a beauty.
great movie, Great actor Johnny Weissmuller
It's beautiful. A wonderful movie.
She did an amazing job at covering her Irish accent
They were the best. No one could replace their interpretations of the characters.

Wonderful done. Thank you.
My favorite Film-Love-Pair in Film. As a child I allways wanted to like Johnny - and handle a partnership like Tarzan and Jane...
deathkidrocks-Thanks for this upload. Amazing clips and good selection for music. I grew up watching Tarzan when fun and innocence would hold your attention and keep you coming back for more.
Both beautiful people. Loved their onscreen chemistry. I can see Mias face in her mother and Ronan in grandmother.
Maureen O Sullivan was the best at being Jane nobody could play the part like this lady always done so.
She was so pretty and spirited, funny too. However, they dyed her red hair black, and lots of white make up to cover her freckles. I agree. Maureen O'Sullivan is best Jane there was or ever could be.
That wasn't Maureen O' Sullivan in the underwater shots. She was scared of diving under water.
Maureen and Johnny were the best together and always will be.
