Great video. Just changed the water pump (housing, gaskets, impeller, etc). Old impeller was not pliable anymore. Was trying slide the lower back into position but jammed up at the last inch before getting dark out. Guess I'll try turning the engine tomorrow. Hope that helps it slip on. Thanks
All I needed to know was which way to turn the shaft while putting the water pump housing back on, bad you answered that. It's been several years since I have done this, and this one is for my dad so trying to make sure it's right, last thing I need is for him to get out on the water and then have problems. Thanks a lot brother. Wonderful video. Thank you for taking time to make the video to help us out
Sorry I do not have a part number for the kit but you can purchase parts individually at www.marineengine.com They also have complete pump replacement kits but you need to look up your specific model number to get the correct kit.
I've got the same motor i'm currently waiting on the impeller rebuild kit to arrive but, before i took off the lower unit I only .had forward. no reverse or neutral. my first boat, any ideas? I am at my wits end with this thing
Dakota Bartlett ....is this motor a hydroelectric shift? If so, the motor must be spinning at 250 rpm or more in order for the hydraulic pump to work. You must have your battery connected to supply 12 volts to the solenoids inside the lower unit. If your battery is connected make sure the blade connectors are connected. Email me at livetofishoutboardrepair@gmail.com if you want to contact me with more questions or would like help in diagnosing your problem.
My old 1959 14ft boat is rated for a 40HP. I put a 1985 Merc 50 on which I would have thought was lighter. Suprised to me it is 220 lbs vs a 1959 40HP estimated weight of 140 lbs. I would think older were bigger and heavier but not the case

@tobysirus4996….. Yes you are correct. You can find this part at www.marineengine.com it’s PN: 28-56662. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience. Also thanks for the 100 👍
I have the 1988 motor, and currently replacing the shift shaft linkage. When I got the motor the shift shaft was broken. I'm looking for a picture showing how the top portion of the shaft hooks up to the proper places. Is it possible to get a picture from you? Or a video? Thanks!
Jacob Miller ... I just did a video where I had to pull the power head off of a 50 hp Mercury. The shift shaft is shown in the video coming out with the power head. This is the only video I have showing the upper portion of the shift shaft but it connects to a bracket secured by two bolts fastened to the underside of the power head. You would most likely need to pull the power head off to access these two bolts. ruclips.net/video/OnWXUnvqJt4/видео.html
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Thanks, watched the video and did some research on the different motors. Looks like the 45hp Mercury has a different shaft design...
Hi, just wondering if this model 35 hp Mercury 2 stroke has a thermostat? Mine doesn't and it's a late 80's model. I know they were removed from these early 80's Mercs due to issues. Thanks, Paul
Paul Williams… If you look for your Model at www.marineengine.com you will find diagrams of the motor as well as part numbers. I believe It would be under the heading “crankcase & Thermostat” for this motor but it only shows a relief valve under the coil bracket. Good luck with your project.
Yes it’s doable but would be expensive. Look up your motor on www.marineengine.com and you will find most if not all the associated components for the electric start, wiring harness, rectifier etc. You might also need the throttle control box w/ key or at least a push button start wiring harness and starter bracket assembly.
So did it run faster? I have same 35hp less the tilt and trim. Will push my 16ft Lund Pike 27mph up the Missouri river and 32mph down the river. And a flat 30mph on a lake.
Kenny Deines … if you look your model/serial number up on www.marineengine.com you can find a complete parts breakdown and they will provide an extensive parts list as well. www.crowleymarine.com also has very detailed parts diagrams for identifying what you need.
What was that piece that you didn’t know about? That one you needed to do research on what it was. 2:10 mark on your video. That piece melted in our engine. And I’m guessing it needs replacement
I bought a 1987 mercury 35hp not to long ago. I Have started it a few times and noticed that it doesn't have any stream of water shooting out anywhere. Is it supposed to be like that? Or does the tell tail need to be fixed or replaced?
Sounds like your water pump impeller needs replaced or your telltale hose is plugged. How old is the water pump impeller? If it’s over 2 years then it needs replaced and could break apart and end up inside the cooling passages blocking the water flow. Use a wire or pick and stick it up inside the telltale hose and see if you can restore the stream if not you need to drop the lower unit and inspect the impeller and change it while your in there.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair OK I replaced the impeller with a new impeller kit . And cleared the tell tell tube but my water pump isn't engaging . I get no water coming out still. I am running in a trash can to ensure the water is above the water pump but still nothing. Any idea what can be causing this issue. Thanks for your input
@mike Garcia did you try compressed air up the water tube or reversed through the telltale making sure the water passage is clear. Try connecting a water hose backflushing it through the water tube. It may be possible you have old impeller particles stuck inside the powerhead. You would need to remove the water jacket cover plate to inspect the water passages. Could also have impeller PCs stuck inside behind the exhaust plate. Finally if that is clear then you might have a blockage under the power head. See my 6 part video series on this issue: ruclips.net/video/OnWXUnvqJt4/видео.html
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair yes sir I ran a water hose thru it and it started out just fine . I will check your video out and see if there's any particles blocking the passage. The impeller it had was shot so that may be the problem. Thank you for your help sir. I most definitely appreciate it.
jimmy caradine … I would replace the entire pump. You might have some distortion in the pump or plate that may be causing the impeller to catch on a sharp edge. You should also apply a light amount of grease or even dish soap when you install the impeller.
I made sure to put it in first. Put some grease on at both ends this will help the tube stay in place up on the power head and slide into the water pump easier.
Do you put it in forward, reverse, or neutral before removing the lower unit? Last time I left it in neutral and could not get it to line back up. Thanks!
Hi there, I got an exact same engine as in your vid. But as no water came out the tell tale I figured I would had to change the impellor( last service appeared to be 2014) unfortunately it is a real struggle to get the lower unit off. Some say it's a stuck drive pin in the engine, but I did manage to crack it for about a 1/4". Some say it is not a stuck drive pin but something else. Any adea if something got stuck in the gearshif linkage?
It’s most likely the drive shaft is stuck up in the crankshaft from old hard grease. In a worst case scenario it takes destroying the lower unit to get it off with wedges and a hammer. Some people have used PB blaster while hanging the motor upside down letting gravity do the work. Just make sure the motor doesn’t have a shift shaft coupler or clamp holding it together. Some motors have one under the power head. It just depends on the model you have. Try to find a Service Manual or at least look up your model on a parts drawing to determine how the shift shaft is configured.
A buddy of mine replaced his water pump on this same motor, after that it won't rev past 2500 rpm fwd and rev while in the lake. On the muffs in it will rev past that rpm. Any ideas?
I have that same motor and rebuilt the water pump but it still will not pee. I took it apart to check what I had done but nothing seam wrong. What else can I do?
James Baucom …. If your sure you connected the water pump into the water tube into the power head correctly… then try cleaning out the telltale hole with a wire. If that doesn’t work check the poppet valve (if it has one) and make sure it’s working properly.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I pulled the shaft to get the impeller key to stay in place. Will the manual show how to get it back to normal? Could you do a video similar to my motor? Thank you sir for everything so far.

Your 1959 40 hp was actually probably more like a 35 hp since the hp was rated at the engine not the prop back then.
