    Having a working dog vs keeping a dog in a backyard, chained up, with no shelter, interaction with humans, especially the "owner", are two VERY different things. And there is nothing wrong with having a working dog who spends a lot of time outdoors. People need to understand the difference.

    • @helenemalenfant5435
      @helenemalenfant5435 Год назад +162

      Exactly. Thank you for making this critical distinction. Some breeds are predisposed to ‘work’ and to be challenged. After Babe so many people got border collies and it was a disaster for so many dogs. They are smart and active and can become neurotic and destructive if just left alone for hours a day in a family with both adults working long hours and not prepared to put in the time they need to adequately engage their minds and bodies, just as one example.

    We had a farmdog when I was a child, a German shepherd mix, who was guarding the farm and protecting us. We didn't have to train him at all, he went by instinct to do the job and he did it a 100%. Other things like "sit, leave it", walking next to us on a leash , where he was allowed or not allowed to go - we just sort of showed him once, and he remembered it forever. My father gave him baths but he never went to a groomer. He was taken to the vet when he needed to, mainly for check ups, I only remember a couple of ear infections on top of that. He was not a bit overweight as he was running around all day. He was dirty but he didn't smell bad. He ate big portions of food, but we never gave him treats. He was very calm and affectionate with us, but he was mainly attached to my Dad.

My favourite example of this was when we were out for a walk and he gave chase to a rabbit, normally he fails to catch them and they dive into their burrows. This time was different however, he managed to catch up to it, ran into it, the rabbit flipped and kicked booping him on the nose, this proved too violent for Max who came running back to me to hide behind me from the nasty rabbit.

He wasn't abused or neglected, he was loved and allowed to do what he loved doing, which was protecting his property.

    Their coats are so insulating that the weather only bothers them when it's hot. Then they dig holes under various bird buildings so they can be out of the sun and in nice cool ground to sleep.

He said the dogs only came inside when it was too cold outside, and even then, they stayed in the foyer or mud room. Great-grandma wouldn't let them in the house proper. I have a dog (a cattle herding breed at that) and a cat and they're both pampered little indoor critters who are spoiled rotten. I live in the country on a dirt road. Growing up we had a Rottweiler who HATED being indoors!! uhm people would always come over and say how dirty he was, or we were horrible people for leaving him outside when it was raining.....and everything else under the sun!
    1.) He loved to stay outside! he had a big dog house and constant food and water available. In the winter we had a heating lamp in the dog house along with a heated water bowl. He could come inside at anytime! But nope he would rather lay in the yard covered in snow during the winter! 😂
    2.) We bathed him and checked for ticks once a month. If it had be raining or snowing and he was wet than we made sure to dry him before nightfall. Yes if you went to pat his butt, dust would fly into the air. We lived on a dirt road. It's inevitable! He was happy and healthy. Loved belly rubs!! He actually came into our lives because someone dumped him in our yard. He was skin and bones. He was a full grown adult and was MAYBE about 50lbs. If that! 😢 you could literally see his heart beating through the skin whenever he would stretch out. So sad! He also had an improperly docked tail that was infected severely!
    The moment we gave him food for the first time he just absolutely fell in love with us! I was maybe 10 years old when we rescued him. He passed of old age when i was 26. He had a loooong happy life!! His name was buddy. By the time he passed he was a whopping 160lbs of pure muscle (and some fat) hehe he got a lil pudgy because he couldn't run like he used to. But man did that boi have some muscle! And he could run like no other!! Delivery drivers and such were TERRIFIED of him!! But it's funny bc he never barked at strangers. He was so excited to meet a new friend who would scratch his butt and never stop! 😂❤ i miss that ole boy! 😢 it's been 3 years since his passing.

      Thank you for your wonderful story! Our doberman was a terrific guard dog and a loved member of our family. He died 5 months ago, leaving a massive hole. Delivery drivers were terrified of him, too!

    I agree 100%. Most working dogs are happiest doing what they are bred to do, work. They would much rather be dirty and outside than be inside on a couch. I’m a pet sitter so I see people humanizing their dogs all the time.

    He's magnificent. I hope there's a longer video version. I'd have loved to see their owners reaction to having their working dog look like a show dog! : ) I'm sure it lasted all of 5 minutes when they got home. LOL

    I grew up on a small farm and we had dogs. One was a small "house dog" even though she was allowed outside during the day. The others were outside dogs, and they roamed all over our acreage all day. They slept in the barn or on the porch at night, except when they were old and then they were allowed to sleep in the house or in a heated dog house. They were happy and healthy and lived long lives.

    So true! as long as the dog is happy and healthy it's all that matters. It's nice to get a makeover though :)
