Restoration of Vintage 1969 Omega Seamaster

- Today we are restoring a vintage Omega Seamaster 1969. This watch was found in a drawer of a retired jeweler.
The watch shows signs of heavy wear and the gold plated case, bracelet and clasp are heavily scratched. It has not been used for the last 20 years.
The watch is equipped with a rare movement calibre Omega 565. Replacement parts are rare and expensive.
It is not running properly, so we will try to restore it to near original condition and give it a second life.

I appreciate watchmakers who will go so far as to even polish and restore the case and bracelet. I've noticed that many just service the inside and not the outside. I think both matter. Maybe the owner of a watch doesn't care, but I think it's just as important as the movement. Thank you!!!
I think like you! Watch case must be cleared and serviced like the movement itself. A lot of people don’t like… because of the “history” of the watch 🫣

I have a similar vintage Omega with 7 bead bracelet, a bit earlier - around 1964 or 1965 I think, I bought it new. It has Geneve on the dial and a Seamaster back but has no date complication. I stopped wearing it about 25 years ago after it had been all around the World with me several times. In my ignorance I even took it scuba diving a few times in Fiji to depths of 100ft with no problem. I'm going to get the back taken off to have a look at it, it has only been serviced once, way back, when I can't remember - maybe around 1985? Lovely watches, and as usual you treat today's example with the skill and reverence it deserves. Subscribed.

@@MagicWatchmaking Thank you for your comment. The back was taken off so I could see the beautiful mechanism. A true wonder of the craftsman's art. I put it on a Timegrapher and it still keeps time amazingly accurately.

I’m lucky enough to own a 1967 Seamaster 600. With date, so it’s the 613 movement. Can’t tell you how delighted I am. Fully serviced: but not polished quite as well as you do. Authenticity, maybe. I would have preferred polishing. I find the cleaning and polishing the most fun part of the watch videos, and you did not disappoint! ❤

Fascinating. I recently came upon a similar Omega in similar condition. I contacted Omega about a full service and dial restoration and wanted to understand more about what they would be likely to do. Now I can see why the price (including sending it back to Switzerland from Australia) is so high. So much involved, but what a result!! Gorgeous. And I agree the calm simplicity of your video production is very soothing to watch!

great vid bro, quick uestion what did u use for the barrel in term of grease/oil
The barrel walls for automatic movements a use Kluber P125. For the barrel arbor and mainspring I use Moebius HP1300

I noticed that you had the lift angle at 52 degrees for this 565 movement.
How much does the lift angle matter when using a timegrapher?
Thank you for the support, what a great question! The correct angle for this movement is 49 degrees. One degree lift angle increases the amplitude reading by 5 degrees. In my humble opinion it does not matter very much.

Actually, I was aware of the proper lift angle being 49 degrees; however, I wanted to be as polite and respectful as possible in asking the question. After all, you are the watchmaker, not I.
Anyway, someone at a watchmaker’s shop recently put my 565 movement (1968 166010) on a timegrapher and left it at 52 degrees while checking it out. Now I know why. So, if the lift angle is increased by one degree, amplitude increases by 5 degrees. Got it.

I own a 1968 Sparkle cal 750. I would like to see it restored like this. I am assuming it is a significant investment. Are the seals and O rings still available?
I also own a 1974 Tudor Prince Oysterdate that could use a go through.

Well done! I must ask...you indicated the movement had become magnetic. I saw no remedy for that, only a compass point test. Was the solution purposely left out?
Demagnetizing is the solution. I demagnetize the movement.

Demagnetizing is a default process during service. The device are available in different types. Very simple or very sophisticated.
What type of oil do you use for jewels. I'm now starting to restore watches and I need to know more about oils (where to use them, which one should I be using depending wether it is a jewel, the mainspring, the crown or the setting-lever mechanism and stuff, etc). Could you please recommend me what type of oil should I use on the different parts? Thank you!!
Hi Eric! I use the oils from Moebius. Their website is very informative and tells you exactly which oil should be used for each part :)

My father, RIP, used to wear a Seamaster, it's not working anymore and the face looks damaged... would it be possible to fix it?

@@pjsimpkins7624 This process has to be done very carefully. It needs a lot of experience! Or you take the gold plating down and replete it again
And I thought neurosurgery was complicated. There are more ways to kill a watch than to kill a patient in the average procedure, compared to what goes on here. So many tools, so many small parts, so much to understand and remember, so many delicate operations to master.
