  • Marketplace commissioned lab tests on popular brands of rice cereals and snacks to test for levels of arsenic, a chemical that can be especially harmful for babies and children. We investigate which brands and varieties of rice are more likely to contain arsenic.

@Alexandra - Don't get too self-satisfied and complacent about this. In much of Asia some (many???) farmers use substantially more pesticides on their crops than do even farmers in the USA's industrial agriculture system. No government agency in the couple of Asian countries where I've lived seems to be monitoring and enforcing pesticide use regulations. Admittedly, my statement is based on anecdotal evidence from media stories about agricultural chemical sales practices in Asia. Some pesticide manufacturers are responsible in educating farmers about the proper levels of pesticide use. Unfortunately, others are not. Instead, the distributors will push uninformed local farmers into buying and using more pesticides and hazardous chemicals on their crops, including rice. Then, those over treated crops get mixed in with everything else after being harvested and combined in coops and market consolidators.
Although many of the chemicals allowed in US industrial food chains are banned in other western countries, particularly Europe, few Asian countries have such standards and those that do have standards controlling the presence of harmful chemicals don't seem to do much to enforce the standards.

A sizable portion of Canadian conservatives really dislike CBC. Personally I'd gladly pay double in whatever comes out of my taxes to fund CBC. There needs to be news agencies that aren't beholden to their advertisers. Yes CBC is biased to whichever government agencies support their funding, but you need something to balance out Fox, Bartbreit, Rebel News which are biased towards industry/private enterprise. Both are needed. Fox, Bartbreit & Rebel News are needed to hold government agencies feet to the fire.

Also, most of the brown rice sold is rancid: if it smells sharp and sour, it's rancid. Most grocery stores don't have the faintest idea about this. They'll say, oh, that's the way brown rice smells. Nope. That's the way rancid brown rice smells. It's rancid because brown rice has oil that oxidizes if it's not kept in the fridge.

Europe suffered the scars of industry in the eighteenth century. Two world wars pressed the reset button on how things were made and provided the opportunity to reinvent. The American, including Canada simply exported the manufacturing to Asia, now being scarred. The Asians do understand the consequences. . China's conversion to electric cars is a huge step though the use of rare lithium and various rare earth metals may simply turn out to be a new chapter in the planet's demise. Ken Bowd

There’s over regulation in Europe. That’s one of the many reasons why Brexit is happening. Over regulation makes things more expensive and may be considered too much government intervention for a free market. There’s more regulation in Canada compared to the US, where most stuff are imported from.

it's very simple: rice from India and Thailand is low in arsenic, rice from the southern United States (,the cotton belt) is high in arsenic because they used arsenic based pesticides on the cotton crop that used to be planted there, now rice is grown on that land, that's why USA grown rice is high in arsenic.

If I understand this correctly we have high levels of arsenic in our rice because we (Canada Food Standards) don't have legal acceptable limits set or posted as standards. If I was a rice grower somewhere in the world and had a crop with higher levels than the EU or US would accept I would send it all to Canada. The fact that we don't have limits is unfathomable, if the UK tested and set their limit at 100 I would immediately do the same - I can always tweak it later if necessary. If you have no limit you end up with the situation we are in now ... how could we expect any different??

Why stop at only testing for Arsenic? There's a whole range of other heavy metals that are usually tested when it comes to processed foods.
I'm wondering why is there so much arsenic, is it because of the growing region? Some rivers could have industrial areas upstream and all the agricultural areas downstream.
What are the arsenic levels for rice imported from different areas of the world?

Being an old man, I have listened to this sort of show for most of my life - proving nothing changed to stop such reckless behavior. Actually I remember, or at least think I remember the CBC doing a ground breaking investigation on the quality of the air people breath. It was when TVs were blank and white, the city was, again, I think New York. Some will say "why didn't you google it?".
The answer is simple-we did not really care then, easily verified by the fact the whole planet is now in the same boat, Science can find man made chemicals anywhere on the planet Arctic to Antarctic.
Still we do not control the dumping of persistent chemicals.
ODDLY, if I have misnamed the black and white TV show or credited it to the wrong network, hundreds will speak out, commenting to correct me.
If only we could correct our behaviour so easy.
It was noteworthy how the parents reacted to the nail samples, told the truth about personal levels of arsenic, most fell deep into thought.
Thankyou CBC, still delivering quaulity after a lifetime.

I am always thinking bring up fact without the context is just as, if not more misleading than a lie or misinformation.
    1. Arsenic does exist naturally in human body at a very low concentration.
    2. Although rice also contains trace amount of arsenic, the quantity requires to consume that can lead to increase the arsenic level in human body will be unrealistic high. As baby has lower body volume. The higher concentration can be understood which should not be alarmed right the way.
I hope CBC at least present these information to the parents before they conducted and reported those test results. May be not...who knows.

One thing I know: Arsenic is bad when you've taken it and die from poisoning in a short period of time. That's the bad amount of arsenic.
The heck, I'm Asian. I'm 97% white rice, and I'll probably die first of eating a lot of grilled pork belly before arsenic gets me at... 95 years old? I love The Marketplace. but this looks like way too much like a straw man, an unnecessary scare. The experts you called in didn't say exact symptoms of arsenic poisoning in children, they're only saying "less arsenic, good". Sounds like hippie science to me.

Many are not necessarily safe as we might think; arsenic levels are not mentioned at all on the finish product. Basically it's 90%

And why are these Big international brands push those as being safest brands for babies out there.. who people would think Employ Nutritionist; safety FDA rules, follow strict and contingent sourcing of ingredients free of toxic and harmful chemicals.... ! That's why they charge AUD$4, for a small packet of 70g of Organic rice cake. While 1kg if Rice would cost approximately the same price? Ridiculous right? The reality is cereal for babies is not a good idea for many reasons, it's main use is a filler not a meal. The fact is, if you child's digestive system is ready to handle solid foods, you should be giving them real foods, not processed crap.
