- A complete playthrough of Sega's 2000 Sega Dreamcast game, Shenmue.
This playthrough was recorded from a launch-model Dreamcast via the composite connectors. The entire game is shown - the only edits that removed material from the recording are obvious when you see them - there were about three days where I had Ryo do nothing but stand in place so that I could show Christmastime before the game ended. All of the small things, like training, shopping, gaming, and gambling are included, so by all means feel free to skip them if you are only interested in the core story.

For anyone that wants to see what unadorned Japanese life looks like (at least in the 80s), this is a pretty fair portrayal of it. The culturalisms (even through the dub) come through well, as does the general feel of the buildings, furnishings, and things like that. It certainly provides a perspective that most media doesn't bother with.
I adored this game when it first was released. It's another of the DC games that I bought the day it launched and never once regretted it. It seemed only appropriate with the recent announcement of Shenmue III to revisit this.

Used to watch my big brother play this back in the day. His favorite game of all times. His name was Faizal Coto. He was a fire fighter and he also did rap music. Called himself Faiya. His life was taken In a road rage incident back in 2018. And now his name is on a street sign by his old fire house on west 8st in coney island. I watch this for him and in honor of him. Love you Faizy. Youre the king.

My best friend of 17 years gave this to me when we were kids and he told me that it reminded him of me because my father died.
I tried to give it a chance a few times but was always more into action games. Now as an adult I am finally giving it a real shot and I got to say that I absolutely love it.
Although I do wish the controls were better for walking around like to use the analog stick for 360-degree movement
Actually watched all 19 hours, only took me over a week. I really liked how you tried to include all the conversations and things to do in Shenmue. Patience and attention to detail, you possess. Been wanting this game and a Dreamcast for so long... I shall remedy that. Funny touch in the end, trying to use dial up. lol!

NintendoComplete Luckily Shenmue wasn't the only Dreamcast title I've got to play (it helped to have a friend that worked in a Mom n Pop video game store back in the late 90s, early 2000s)in my lifetime. But yea Shenmue is reason enough to own a Dreamcast.
Btw, I meant to commend you for including the training parts in your vid. I've noticed a lot of other longplays of this, they edit them out. I think it enriches the overall story. I hope you include these in your inevitable Shenmue II vid. Thank you. Btw my name is Alex, also. ☺

I usually play through this game once a year around November or December. Amazing experience. The first time I played this back in November of 2000, I was blown away. The graphics, music, attention to detail. All top notch.
As boring as it sounds, I used to enjoy watching my best friend play this game. It was very relaxing to me at the time.
Last year was my first time. Played it on DC. It's not normally the genre of games I'm into but I really felt immersed in the game. It felt like reading a good book. I'm playing 2 now. I can totally see myself going back and playing them both.

Played this when it came out when I was 11 years old. Fell in love with this game and dreamed about going to Japan. Now im 35 and currently in Hokone visiting Japan for the first time in my life. For “1986” I still see the stuff that was inspired me to come here. Narrow streets, polite people, vending machines everywhere, arcades and toy capsule stores. Time flies and thankful for all the memories!
I appreciate people with the same patience as me, lol. This video is great, and it's nice to experience (as someone who will probably not have a chance to play this came on my own any time soon).

I remember this game !! I loved it on the dreamcast back in 2000. I remember not liking the game at first, but I got a little older and started understanding everything. NOSTALGIA!!!! The first fight was so cool. This revolutionized these types of games. I wish I would have continued playing this game. If I remember corrrectly, I couldn't save the game. so i had to keep it on pause, eventually I had to shut it off or something and I lost all progress :(.... maybe I can play this game again with emulator

I know this RUclipsr literally made a 100% walkthrough of Shenmue 1. However, hear me out! The nameplate is so transparent with the white attached to it that you can barely even see it making it a real pain in the ass to play a game of Where's Waldo? at a time like this when the main protagonist is looking for the murderer of his father.
38:34 For those struggling with An elderly lady's looking for the Yamamoto house in Sakuragaoka, literally turn Ryo Hazuki around and keep going straight until he finds and looks at a white brick wall with Yamamoto's nameplate tagged on it and a fence entrance attached to it. The park is even near the house too, so as soon as you find it, make the first right away from the house in front of the parked yellow car and enter the park to find the elder lady sitting on a swing. She'll thank you and that's pretty much it. You're welcome!

Quite literally completed this game the first time today. The remastered version on Steam. Pretty interesting game. Onto playing Shenmue 2 now. Some say Shenmue 2 is the best out of the series.
Shenmue 2 is brilliant, takes everything about the first one and turns it up a notch. The first one will always be special to me and to everyone in the comments as well apparently. So many amazing memories tied up with this game and the way its made, the music, pacing, the story... its as if it was made to be a nostalgic inducing masterpiece, whereas number 2 is probably a better "game", but to me, you will never beat wandering the streets of Yamanose. I was 11 when this game came out, ill never forget it made me feel, the music takes me right back.

Who else is watching this to jog their memory before they buy Shenmue 3. Shenmue 3 looks 5x better than I thought it would. Looks fairly modern but still has the old school charm to it.
This came almost 5 years prior to GTA: SA and seem to have better graphics.

Shenmue 1 and 2 were such masterpieces... Shame about Shenmue 3.
Shenmue III was definitely a step backward. It was decent, but overall, I was disappointed. What were they thinking with that stupid hunger mechanic?!

Wow my long play has nothing on yours good on you man. The rendering must of taken over 1 day or so. THe uploading probably did over 2, my guess even at 480p. My upload took ages Shenmue 2 took 12 hours to upload
Thanks :) The rough part was that my original encode was 720p60 and RUclips rejected it based on length, but it would allow the whole thing in one part at 480p. In order to not have to break it up I had to reencode and upload it again. Grr lol. At least the 480p was only a fraction of the size.
Do you have the orginal file? try it again. I have sent 55gb files to RUclips and had them approved. RUclips heavily compresses videos and mine look alot worse upon being uploaded.
What I did as a safe guard was upload seperate disks then the whole game. I was going to do a mega video with both Shenmue 1 & 2 but I decided not to. I am currently editing Shenmue 2 for Xbox. Then when the HD collection comes out I'll do that.
Once the videos is edited together and I have removed alot of footage I then will add all the fancv graphics/sound effects/ greenscreening but I keep that only for the intro/outro.

The audio in this recording is only coming out of the left channel for me, the right channel is entirely missing. This seems to be one of the few actual legit videos of this running on a real console and not a emulator. Videos I find of Shenmue running on a emulator have absolutely trashy audio quality. So I'm kinda sad this video isn't in proper stereo.

No, I recorded and encoded the file in stereo. That's really odd. I could've sworn it did play in stereo, I'm sure I checked it when I uploaded it. I'll check it out when I'm not on my phone to see what's up. Are you sure that you have the stereo balance in your volume panel centered?
Nevermind, I just checked it. Apparently at some point it became a mono file. I just looked at the settings that were saved rendering this file in Vegas, it did have a full stereo track and was encoded to keep it. I don't know what happened :/ It wasn't like that when I first uploaded it. Sorry about that!
I think a lot of the poor quality audio on emulators would come from using a rip of the original disc. It would sound just as bad on the real console with a rip. The discs max out the Dreamcast's 1gb disc capacity, and most downloadable copies have had the audio badly recompressed to fit everything onto a 700mb cd
+NintendoComplete This sounds fine because I'm not running a copy, I have the original discs. I have the real discs for the DC version of Shenmue 2 as well that I'm playing through at the moment. Hopefully I'll have that finished and ready to upload in the near future :)
+NintendoComplete Nah the bad audio quality is nothing to do with a disc image. It's to due with the fact the audio emulation of the Dreamcast's AICA chip is rather poor, especially of the DSP chip the audio system uses to generate effects.
Also thanks for the response, it's no problem though as I have a special extension cable for my earbuds that has a switch to combine stereo into mono so I can watch your playthrough without loosing my mind.

@@NintendoComplete Wow, this game has so much potential. I'm playing it right now in my PC using RetroArch alongside DC Reicast. I'm taking my time to speak to every NPC and admire the attention to detail in this game. I'm 34 years old now. I remember the release of the DC fondly. I own 2 DCs and many games. I ripped Shenmue into my PC to save the life of my GDROM. I even ordered a USB-GDROM so that I can play in the actual console and, save my GDROM at the same time. Thanks for this playthrough. Are you also uploading Shenmue II anytime soon?
I love this video, but I wish the player blocked attacks in fights. Just push Y with no direction and you dodge/deflect attacks.

I would not recommend people to watch more so than play it if you can be lucky enough to grab a copy somewhere. otherwise watch this video. it's the closest you get to the real thing because it's not cut. this is actual gameplay. everything there from waiting until the day ends to just all of the amazing game in one. props to you for uploading it and giving those who don't have a chance to play to at least watch the story.

I've never played or watched or know anything about this game other than it's really good and everyone recommends it. I'm 45 minutes in and all I can think is how the soundtrack sounds like that one generic ringtone. The one that kind of sounds like steel drums?
