THIS VIDEO IS PERFECT FOR ME! I love chemistry and I love the beauty world! I’m currently getting my BS in chemistry and I’m wondering how to become a cosmetic chemist after!
Hows the degree? Is it hard?
Marina B it’s challenging! I spend a lot of time studying!
@@olgab478 I can agree with Jalyn my major is chemistry and I want to become a cosmetic chemist as well!

So what to do after getting your degree in chemistry
girl you is so pretty !!!
Thank you
I am so grateful for this video, thank you! I am literally going thru the same situation as you did. I got my degree in Biology in hope of becoming an Optometrist, but I realized I was more inspired by the money than the actual job itself. I found that my passion is beauty, science and creativity. Thanks to you I feel much more confident that this career path is achievable for me. ❤💙💚💛🧡
this comment really warmed my heart! you're very welcome luv. Hang in there it'll get better I promise.
I never knew so many people shared my life
Same experience! I was pursuing Optometry, until I got a part time job at an Optometry office, and realized it's like 30% helping patients and 70% sales. I have a B.S in biology, but am now in the clinical research field, much more fulfilling :)
I love your path! It aligns so much with that of our founder, Phylicia. Another tip is to become a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. This will allow you to network with other cosmetic chemists in the industry to help you get a foot in the door!
I'm on my 3rd year in BS Chem and this is a big help for me as an aspiring cosmetics chemist. Thank you so much!!
You're so welcome! comments like yours is the reason why I do this :)
Thank you! I was feeling horrible, after watching a video on why chemistry is a horrible degree. Few questions..
Can you do a video on your detailed work life? Like what exactly you do everyday.
What happened with Pham?
What do you wear to work? Can you wear your Afro like that?
What skills did you use from school the most?
What is the average work hours?
How can we start getting experience while in school?
Again thank you! And if you let, can we add you on LinkedIn? It made me happy to see a strong black women as a chemist! ❤️❤️
Hi Karlene,
First off how cool is your comment. Definitely made me feel even better about what I do. I will answer your questions in order to the best of my ability :-)
1. Yes I plan to do this in the near future so be on the look out.
2. I also plan to make a video on this; but to give a short summary 'it just never felt right to me in my gut, and equally didn't match my lifestyle, or where I saw myself in the future.'
3. I wear an assigned work uniform, and yes absolutely! I can wear my Afro to work but I but it really doesn't matter, as I wear a safety hair net as soon as I get to work so I never get to show my hair.
4. I use all the mathematical skills I learned in school. As well as basic chemistry knowledge like how viscosity, specific gravity, molecular weights, and organic properties of certain elements.
5. I work regular full time hours = 40 hrs/week.
6. Try to do as many internships paid/unpaid in any cosmetics lab in your area, that way you can get a feel for what it would be like to work in that field before fully committing after graduation.
Hope I was able to answer all your questions. thanks for taking time out of your day to stop by my channel.
@@AprilBasi like Allll the mathematical skills? 😳
@@annaperkins5818 not all but most :-) it's not as daunting as it sounds, you should be fine with just basic math skills.
@@AprilBasi omg ok great, that just settled me down! Lol. Thank you so much for responding!

Hi April! I'm planning on taking BS Chemistry for college and this really encouraged me.

I love that you made these videos!! :) I’m going back to school at 27 (got my associates but never finished school because I just didn’t know what to do). I wanted to be 100% sure this is the career I wanted before investing the money.
Hi I am a graduating Chemistry student and I really want to pave a path in this field. My university didn’t really teach this side of Chemistry and so I am so grateful to have found you!
so sweet thank you!
I am really proud having a chemist that is specialized in cosmetic doing skincare review and career experience sharing in youtube 😍❤️. Love all your videos, i am also a last year student in bachelor of science (applied chemistry)
Thank you. I am looking into the cosmetics field. This helped a lot. Thanks again.

this video is such a blessing. I graduated with a chem degree in early 2019 and since then ive been so depressed because idk what to do with it and can't find a job in my country with it. Thank you for this video, and i hope you keep posting more!

I've been an esthetician for almost 3 years now and I'm finding myself leaning more and more towards continuing my education in hopes of becoming a cosmetic chemist. My big concern is I'm afraid of running into animal testing. I understand animal testing is still (sadly) very prevelant in the cosmetic and beauty industry, and because of this I'm rather hesitant to pursue this path. Have you personally had to test on animals or been in a situation where you've witnessed it?
Hi Claire I was just wondering if you want to continue being an esthetician and cosmetic chemist or do you want to drop being an esthetician and just be a cosmetic chemist.
I love this thank you for the tips! Also, I love your earrings!
Aw omg! 2 years later you’re the first one to notice my earring hahaha! Thank you for watching Cole ❤️
Thank you very much! This video is exactly what I needed
You’re welcome :)
I'm still working on finishing my Chem BS and have been feeling unmotivated, but your vids have been so inspirational. l I love how you filmed this step-by-step. super helpful! For building my resume, I have minimal experience and haven't done any research or internships while in college- how was your experience with that and do you have any tips on getting one?
So interesting. I'm sure I can learn a lot from you :D
That makes me so happy to hear :)

Hi! I’m studying biology in college and my dream job is to become a cosmetic chemist, can I still become a cosmetic Chemist with a biology degree? Or do I have to major in chemistry?
Hi Flower Violet, yes you can, any science degree should be fine. However,
I would suggest maybe minoring in chemistry since you'll be taking a few chemistry classes for your major anyway.
Your videos are so helpful.
thank you babe x
I am so happy I found this video. I want to be an esthetician but I also really want to have my own skincare line. Is it possible to be an esthetician and a cosmetic chemist so I can do both. If so, what should I conquer first? Should I major in chemistry in college to get that knowledge and then go to esthetician school after college? I am sorry this comment is so long I am just trying to figure out how to go about this.
This sounds exactly like me! I want to be an esthetician and have a skincare line as well. I will be majoring in chemistry next month and figure it out from there!
Even I don't know why I the name "April" so attractive
Awww tysm 🥺🤌🏾

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL! Im a first year chemistry major and i really want to be a cosmetic chemist. Im struggling in chemistry tho :/ any tips?
aw congrats you're on the right path! What aspect are you struggling with? what kind of tips would you like?
@@AprilBasi ways to study? Im struggling with studying for tests and such, i understand the concepts and such but all the formulas and enthalpy and word problems confuse me Lol just not sure how to approach so much info
@@camthegoddess this is super late but if you go to office hours and do problems like crazy, you'll be able to do the work in your sleep in no time
@@fallenangelchic thanks!! Im actually no longet a chem major but obvi if someone else had the same problems i did then its super helpful for them haha
I want to get into formulating cosmetics, skin care and hair products but I am confused on whether to do biotechnology or chemistry because I want to use plants that are indigenous to my country which have really little research done on them that is why I am considering biotechnology so that I can be able to do a research project on them. But does biotechnology teach how to make cosmetic products? And does chemistry teach how to make organic products/cosmetics? There are no cosmetic companies in my country so I will literally have to create my own. Which one should I study?
Thank you! This video was so helpful! Do you think it would matter if I got a Chem BA instead of a BS?
no absolutely not. It shouldn't matter.
Would I be able to go into this career with a Bachelors of Science in nursing?
yes of course babe :)
so pretty 🥰
Thank you!!
Could you please answer my questions?
1. Why did you choose cosmetic chemistry?
2. What will you do with this degree?
Thank you very much
Hi! I'm a biomedical sciences major and I've been thinking about switching to chemistry because I think there are more job opportunities after completing my bachelor's. Pharmacy is my go to but I'm not so sure I want to jump into post grad after so much time spent studying. Could you tell me how long it took you to get you chem degree and if it was worth it?
That's a good idea. I say take a gap year before finalizing your decision on going to grad school, just to make sure that's what you really wanna do. I did mine a little different. I got accepted into pham school in my junior year of college so I jumped at the opportunity, but after a year in, I knew it wasn't for me so I went back and got my chem degree. It still took me 4 years to get my chem degree but it was spread out. I hope that makes sense.
@@AprilBasi You mean 4 additional years after 4 studying biology?
@@jasminepearls1047 no 4 years total
Hey. I don’t know if your going to see this but I want to go into this field! I have my own company where I sell organic cosmetics! I want to make lip gloss but I can’t figure out what ingredient I should put in to make the Versagel smoother😩 it’s so sticky. I tried warming it up and adding everything at the same temp but I don’t know what to do now😭
I have done my BS.chemistry.please guide me what to do next to become a cosmetic chemist.
I would try to get an internship next to get your foot in the door x
I live in Washington DC and need a chemist to help create products in a salon setting can you help?
I am confused should i do specifically BS chemsitry or Bachelor's in Chemical engineering whould also do the job...
Because i am alot into skincare and perfumes
Either degree is great! My co worker is a chemical engineer
@@AprilBasi really because I am going to persue either of these but the merit is so High for BS chemistry to get in on the other hand it is easy to get admission in Chemical engineering....
If I can persue this career after doing Chemical engineering then if would be wholesome
Thank you got this video. I’m a biology major do I need a chem degree? It seems like everyone I see on RUclips in this field are all chemists?
Hi April

Is Biochemistry a good pick
Thank you!
So cute💞
Thanks babe xx
Hey April! Could you please tell me which country (USA, UK OR FRANCE) is the best if you want to study and purse a career as a cosmetic chemist. Thank you!
Honestly don't think that matter! Just find a good program Dhwani
Hi April, I really hope you can see this because I would really appreciate the advice! I came across this video since it is almost the end of my high school journey and I am about to apply for universities. I really want to become a cosmetic chemist/formulator in the future but I don't really know which universities degree would suit this job the most. Thank you so much!
Hi Jasmine, any science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc) degree should be good to get you in the door
@@AprilBasi Does the major have to be something as broad as 'biology', 'chemistry' etc? I was thinking of doing something more niche like medicinal chemistry even though it is completely irrelevant to becoming a cosmetic chemist. I love chemistry but I'm struggling slightly with A level chemistry and I feel like I would not be able to survive the course of pure chemistry in university. What are your thoughts on this?
Jasmine Chan yes medicinal chemistry is good! It’s still considered a science degree so you’re on the right path.
Idk if this is an odd question but can you have other jobs while being a cosmetic chemist I’d you choose? I want to be a cosmetologist but I also want to be a cosmetic chemist :(
yes definitely you sure can
hi do u need phd or can degree in chemistry is only enough to be cosmetic chemist?
Degree in Chem is perf!!
I am currently doing B.Pharm. I am planning to do M.Pharm after the 4 years completing it. On order to become a cosmetic chemist what should I do? Can you please guide me cause I am a bit confused. I saw many articles and people saying that Pharmacy is good to become a cosmetic chemist but I am still skeptical. What exactly should I go for from Pharmacy to become a Cosmetic chemist?
Hi! I know you posted this video a long time ago but I would reallllyyyyyyy appreciate if you tell me what degree should I go for in order to be a cosmetic chemist. I am currently doing A levels
Any degree in the sciences, math, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, etc
I did civil engineering & after that I knew I didn't like it that much! And realized was interested, loved skincare & its formulation so what shall I do to become a cosmetic chemist? Do I have to completely switch? Please help! Need honest advice & eagerly waiting for ur response!
sorry for the late response. most chemist's I work with have chemistry degrees or chemical engineering degrees! If you're just trying to create formulas at home I don't think you should go back to school check out chemistscorner.com for more info!
@@AprilBasi Thank you!
Hi! Idk if you’ve mentioned in your videos or not, but can I become a cosmetic chemist with only a chemistry minor? Or do I HAVE to have a degree in science?
I believe a science degree is preferable but don't quote me on that. If you're already far ahead in school in your current major I would stick it out and start looking into getting an internship in cosmetic science to back up your degree.
I am a masters degree student in chemistry from India.wanna pursue my career in cosmetic, fragnance department.Don't know how to achieve my goal.I will be very thankful if u help me
Same.. i am now doing my masters.. and idk what to do after that.
internships/ related research is key you guys! I promise
Do you put formulas together for companies?
Yes I do :)
Did you go to grad school? I’m an undergrad majoring in biochemistry. I thought I wanted to go to med school but throughout the years I decided that it wasn’t for me. So now I’m looking for jobs in that the cosmetics chemist industry. This video was so helpful!
No I did not go to grad school. Have you watched all my videos on this subject? You should if you haven't they are loaded with a lot of information on this. I'm glad this video helped :-)

Hey dear reply me plz. I don't had any experience in science I was an arts student just completed my graduation in BA. So can i work as a cosmetic chemist. By taking education about it before job.
raziya queen I think you will need a science background to do something like this as chemistry is the key to formulation. Anyways there might be other options for you in the beauty industry. Good luck!
Hey Raziya, sorry for the late response! You may still have a chance in this industry. Since you already got your BA I think you should focus on finding lucrative internships that might help you, paid or unpaid, so potential employers see that you're serious about this. Might be your best bet right now.
Is there any chance this job will get automated in the near future ?
Ahh I don’t think so 🤯 I hope not 😥

Hi April. I am in high school currently and really interested in becoming a cosmetic formulator. What degree should I do and is majoring in chemistry hard? How long does it take to finally land a job in the field ? Thanks for the video. Really motivated me.
I suggest you major in chemistry, biochem, really any of the sciences your more interested in, then maybe minor in chemistry, that way you still get those chemistry classes in. Chemistry is quite a challenging degree but trust me if I can do it, you definitely can too!!!
April Basi I am currently studying chemistry physics and mathematics at high school but not biology. Does that mean that I can’t go for cosmetic chemistry ? Thank you for the previous response too 😀
