    A generator is money well spent. We have a whole house generator and it gives me great peace of mind.

    • @msdanaryan
      @msdanaryan  4 года назад +4

      Those are NICE! We might get a panel installed, with an outside outlet for the generator, that lets you flip a switch or two to redirect power to the generator. Not as expensive as the whole house generator, but a convenient way to power key things during an outage.

      Debt Free Dana ツ we live in a rural area of NH and it has come in handy more than once. Although we haven’t lost power nearly as much since we got it. Murphy’s law!

      @@msdanaryan Dana that's exactly what we have because we wanted a gas generator not one that runs off our house propane. I live in the Northern California mountains and our power goes out constantly throughout the year. We have an outside box that powers the majority of our home. It's much cheaper to run for days unlike our neighbors who have a Generac running off of propane.

      Dana, we live in Florida and lose power with the hurricanes. We were not prepared and we waited until a hurricane was coming so we ended up paying $800 for a brand new generator waiting in line with everyone else, but still money well spent. We did put it on the hardware store credit card six months no interest and paid it off in four months. I know that can be frowned upon, but in a situation like that that was a nice option. and my father-in-law installed the panel you were talking about. Well worth it!

      Same, we love our generator. We get a few ice storms each winter and power can be off for several days. Also keeps our sump pump running whereas many neighbours end up with flooded basements when power is off during storms.

    I keep some frozen water bottles in the freezer, as many as I have room for, that way if power goes out it will help keep the freezer colder a bit longer and also provides some extra water when it melts. We have a bar b que grill with an extra propane tank. You can charge your phone in the car. I have a battery powered fan that also has a phone charging outlet that charges while it's running. Scary how dependent we are on electricity and yet ourmelectrical grid is really fragile.

    We had an ice storm several years ago when kids were still home but not super young. Our electricity was out for almost 2- weeks. Using fresh foods first, using the cold to refrigerate what we could but lost 2- freezers worth of food. Thankful that our insurance repaid us for that after having to try to itemize all food items. We had a grill& a fireplace. We could also go to the creek to get water to boil for dishwashing. My niece got her power back much earlier than we did, she was so kind to let us come and take showers and do laundry. ( She also had a husband and 3- very small kids at the time.

    There's a definite advantage to being vegan because fresh fruits and vegetables take a long time to rot. I'm thinking about making up a little solar system and even taking it car camping in the future. a RUclips channel named _DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse_ has a ton of great information. He's always testing batteries and solar panels. The cost is much cheaper than I had thought.

Is there any way that you can help me with this? Thank you so much if you can!

    My electricity has went out before but not for days, just for hours. I can't imagine 4 days. I can't even process that. But you don't realize how many things run on electricity until you don't have it. My garage door doesn't open without electricity. I had to figure out how to open it manually one time cause like everything else, it runs on electricity. LOL We are so used to the conveniences of electricity that we don't even know how to do things that our ancestors did without it. It's like the world stops when you don't have electricity. Great video. I need to see about getting a generator just in case I ever end up with longer than a few hours of no electricity. I have candles from bath and body works, and in the past when electricity went out I would light them. It's amazing how well they light up the rooms. So those are great thing to use also when it comes to being able to see and walk around without bumping into everything. So always keep candles around. Thanks for the great tips.

    Careful with leaving portable generators outside too. We used to put ours in the garage with the door cracked a bit. If it had been left on the porch someone would have stolen it. Pretty easy to find too as thieves just have to follow the sound.

    I did not realize that you were from the Philly area until I saw this video, I am also! That storm was horrible, I got caught in it outside at the beginning, because it started so suddenly! Also, do you have any videos about buying a house? I looked through, but I didn't see any. I need all the advice that I can get!

    When our power went out during a storm recently we grabbed our solar landscaping lights and brought them inside for additional lighting. Just popped the stake off and they could sit in tables, counters, closet etc. Next morning took them out for recharge. I appreciated that they were easily accessible since it was dark when the power went out.

    I learned my lesson after Hurricane Sandy. (I was going to my local supermarket to charge my phone each day. They were nice enough to set up benches and charging stations, allowing people to stay as long as they needed to, in order to charge up everything). After that storm hit, and things got back to normal, l invested in a jackary, a solar charger for my devices, as well as extra cords to use for charging my devices in my car! That was the last time I wanted to be caught unprepared!

    Fridge I think is 4 hours once it gets to temperature above 4 Celsius or something. So you get 4 hours plus 4 hours for food safe where it can be at room temperature. So,e things even longer like yogurt. But raw meet isn’t good. Freezer we were told 24-48 hours. Best to have thermometer to know for sure

I even keep movies and tv shows downloaded to my devices when I here a storm is coming. I learned my lesson when we had that year where all those hurricanes came back to back in FL and I was two weeks without power with a three year old. I was utterly unprepared being from up north originally. Glad things are back to normal.

    We lost our power for four days after a tornado hit our area. We did not have a generator and had to throw out a lot of food. We used our camping gear to cook food outside and had battery operated lanterns for the evenings. We found that we had a lot of time on our hands because we did not have access to technology. To keep ourselves busy, we worked outside and managed to complete a bunch of projects, including taking down an entire fence. We were relieved when the power came on, but we learned a lesson about how much time we had been spending online.
