@@j.d.8160 An FPGA chip can be written to by a developer to do anything they want. In gaming terms that work is usually focused on simulating game consoles. The 'open' part is just Analogue's branding for them giving developers access to the FPGA chip in a device. So far they've only done that with the Pocket.
So without them officially announcing OpenFPGA support, that means the Analogue 3D is kinda locked down to only be what they allow it to be. Of course with their history of official-unofficial 'jailbreak' firmware, it's anyone's guess what will actually end up being supported.

10:10 - Your hunch may be correct and I understand people hang out in discord and discuss certain details that may not always be known to everyone. With Analogue stating "Analogue3D does not support openFPGA," think that's clear it's following the trend set by the Duo. Then some people get confused between OpenFPGA on the Pocket versus additional cores found on the NT mini/Noir or Mega SG with the related adapters. So if we do see additional cores, it will be from Analogue alone in the spirit of the NT mini/Noir and Mega SG with Master System/Game Gear/Colleco. There will be no additional access to the FPGA by third party devs based on their current statement and hardware choices.
With the Analogue Duo, some people had high hopes of other cd based cores comes to the console. It didn't happen and users are still waiting on an jailbreak update to match the official core. So I think it's best for people just to base their expectations off of what is known today rather than what may be possible. So everything in the PR release along with reading ROMs off the hardware with a jailbreak is fair. It is possible we may see 64DD support, maybe there could be options for Aleck64 arcade games and if we're real lucky, Wide Boy 64. Though Analogue never supported the Super Gameboy 1 or 2 with the Super NT. Maybe that boils down to the Cyclone V just not having enough LE for those additions or maybe Analogue wants to resell another 4k Super NT console variant in the future. When the price is $250, it hints to me that they won't be real generous with extra cores because they're offering a deal on the hardware.

    • @PixelCherryNinja

    • @jeremy__hopkins
      @jeremy__hopkins Месяц назад +1

@@PixelCherryNinja True and I think that's a very fair way to look at the A3D. Analogue hardware can be confusing. People still ask basic questions like what is the Analogue DAC, what does it do and why is it important? So with everything, I think being as clear as possible with what's possible with FPGA hardware is important especially for newcomers that might jump in because of the N64. Otherwise people end up spending money, maybe expecting more and not happy when those features aren't available. Less important for those who've seen Analogue FPGA development over years, get it, and understand the routine.
Anyway, my hope is you're correct about the additional cores. They would make a nice addition.

Maybe even split it three ways to a 4k OLED, out to streaming and then downscaled to a CRT. Yeah... this becomes messy real fast without the DAC.

Sorry, one other note: you mentioned the A3D will sell out but this seems more like a preorder similar to the Duo. Usually with preorders they open them up for a set amount of time, take in the preorders and then close them for manufacturing and delivery months later. That should make it so there's not a rush to grab one because inventory isn't based on a set amount which has already been manufactured and is sitting in a warehouse like the special edition Pockets.
I agree though, for those who want one, probably best not to sit and wait around. Just means if someone isn't available at the exact time to order one, hopefully they won't sell out in 5 minutes. At least, that was my interpretation of their preorder system for the A3d. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not really. We have no idea if the 3D will have openFPGA. If it's like every other Analogue console, it won't. The pocket is their only system with other cores on it. So all this is, is a $250 N64 core that can play cartridges. Which for what it does is still a good purchase.
But if the Mars does what they promise, it will still sell.

Keep in mind this won't support OpenFPGA. In that sense, there aren't external people who are hacking, modding or hackmodding Analogue consoles. The jailbreaks are extra features used in development usually by Kevtris - the main engineer - which are eventually released to the public as jailbreaks. Really it's just a way for Analogue to sidestep issues with ROMs and it's a nice bonus for customers. The only time Analogue has released non OpenFPGA cores, it's been with the NT mini/Noir due to the cost and with the Mega SG and cart adapters along with Coleco as a bonus. Super NT and Duo had no additional secondary cores. Well, I guess the Duo had Supergrafx but they didn't go above and beyond including PC-FX.
N64 did have the Wide Boy and 64DD so maybe Analogue will decide to release support as you mentioned. Or maybe like the Super Gameboy 1/2, they'll decide, nope, $250 for a 4k console is worthy of N64 alone without any other bells and whistles.

I don’t see the point in this, honestly. I do get the reason, but I feel it’s too little too late.
Why? Retrotink 4k exists. An upscaler that has already been proven to be an outstanding piece of hardware, but works with all consoles, unlike this Analogue product which is confined to its own exclusivity. They haven’t shown any pictures of what this can do either, so that’s a little troubling.
Also, a CRT with an N64 will achieve the same results, if not better, than what this aims to do.
Not everyone has a CRT, but not everyone has a pricey 4K OLED either. Which, you WILL need a 4K OLED to get the same results of a CRT with inky blacks, motion clarity, fast response times and low latency.
I have an 83” OLED, but I think N64 games will look absolutely terrible blown up on a big screen. The Analogue 3D will not improve FPS or texture mapping and the games will still run at 20-30 frames with muddy graphics.
Not a knock against Analogue for that, but their marketing is based on nostalgia and I think consumers are going to be disappointed with the final results. Couch co-op that you used to enjoy with the boys when you were a teen is magic not easily recreated today.
Their marketing strategy is touting how awesome of a console it is for multiplayer and how it’s going to capture the look of a CRT, both of which are very difficult to reproduce.
The N64 is definitely a product of its time, and is best enjoyed on a CRT. Once the dust settles, enthusiasts will ditch this for old hardware imo.
There’s a reason this is still up for preorder a week after launching.
