Currywurst is THE thing we germans can fight about a lot. Cut or not cut? What type of sausage? Ketchup, mayonnaise and/or special sauce (mostly Schaschlik sauce)? Additional ingredients? Friendships are ruined about this.
It depends. In Berlin they actually prefer skinless sausage, cut into pieces and covered with tomato based sauce and curry. In the Rhineland it's more like "Bratwurst" cut to pieces. The bun is optional, but not essential. More common with grilled "Bratwurst" and mustard.
You can say döner became popular in Berlin but it's not true that it's invented in Berlin. I think it can be called German influenced döner. It's invented in late 19th century during Ottoman era in Turkey. Furthermore, you can see variety of döner kebabs in Turkey compared to Germany
Well ... that depends on your point of view what döner kebap is. Of course the idea of meat on a vertical rotating grill is not a Berlin invention, neither is the idea to serve meat in a piece of flatbread. But AFAIK the classic Berlin-style Döner Kebap (meat with salad and sauce in a quarter pide bread) was indeed invented here and became sort-of popular in Turkey only later. There is a reason why döner kebap shops in places like Austin, TX or Dubai are Berlin-themed, not Turkey-themed.
I partly agree with you. I just wanted to emphasize the difference between döner and Berlin-style döner. When you say döner, people think all döner kebaps look like Berlin-style döner but actually there are variety of döners in the world including syrian-style. We have döner types specific to different regions. Their sauces and bread types are different that is why we call them differently like Hatay-style döner kebap, Bayburt-style döner kebap.
@@berkaypeker5532 Wrong - what you are talking about is the Kebap itself, the roasted Kebap, but the Döner Kebap, with this name and more important, HOW it is served, was invented in Berlin.
@@JohnSmith-ez8dn As a Turk I know what Döner and Kebap means. Even others Gyro and Shawarma based on the word 'döner'. Arabs couldn't pronounce Turkish word 'çevirme' so they made it shawarma and Greeks translated it and called gyro which means spinning like döner. I say it just became popular in Germany because of Turkish immigrants. They just brought döner with them and changed a bit by adding some veggies.
I agree. What you get in Berlin is often very different from other parts of the country. What they seem to be eating was more street-type food. Which is like going to New York City and getting a street pretzel and calling it American food. Its not its a great New York City food item.

So why force visitors to eat it, just because it is - no has been - typical? Others even feel insulted cause they read "german food" in the title and saw them eating pizza. What's this conservative food patriotism good for? They ate what they liked and afterwards they can say "we liked the pizza we had in Germany". I prefer that to "we tried Sauerkraut and we hated it - german food sucks!" ;-)
You have a point. I also think, that nowadays it's really common in Germany to eat all these things. For the moment I feel like the Asian cuisine has a good standing in Germany. Its hard to watch you eating all these international stuff when you come to my country, instead of trying our traditional german food. Come to the south of germany and have some "Semmelknödel mit Rahmschwammerln" or "Krautschupfnudeln", "Kasspatzn" and so much more. But the most disturbing fact is, that you try to explore german cuisine that is mostly based on meat and you will never find what german food is all about as an vegetarian. Have a nice trip and come to my place in Heidelberg. Restaurant Wolfsbrunnen since 1550.
"all this international stuff". They literally ate a Currywurst which is probably one of the most german foods ever and drank german beer. No one has to eat meat if they don't want to.
you're confusing german with bavarian. it's not like traditional bavarian food is all over germany or is the epitome of german. there are tons of other foods. besides, although i'm not a vegan or vegetarian, it's just stupid to call them out for trying to explore german cuisine in spite of that.
You are disappointed for not having an animal corpse on your plate? You prefer meat made from tendons, blood, pus and feces vs. meat made from quinoa or lentil protein?
Jay Bee This is exactly the point. Natural meal for a homo sapiens. If you don't like it, it's also ok. I'm always wondering why vegan food has to look like non-vegan food nowadays? I can't see any reason why you can get "vegan sausage". When you eat salad or vegetables you also don't "press" it into a sausage form or do you? I don't. And I think that Hank only wanted to point out that this is not typical German, also Pizza, it's common, but not typical.
@@SunnyTomcat1 Many people are vegan because they think it's ethically the right thing and they want to save the animals and NOT because they never liked meat! I love it, that I can eat a yummy sausage without harming anyone 😊
Johanna Gerke-Saat If you think so I'm fine with it. I don't complain when someone prefers eating vegan. My point is - encountering to Jay Bees question - why does vegan food have to look like meat and sausage? When I cook lentil it will look like lentil, not like a steak.

Hipster coffee, pizza and disastrous vegan sausage are not considered as german. Please change the title. As a german native i have felt insulted :((

that was interesting.. and entertaining... quality material on youtube is rare... so thx
Nice commenters like you is even rarer :)
What is the song called at around 1:50, i tried everyting, shazam, soundhound, googleing the lyrics but nothing😩
I missed a little bit 04:38 that typical ochre-coloured berlinean curry powder put over the sauce making it a currywurst ^^
Jes !
The origin, more than half hundred years ago, was only the Wurscht, pure Currypowder ( hot or not ), Worshesteshire sauce and pure Tomato ketchup, no Curryketchup.
And it was no hot dog, they had eaten it by using a toothstick.
Times have changed, more and more turkish sell Currywurst, but ......
I love how Jess wasted no time dressing it with pepper. The look of shock that you had accidentally ordered a whole pizza hadn’t even left her face yet and she’s like a,right I’m in!
My favorite traveling couple ever!
naw you are so so sweet :D
Tf no vegan tf!!

My sister and I love your videos! We love the way you edit, and always love the music you put in your videos as well. Can’t wait for upcoming vids!
Awww you are so sweet! Tell your sister we say HELLO :)
I miss the adresses of the places you've been to. But your editing is awsome and the music is just lovely.
I am a German and I love when people from the world come visit Germany and try everything. By the way very nice video👌🏼But one thing I have to say in Berlin there are a lot of lakes😹
We tried German food in Berlin, so let's have a pizza :-)
Flammkueche is pizza as well...
@@pummysworld369 how about no?
Its holy roman Empire food 😂
@@pummysworld369 Naa it's not. It's german tho :)
You were at the same ort i live
A Beer garden in Tiergarten is just perfect!
I just love your video, brilliant!
They didn't try any real German food at all...
Currywurst
Ihr seid beide so sympathisch....und so herrlich neugierig auf unser good old Germany....weiterhin viel Spaß bei eurer Reise.
So many critics on what you ate, where you ate...
I liked the video
Great quality
Nice to see Berlin
And its places
That's it 👌
I love Berlin! I was there in 2019 in the fall season and fell in love. I want to go back and take my son with me.
We'll somehow we missed the beer garden when we were there. We went right through that park as well. haha.. look at you guys finally getting in to beer! German beer at that 👌- Trevor
it is a little hidden and tucked away! we had to use google maps to find it :)
The traditional way of eating Currywurst is sliced with sauce and curry powder on top with a Brötchen ( bread roll ) or/and fries.
"I'm scared of the spice!" - Takes a bit bite :D
You two are awesome. I hope you have a great time here in Germany. How long are you going to stay here?
“It’s 6pm and look how light it is”,
they must come from Brisbane, Australia. It gets dark during summer around 7.00pm .If they come from the southern states it gets darker much later during summer, Like 9pm .
That vegan sausage really looks like a sausage! But what I'd like to try is the Korean spicy tofu bun. That looks so yummy! Thanks for the food tips. Never visited Berlin but would love to!
-Lotta
If you ever get the chance we totally recommend a visit! Berlin is amazing!!
Lanttimatkat are from finland?
I'm not saying that wasn't a vegetarian sausage, since you can't really tell just by the looks, but there was nothing vegetarian or vegan listed on that menu...
fjellyo32 yes! 😊
Lanttimatkat hehe I thought so, cause your name looks finnish
That café, Roamers, they are in for the first coffee is brilliant. I was there at the start of this year for a breakfast one morning. The staff were a laugh and really friendly, atmosphere was unreal. It was a small little place but you felt comfortable straight away.
Couldn't reccommend it more.
That def looks like they gave you the actual meat one.. the grayer/lighter brownish one next to it on the grill looks legit veg sausage... eek
So cool, when you were at the 3rd wave coffee,a completely rare song " The Cape" was playing. Made me happy! Great video!!
berlin is great in so many ways, but because of so many outside influences, it's about as german as london or new york.
But that's why Berlin is so super awesome.
didn't i say that?
Sorry, I guess I misread your post.
Depends on where you are. There are still real Berliners around, we just avoid the touristy places.
What was the beer garden called? That beer and pizza looked delicious!
the currywurst, bakeries and the pretzels were my favorite treats for my trips to Germany. I an't get the same stuff here at the same quality in Chicago. They are similar, but just not the same! Great ingredients, makes great food! Germany,, great good, beautiful people and culture, great architecture and efficient transportation systems!
totally agree! germany is amazing :D
nice to hear such things from an American,i'm from germany btw,i was never in the USA but i hope i'll be in the next years i think America is Awesome too :D
love Berlin! So excited for the rest of Germany and Europe!
so many more Germany videos to come :)
annnnnnnnnnnnnd add that coffeee shop to the list! Great video guys! Berlin looks like so much fun!!
the coffee shop is SOO worth a visit!
i really like your friendly videos of our country, added with very good sounds. i love to see "my Germany" through the eyes of yours. thank you for this. greetings from the very north of Germany on the Baltic Seas coast.
Well, if you guys believe Löwenbräu would be a good beer, then I don't want to find out what you drink at home.
Personally, no matter where I am, if it says Löwenbräu, I'm not entering, just because the beer is just too bad.
Furthermore you're going exclusively for stuff that hardly differs from fast food and you're entirely missing the actual good part of Berlin.
If you have a chance to come back again, try restaurants like "Dicke Wirtin" and you'll discover a whole different world of the REAL Berlin.
Thanks for your vlogs.. keep it up😊
The food looks so delicious! Thanks for the video guys, getting close to that 100k mark!
yes so close :D thanks guys :)
that is some quality film making you guys did. really enjoyed watching it. And even though i live really close to Berlin i've never been to a Berlin food-market. I'll make sure to change that this summer. :) also gonna check out the coffee place you visited.
This was so interesting! As a vegan, I really appreciate you showing what vegan/vegetarian food we can find in Berlin. Loved this vlog as always!
I second that. : ) I'm nervous to leave out home country because i'm not sure if id be able to figure out where to find vegan food.
There is quite a good selection of it in Germany now. There is also an app/several apps that will help you find vegan options.
yes Germany is actually very vegan friendly :)
No We Dont .....
I love Tofu Tussi at the market! They make their own tofu I think. They sell tofu pouch with stuffed veggies or seaweed and serve it on zoodle salad. Really yummy!
I just discovered your channel yesterday and have been binge watching your videos. I absolutely love y’all and your work! I’m hooked. Keep traveling!!!
Nice German foods flying the nest wow
so glad you enjoyed the video :D
Wonderful video, thanks for visiting germany :)
I lived in Australia several months and it still shocks me how they pronounce „Crêpe“ 😂
yea no wonder :D the "Cr or Br" is really hard to pronounce its kinda unique to germans u will not find that in the english Language xD
Shocking Really? Crehp!
I love Germany, the history, culture, food, beer and the people.
Cannot wait to be in Berlin as a vegan. I’m so excited to go back to Berlin. I’m going to make the most of it even though I’ll be in a classroom for a lot of it!
when are you heading over?? Berlin is AMAZING!!
Flying The Nest in about 2 months. I’ve been there before but wasn’t there long enough. Now I’m doing a conference course to help with my university studies whilst I’m in Berlin
Visit Viasco in Berlin, the brunch is phenomenal and their regular kitchen is just as good.
Lots of hugs to you. Loveable people.
Currywurst ist not the best WURST in Germany!! Try the "Thueringer Bratwurst"😉Amazing Experience for me!
You really want to start the german sausages wars again ;)
Or bavarian Weißwurst or Nürnberger Rostbratwurst, all of that tastes good
Currywurst is the best 😜
Subscribed and notifications turn on. Amazing vid officially love you guys
ahh welcome to the fam :)
Hardly any of the stuff you have tasted is real German food,
The only important thing is that they liked the food which was made here if they come back they will someday find geniuen german food😅
I visited Berlin 3 years ago and I fell in love. watching this brought back many good memories so thank you so very much!!! :)
Bravo, well said.
Well I would recommend to go to northern Germany and for good southern food our Austrian friends do it way better.
I really dont see how two Bundesländer make up the whole of germany now...
I'm glad you liked it
I’m gonna need to get that hot dog next time I’m in Berlin...
You're gonna need 2
You people dont get the german humor ! They love trolling vegeterians 😂
they might have gotten the wrong hot dog since Germans are terrible at english.
jokkoj Curry 36 serves plenty of tourists every single day so it wouldn't be that surprising at all if their staff understood English...
either way that's a regular hot dog , not vegan.
Awesome videos. Natural presentation. I love to visit Germany mainly Bavaria. I am in South Africa.
Excuse me? Ofcourse the beer is good. You're in Germany. Fosters Lager?...Pffff. 😂😜
I'm Australian.. been here 28 years, drunk plenty of beer and I don't think I've ever had a Foster's.. pretty sure it's export only! 😀
Where will you go in Germany too? Frankfurt/Main, Freiburg i.Breisgau, Konstanz, Kiel?
We are going to be driving from Berlin to Frankfurt :)
OMG Vegetarian Sausage and Pizza, that is sooo German..... I am from Germany and im very disappointet
Hank Scorpio Und das enttäuscht dich weshalb?
Pretty hard to watch this on an empty stomach 😄😄
Berlin is a great city
dude, none of that was actual german or berlin food... poor guys ^^
All the yes!! Love Berlin and you did such an amazing job showcasing this awesome city!
oh wow thank you so much Amber :) We really do love this city!
I'm not vegetarian, why am I here?
Sorry!!! At least you could try everything we did, but with meat :)
You said Tiergarten just perfectly! I’m still crying because you were HERE! You were so CLOSE and I soll didn’t get to meet you :( hope someday our paths will cross!
ahhh noooo :( hopefully next time we can visit for longer!
you should try vegan Döner :)
vegan doner!! I didn't even know they did those! we did see doner shops everywhere tho!
Flying The Nest yes they are not sold in those normal turkish döner restaurants. You have to go to vegan restaurants. There is restaurant called "Vöner" in Friedrichshain that sell those 😊
in Germany we have two time more döner shops than fast food restaurants
Romina EP wenn’s kein Türke verkauft ist es kein guter Döner.
Und übrigens gibst überall vegetarische Döner ist halt mit Schafskäse und ohne gleich
Much love from Philippines!
You must eat a „Döner“ ;)
Or you start the day with a German bread 🍞 breakfast ;)
haha we have had SO much bread since coming to Germany!
Such really nice video interludes for the coffee shop and tiergarten. A nice little break/intro for each segment. Well-shot with good camera & lighting and care. Nice to see - they make your vlog better than most!
sad thing.. u travel to germany and do not even know to say "Thank you".... in german....
yea because it doesnt fucking matter xD first of all maybe u jsut there to experiance the culture 2nd english is a freaking world language many people in berlin speak more english then german these days :)
No, you can learn some respect for other cultures, and at least have enough respect to say thank you in their language.
Martin McNickle idk man.. As i said english is Much more common used these days... To think bout for many workers its easier to understand english since they are not even used to german :)
Maybe when they're speaking to someone who doesn't know German, they'll switch to English... but the language everyone speaks to each other is German.
everyone uses german here in germany, just if tourists ask you something on english ,only then you speak english
Everything looks great!
Such a lovely couple! I like your videos, keep going.
Expected german food like the title says, saw hardly anything real german in the video, disliked...germany has a ton of authentic classic dishes to offer! Hipster coffee, pizza and disastrous vegan sausage are not considered as german. Please change the title. As a german native i have felt insulted :((
wtf? why do u feel insulted by a title? im german too mate. so just saying they tried the currywurst .. yea it was different from the one u normally get ok its just a variation. and if u just travel through berlin its still kinda hard to find "real german" vegan food restaurants :)
Nice job! It always such an eye-opener to see Berlin through other perspectives.
Berlín Déjate Querer The best way to enjoy Berlin is with footage from the 1940's
gay coffee and vegan sausage wow you actually managed to experience the real berlin
try a real german city next time
The "Tiergarten" is little forest in Berlin, where kings hunted wild animals. The wild animals were transferred from other forest.
Come to VIENNA HAHA.
BETTER!!!!.
O.m.g. Melange in VIENNA. .
That is nice
A Käsekrainer. ...hmmmm.
We went to Vienna earlier this year 😊 you should be able to track down the 2 videos we did here on the channel!
Flying The Nest i hope...
Thats better german ?
Better Vienna. .haha
Schnitzel. ..Gulasch...Sachertorte
E.c. thats amazing! !!!
Nice day... Kaiserschmarn!
You saw like 1 % of Berlin, but i think you got most of the atmosphere there. The philosophie of beer is way more complex than you think.
I hope you come back and see more of Germany! :)
Deine Sonnenbrille sieht katastrophal scheisse aus.
Erwartest du, dass die zwei dich verstehen? :D
Berliner Eisbein (boiled pork) and Königsberger Klopse (meatballs with capers in white sauce) are my favourite in Berlin
Coffee in Berlin is shit. That stuff is basically hipster starbucks! If you want real coffee go to an Austrian or Itailan restaurant
Naturally, you are talking about " Coffee to go " Homebrewed German coffee is quite good.
Why would I talk about "Coffee to go"?
Because German coffee as such is exellent. But Fast Store coffee is often mediocre. The people selling " economical done " coffee are in it for profit only. So it is different from the quality to coose yourself for your domestic choice
Love your videos cause it is great to see Germany through your eyes.
Somehow I thought they were talking of Hipster food only. But I have to admit as an "expat" of Berlin living in Taiwan, I love the variety of food in Berlin. From Sichuan Chinese food to food from Peru and Syria to Bavarian food, Berlin is great city
Currywurst is absolutely incredible. I absolutely love it :)
