  • Kristin Westdal has been passionate about animals and the natural environment almost her entire life. As a marine biologist specializing in Arctic marine mammals, she currently works for the PEW Environment Groups Oceans North Canada. She has worked extensively in Canada's eastern Arctic with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association researching narwhal, beluga and killer whales. She also ran a kayaking operation in Hudson Bay from 2001 to 2005 that offered unique and close encounters with beluga whales. Kristin has a master's degree in environmental science from the University of Manitoba where her thesis examined movement and diving of narwhal in northern Hudson Bay. Last year she was the research expedition leader on Oceans North Canada's Lancaster Sound Arctic Whale Survey. Currently conducting research on critical habitat, distribution and population size of the western Hudson Bay beluga population, she lives in Winnipeg when not studying in the arctic.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

So interesting to hear of the power of sound in water and how sensitive whales are. As an expert in the field of ancient healing and transformational music, the issue of water and whales was definately known. It's amazing.

We humans are adept at accepting what clever beings we are, while at the same time completely ignoring the consequences of our 'cleverness'. Since the ice age ended, Scotland has been rising and the South of England is sinking, we've known this for decades now. As the weight of ice was removed, landmasses have 'readjusted'. The same has happened all across the Northern Hemisphere. Every litre/gallon/tonne of fossil fuels burned will literally change the shape of the planet.
But even the 'answers' are not that simple. A company is pile driving wind turbines into the North Sea bed and towns and villages all along the North East coast of England have had to live with the constant sound of a deep booming bell during the day even though it is being done between 30 and 50 miles away into the ocean floor. If Greenland is losing it's weight of ice it is not hard to imagine that seismic activity and therefore noise will increase. As the ice clears, sea traffic increases. If Humans can hear pile drivers 30 - 50 miles out to sea.. what is all of this noise doing to the marine life? To imagine that there is no disruption is simply beyond ridiculous.
Too few people will see this woman share her insights, and too few will be distracted from their 'busy' lives to care enough to take action. We live in the age of technological marvels and we are pleased with ourselves. When the day comes, and we see what we have really achieved... it will be far too late. But 'they' will still find a way to to tell us that, it is 'everyone's' responsibility to pay to redress it. That is how the economy works.. buy this and it will fix everything, pay tax and we can fix it. We need to start thinking about how we hold corporations/governments accountable for ignoring the blindingly obvious for the sake of their profits and shareholders good mood at the corporate AGM's.

I agree though, the noise around our planet is having freakish and possibly evolving effects on wild and plant life.
I'd like to know what sort of correlation has been done with mass wild/plant life beachings or deaths to recurring noises in their proximities, and consider migrations also.

What if? Come up with a sollution for once. Yes our hearts are aching but wtf can we do about it when our government will allow for oil and gas exploration and at the same time free energy has been found for about a hundred years?
