....but the horn is an effing warning signal. That's how I learned to stay away from railroad tracks when I was a kid somewhere around 3-4 yrs old. Sure I ran away to hide under the slide at a nearby playground when I heard the thing, but the horn is what stuck in my memory. it's what made me form the connection railroad tracks=danger. Stay away. I can't believe this asinine idea even entered someone's head "no horn zone". Bulls**t.

Cheers from Deer Park, Tx. where I'm 2 miles from the closest track & if outside can hear trains on the PTA/UPRR line at Tx-225 & Center St. on a cool evening. ;-)

This is a thing? In British Columbia, here in the lower mainland, the freight trains going in and out of the port of Vancouver blow their horns all the time, regardless of what residential neighborhood they travel through. The long distance and commuter trains do the same. I don't think I would be comfortable around a rail crossing if I didn't know I'd hear the train coming a mile away via its whistle.

I personally think that a train horn is a critical peice of safety equipment.
It's basically the only thing the engineer has at their disposal to prevent accidents.
It can't stop quickly or swerve to avoid a collision, it can only blast the horn to warn others to move out of the way.

Larry R Wendell Jr you want to know something? A couple months ago I read this article about some guy on a personal/probably merciless mission, yes mission to KO horns being blown at grade crossings, particularly in Bethlehem, PA. What he doesn't realize is horns are used to warn cars, pedestrians and so on of a train's approach or worst case scenario, warn a trespasser to get off immediately. I'm hoping this guy fails in his mission. There's at least a few railroads somewhere in the U.S. where there's at least one line that's a quiet zone the entire way, literally. Here's the link if you want to take a look. www.lehighvalleylive.com/bethlehem/index.ssf/2014/05/bethlehem_man_on_quest_to_stop.html

Sorry late posting. What is the function of train horn in railroad crossing with gates? And why the last blast must be in US as late as the train passes the crossing? In Finland, Europe train dont blow a horn anymore at all. They ignore it before the level crossing without gates, bell, light, stop sign and its location EVEN behind the bend. The regulation changed in 2005. In 1973 they stop to use the horn before crossing with gates and while passing another train. The same time daylight running lights were taken on use. It was changed to hight beam in 1992 and flurescent colour sticker installed 2013 on the nose of locomotive.

Blame WEALTHY REPUBLICAN LAWYERS for no horn ordinances, it happened here in Texas 5 years ago & while the prior 10 years there had been no accidents at 3 near by grade crossings, within the past 5 years there have been 3 FATAL accidents at 3 crossings within 2 miles of track & who knows how many close calls..
This is one reason why railroads are now equipping locomotives with CCTV cameras (Usually on conductor side of windshield on Amtrak, BNSF, CSX, KCS and UP locomotives, NS has cameras on engineer side of newer locomotives (They appear as a white box just inside conductor side of windshield near center post.)
The no horn ordinances can be repealed, just don't vote for Republicans in Congress as well as state legislature..

It's not a partisan issue. My hometown of Berwyn, IL (a few miles from Chicago) is a liberal, democrat city that has imposed the "Quiet Zone" for trains. Canadian National and BNSF go through the city and ever since, there's been a notable increase in accidents and deaths crossing incidents. You're right about Quiet Zones being dangerous, but just want to put my 2 cents that it's not partisan.

How many dashcams are there of trains sounding their horns, yet still hit something? Why? Because someone knows that the horn is sounding that a train is coming and they have two intentions in mind:
      1) Beat the train.
      2) Suicide by train.
New Zealand has quite a few videos of close calls, regardless of the train horn.
The woman locked in a police car hit by a train? The cops didn't respond to the horn because it sounded normal to them as the train approached the crossing. Didn't prevent injury to her as she was handcuffed and locked in a police vehicle parked on the tracks.
The fatality of a woman hit by a train in Champagne, Illinois? Three other people ran across the tracks, despite the warnings. Railfanner videotaped her getting splattered like a tomato across the front of the lead engine.
Train sounded its horn. Minivan driven by mom speeding across train station parking lot to beat the train to the crossing? Hit by by not ONE train, but TWO trains. Mom and 2 of the 4 kids dead. Other 2 kids critically injured. Minivan was smaller than a sardine can.
