  • Hematite comes in different forms, the best for making paint is earthy hematite, also called "red ochre". Follow me into the desert as I search for earthy red hematite and also find an ancient Native American shrine. This was filmed in the San Pedro River valley of Southeastern Arizona.

Great information Andy! I'm going to be on the lookout for hematite. I love primitive pottery. Your channel is great!

Another great video. I am still on the quest for some really red hematite or ochre in Montana. Found some years ago on a 4 day float Historic Missouri Breaks. I gathered a few nodules, but it was before I was into pottery and did not gather enough, nor do I remember exactly where I got it. We had hiked in off the river and found it in a wash. I have found about a dozen Montana sites for "red earth" since I started primitive pottery, but so far all are the brownish red, which I use. As weather get better I'll look for my Montana El Dorado. Thanks for all you do Andy.

I hope you can find it. In a mineral rich state like Montana it should be out there. You are welcome.

You should come down to where I live Andy. I have a whole hill side of red and yellow ocher. Right under peoples feet and they don’t even know it. I’ve got a 5 gallon bucket full of it. Some of the chunks are the size of bricks and softballs. Others are pea sized. Orangey red, yellow, yellow red, bright red, and dark red. All you have to do is dig about 6 to 8 inches down through the soft clay on top and there you are. There are lots of prehistoric stone tools under the surface as well. The ancient Indians that lived here came to this place to mine it.

Neat! It's a great time of year to go traipsin' around in the desert.

I find it by and in the brook in Vermont. It's soft and comes in different colors. Thanks for the info ☺️

My pigments class includes a map to some good pigment sources in the Southwest. That may help you. ancientpottery.how/courses/natural-pottery-paints-slips-and-pigments/

In the 90’s I worked with a woman from Brazil who bought raw earthenware clay from me to place slabs on her bare abdomen. She said it drew out impurities in the body and made her feel well.

No red ochre? Ochre and hematite are pretty common minerals. Try using mindat.org to locate sources near you.
