My tail light started to go out on my 2007 cobalt, I used to give it a smack and it would come back on. So I don't know if that meant the bulb was going out or the wiring harness went bad. I replaced the bulb, but I used a used surgical glove. Could the oils from my hand, being on the glove, ruin the new bulb I installed? After I installed it, the tail light still didnt work.

If you touch the bulb with your bare hands, take some rubbing alcohol on a cloth and wipe the bulb. Hold the bulb with the cloth on it and install the bulb.
It could have been a bad taillight wire harness.
