- Digging deeper into the blues with one of my favorite new guitar players Jack Ruch. Jack has an amazing way of taking complex concepts like #arpeggios, #diminished licks, and playing the changes #playingthechanges and making them seem simple. In this guitar lesson Jack breaks down all of these concepts and gives you easy ways to implement all of these tools into your own playing!

Thanks for having me on Brett! It was a pleasure.
Thank you sir!
Thanks Brett for all you teach us, and for introducing Jack. Everyone has a different sound and feel and it’s great to hear Jacks sound.
This has been the best explanation of dominant 7th, and diminished arpeggios I've ever heard, and make it applicable! Brett, your facilitating skills are 2nd to none. You ask all the questions that we want to ask. I will definitely be working on these concepts. Thank you both.
You are welcome Nigel! Yeah Jack is an amazing teacher. More coming soon with Jack!
Took a few lessons from Jack to get out of the pentatonic blues rut... the most helpful thing is he told me to learn the dominant 7 arpeggios all over the neck... then the minor 7 arpeggios... then the major 7... and play them over their respective chords. Lightbulb moment for me. Jack is super knowledgeable.
Absolutely! I'm taking some lessons from him as well and the way he uses those arpeggios is a game changer!
Fantastic playing and lesson. Toward the end of the video I was struck by the realization that Jack SPEAKS slowly, chooses his words very carefully and means everything that he says. Exactly like he plays the guitar.
Yep. Very true!
Very interesting observation. So, his playing comes right from his spirit.
This guy has the patent on phrasing! There’s a lot of flashy players that could use some lessons on phrasing from Jack!😁
For sure! I agree his phrasing is incredible!
Jack is excellent. I think the patent holders are BB and LC ruclips.net/video/9D5MMF1K6xo/видео.html
He’s also soft spoken, calming and extremely likable guy
He isn’t trying to own or master anything. He found out where it is. He visits it with respect and patience and appreciates it. That’s why he sounds great. Don’t try to own anything. Just visit it and respect it.
Totally agree!
Hey Brett. It's awesome that you're featuring Jack in this video. Talk about magic fingers! A couple of weeks ago I spent an hour just trying to perfect one of his tasty bends. Thanks!
Thanks man! Jack is amazing!
This is a FANTASTIC instructional video. Thank you Brett and Jack!
Sure thing Richard!
That was amazing Brett. Loved this video and the one with Andy and all your past videos. Jack is amazing and I love his phrasing. Thanks for doing this.
Sure thing Allen! Glad you liked it!
thanku Bret for the awesome content. Jack is such an incredible player.
For sure! Thanks for watching!
I am such a massive fan of Jack's playing. Delighted to see his playing showcased on a big channel like yours sir. Kudos!
Thanks David! Round two coming soon!
One of the best lessons. It's taking me some time to learn all the licks but it's definitely worth it. Upping my game a whole bunch. Thanks to you both!
For sure!!
14 minutes in and the replay/rewind is now broken..... super video and brilliant conversation. Hopefully, I'll get to the end of the video in the next 5 years or so. Thanks Brett, Jack.
Haha! You are welcome!
Grateful to have caught this! Thanks fellas!
Sure thing David!
Amazing lesson! One of the best I've seen. Thanks much.
You are welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
So cool Brett that you are having these awesome 'guest bad ass guitarists' sharing their mad skills and points of view of all things guitar. Thank you so very much! Ah ha moments all over this.
You are welcome! Glad to hear you enjoy the guests!
You said everything I needed to hear in that first two minutes. Love how you take your time man...cats can be missing out on that these days.
Really good content in this video. Guitar teacher myself and ya you so do learn by teaching and with the realization that everyone learns differently. Secondary dominant chords and where the dimished chord comes from ....great stuff here.
Thanks for checking it out Kim!
Well that was spectacular and made total sense. A7b9 just happens to contain a diminished 7 chord with 4 roots and resolves nicely to D7. So many options for phrasing.
For sure. Thanks for checking out the vid!
That was a nice "oh shit" moment to find out how Ray Charles got some of his sounds in a progression. Thanks. Very well explained and Jack is as smooth as spun honey.
This is T-Bone Walker Style all Day long.😎😎😎Ray Charles???😂🤣😂
Masterful! Thanks for this great interview.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Thank you Brett and Jack. That was amazing! I'll be spending a lot of time with this video. Will definitely have to break off one small chunk at a time, but man this was so good. Great questions Brett, and Jack you're such a soulful player. Love it. When is round 2?
Thanks for checking it out! Got another round coming soon!
Well Done Brett for slowing the pace of discussion to allow Jack to fully explain and demonstrate the flow, simply and concisely to allow the viewer to absorb the theoretical and practical application. Sounds relaxingly beautiful.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!!
Jack and Brett....That Wednesday is purely awesome 👏🥰 ! Cheers from France 🇫🇷
Thanks Belo! Thanks for tuning in!
Love Jack! Such great tones and feel!
Yep agreed!
Mr. Ruch is such a talented instructor. Hard find guys that can play AND communicate in a comprehensible fashion. well done.
Agreed he is amazing!
Love Jack Ruch , he is a true legend, and super humble guy.i love the sound of his guitar. its just so blues. Merci Brett et Jack pour la leçon .
Great stuff I agree! He will be back soon!
Really useful lesson to jazz up my blues, thanks
Sure thing John!
Sounds great, thank you for sharing your video with us
Sure thing!
Great lesson. Thanks jack and Brett.
Sure thing John! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Brett and Jack.
Sure thing!
Some of the most beautiful phrasing I have heard in a long time. That is just the most soothing Use of notr choice Well mixing the major and minor Pentatonic beautifully as well as some diminished lines, Not to mention some modal notes and just an incredible knowledge of how harmony and melody are all contained in the underlying chords. Youndo not have to be particularly complicated with the voicings some dominant seventh chords, 9th chords and those Stax records Steve cropper thirds with a few passing Chords reminiscent of stormy Monday blues. The scales that he switches between seamlessly and beautifully as well his ability to Play leading chord tones without making it obvious because his use of blues licks that you think you are used to hearing, Because in blues every three or four note mini phrases that make up the big phrases or things that everyone does are there, but the masters link them together with much more finesse and the ability to relax and not play over the music and Separate as if they are jamming on top of something. He plays to really mesh with the song. He never loses sight of his role as an integral part of the whole as opposed to a hired gun slinger bluesman. They hired guns play blistering runs with guys like Stevie Ray Vaughan. What makes his stuff fun is not because Of very creative phrases but because of his sense of rhythm. Tone and the size of the strings he uses Plus his physical strength on the instrument It’s so palpable it’s like a Washington a blues sports car.. Been playing for 35 years and recently I’ve come to appreciate the guys that make blues sound elegant and gorgeous as opposed to simply badass and something that inspires you to drink beer and party. This is one of the songs that also it is obviously a blues to any musician, To your average music aficionado I think they would consider this more of a jazz blues not because it’s avant-garde with complex Melody lines and bebop scales and so forth but because it moves with some jazz progressions thrown in like the 6-2-5
Wonderful playing as always
Thanks for checking it out!
Great video. I subbed to Jack’s RUclips Channel and his Instagram, beautiful tones and playing, so smooth and elegant. Makes me cry, “LORD have mercy !!!” According to the band the Lovin Spoonful, there’s 1352 guitar pickers in Nashville, playin since they was babies and gettin work since they were 2. LOL 😂 Papa you always get the best on your video shows, you are the man. Really dig Jack’s style, great player. Thanks. Ya’ll take care now, hear. 🎸👏👍👌🙏😎✌️
Thank ya sir! Nice to see ya!
Thank You Jack
He says you are welcome haha!
Jack is a great teacher. Thanks!
For sure. More Jack coming soon!
Jack reminds me of a mix of T Bone Walker & Wes Montgomery. Good call, thank you for having him on the show Brett!
Sure thing Stephen! Glad you liked it!
Daaamnnn! Bret - I am a longtime fan of your vids/channel etc. and have always enjoyed ALL of your content….THIS video lesson is sick…I’m just seeing it now for some reason, but it is packed with all kinds of great stuff. As much as Jack offers up a ton of excellent stuff, YOU do a really killer job of pulling a lot of the stuff out of him. The questions you ask are just perfect and provide so much insight. I think you and I sort of thjnk of music/guitar from a similar viewpoint & so i was stoked when you asked a lot of the questions you did 😁. Really, really great stuff man. Well done & thank you. ✌🏼
Thanks Matt! Jack is awesome and such a great teacher. Glad you liked the vid!
@@BrettPapa for sure! Glad to have found him (through you) I have since become a subscriber of his as well.
Sweet - Love Jack Ruch... Awesome! 🎆And - Love the 'Green Tara - Tanka'.
Me too Jack is the man! More Jack coming to the channel soon!
Great lesson!
More coming soon!
Everybody calls the D#dim the #4 diminished chord, but i think it functions as the I diminished, sagging and resolving to I. Great vid as always!
Thanks!
Smooth as velvet....Jack has the goods.
Yes he does!
really great lesson thanks
Glad you like it Neil!
Thanks for this Jedi Master lesson of Arpp and Dims in the blues. The Force is strong in this one...JR. My playing will expand as I translate into my electric blues slide guitar Aloha from Hawaii
Thanks for checking it out!
Awesome choice for THE show !!! :) i learned a bunch
Sweet! Glad you liked it Rafal!
I hope to Cod there isn't going to be a Quize later!? Ha! Jack's playing is Smooth as MAYONNAISE! Thanx for introducing us to all these Awesome musicians!!
Sure thing!
Much respect...
Thanks Michael! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful guitar and he had it talkin!
For sure! Thanks for watching David!
Thanks Brett, I love Jack Rucsh's playing, phrases to die for. You asked some great questions. They jogged out some deep and detailed explanations, stuff that tends to get glossed over in videos by guys who play first and teach as a fill-in. Their videos feature brilliant playing with gappy instruction. It's basically advertising for the paid lessons and courses. Nothing wrong with that, as Freud said: "if you don't pay you don't get better".
Thanks Rob. Yeah Jack really is something special. Such a great player. Awesome dude as well!
Such a great guitar player, well explained, I'm gonna work hard on those ideas, thanks a lot :D
For sure! Jach is awesome and such a great player!
Jack Ruch has the best explanation how to use diminished chord/ arpeggio (whatever you want to call it) for the 1-4 change. combine that with Josh smith "playing through the chord change" comment you finally know what that means. You finally answered what Robin Ford was going about 5 years ago.
Haha! Yeah Jack has a great way to explain things!
Jack you sir are one smooth customer 👌 😎. That is my kind of phrasing.
Haha! He sure is!
Great Lesson! this is prob the 5th time I am watching this video... everytime it makes more sense! Thanks man!
Also that amp in the back is now lying in RJ Ronquillo jam room :D
Jack is the man! Yep I sold it to RJ because I knew it would have a great home over there.
I wish I had a teacher like this guy.
He is great. Hit him up I think he gives private lessons.
Great lesson, smooth player..
Thanks for watching!
Great stuff
Thanks Vernon!
Great Lesson I am headed over to check out Jack's sites thanks Brett
Awesome Kelley! Thanks for watching!
24:23 is a lick from Grant’s Greenery. Great stuff.
A lot of work ahead ! 👍
I am sure it will pay off big!
Awesome !🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
Thanks! Glad ya liked it!
Hearing it is talent. Knowing it is discipline.
Yep
Whoa... forgot where I was in the zone with Jack! Let me get back to that... damn. Can I ever play like that?
Haha I ask myself that same question! Great player!
That tone
From toddler to olympic sprinter in
Haha! Jack is the man!
Wow!! Lovin this. Brett & Jack thanks for such a great explanation, very motivational, makes you want to go play all day trying to digest everything in this video. As you say... KILLER!!
What kind of guitar is Jack playing? Did some digging - Josh Williams Guitars Mockingbird with Tone Specific pups. Super nice.
Thanks! Yeah that guitar he has is great. His little rig sounds awesome!
@@BrettPapa What little rig does he have? I thought he was playing through your amp.
Kenny Burrell is another great resource for jazz guitarists playing the blues. He kills it
For sure!
Jack is THE coolest! Thank you for having him on! What amp was he playing through?
For sure! You know I forgot what he brought over. Some little combo that sounded great!
It's a Headstrong Lil King S
@@JackRuch Thanks so much for responding! Too cool! I'm so thankful for having discovering you here on RUclips! Both Brett and Michael Palmisano did great interviews with you. I can't wait to deep dive more into what other musical offerings you have.
Smooooooooooth!
For sure!
SWEET
Thanks man!
you rock bud
Thanks for watching!
That Jack is such a treasure of soft, soulful and expressive touch on the guitar. And I really love that chord progression. Can we get a tab or even a just simple chart of the chord progression (starting at around 4:20)? I really dig even just the chords.
Check out Jacks Patreon. He has all of that stuff there.
Sounds like Stormy Monday? Nice video.
Thanks for checking it out!
Mark Knopfler sharpens the root all the time in Dire Straits. Such a great sound.
Yep!
Jack Ruch is a bad man. Sound is familiar but so fresh!
For sure!
I love you man
Right back at ya!
Sorry if this has been covered before, but I was wondering what camera / mic you use for your vids? The picture and sound are great! Especially for what looks like a 1 person operation. Thanks!
Thanks! I use 2 or 3 Canon EOS R cameras depending on the shoot with the high end 24-70 RF lenses. However I plan on upgrading to the more cinema style cameras soon. I use a sennheiser shotgun and lav for the vocal audio blend the two and then process it in post.
Great just love this guy…, where can we get the backing track for the opener?
Me too! Check out his Patreon page it is probably there.
Interestingly, Mickey Baker used that diminished lick going from the 1 to the 4 chord in his 1950s Jazz Guitar book.
Yeah lots of people do it. Great sound!
It's funny how all these notes are simply sitting there but I can't access them I am trying though and Jack's playing makes me keep searching for these beautiful melodies
Yeah I agree. Jack's phrasing is amazing!!
A lot of teachers on youtube cannot articulate what they want to say contrary to the amazing guest you have on your show. Amazing stuff. Gonna grab my guitar after a days break and get to playing the blues. Btw thats a beautiful thanka ( Tibetan Painting ) that you have hidden in the background. Out of curiosity, are you a buddhist? Just asking.
Thanks! Glad you liked the vid! The painting was a Bday present from a dear friend. Not a Buddhist but I appreciate it all!
👍
Thanks!
Who should you listen if you want a feel of how to play in this style??? Crazy idea how about jck ruch
BRING. HIM. BACK!
There is another video on the way!
Can we get a link to that hollow body guitar ? I couldn’t find it in the info?
Maybe hit up Jack on Insta.
It’s a Josh Williams Mockingbird. joshwillliamsguitars.com
So we didn’t get to the end of that progression. I was waiting for the end of that progression. Dang
What is the make and model of the guitar ?
Not sure. Hit him up on his Instagram I am sure he would answer.
rythm parts are also beautifull
He is a great all around player!
Would love to know what guitar that is?
Hit him up on insta I'm sure he would tell you.

Hello Brett Papa. This is white Kirk Fletcher. Thank you.
What guitar have Jack Ruch?
Not sure. Hit him up on his channel or his Insta.
It's a Josh Williams Mockingbird
@@JackRuch thanks
Is this the progression?

28:06 great video
imho - visualizing is the wrong approach, it's a crutch and a hindrance to "hearing"
my .02 cents worth of internet dribble
People learn in different ways so we try to go over all approaches here. There is validity in all ways.
19:15 "hear the sonic shape" thinking fingering shape is antithetical to hearing
That backing track is super loud, can't hear Jack very well.
