At my level I find that when I'm playing in front the shuttle just goes over my head most of the time so I end up standing there and leaving most shots for my rear partner. Only occasionally am I able to intercept a shot at the front. Am I standing too far forward if I'm standing right behind the T?

You need to anticipate your position of your partner and thereby how close you should stand towards the net. If your opponent is in a deep position at the baseline, you should try and step a tiny step backwards covering more of the court as an example

If the shot is long over the fronts head, only two corners.front should be alert for drop/ slice shots at both the front corners...

when you say you commit to a side, does it mean that you cover the back corner of this side too? because if not, it would mean, that you leave all three remaining corner to your partner, which is a stretch I believe.

Really depends on the situation. Sometimes, yes cover 1 corner. Your partner covers 3… though with some anticipation it would normally be 2 corners. Also worst case, your partner moves for the 3rd corner and players a defensive shot.
Really depends on the situation here, but sometimes you need to risk it to win ☺️
