Honestly, if anything, death metal is in a very good state right now. The stuff coming out on just Unique Leaders and 20 Buck Spin alone are enough to keep the genre going, and going forward, for the next 15 years. That's to say nothing of bands like Creeping Death, Tomb Mould, and Gatecreeper who have one eye on the future on the genre BECAUSE they have one eye looking back to its rich history. And Tech Death is in the best state it's been in since around '04 or whenever it was that Necrophagist and Cephalic Carnage broke big. Abnormality, Rivers of Nihil, Psycroptic, Krosis, Cognitive, Revocation, Archspire, Obscura, need I say more? And how about the whole symphonic death metal thing that Sceptic Flesh and Fleshgod Apocalypse are doing? Chris is just upset that the genre has passed him by. And that Seth Putnam of Anal Cunt was always right and "Chris Barnes in a Pussy"

This does kind of add some sense to how he's behaving. He's hurt. By anyone and everyone in the scene, because they rejected him and made him feel invalid, unimportant, and ridiculous.
He's trying to hide that hurt with hate, and indifference, to the people who made him feel this way. As well as anyone else who could possibly make him feel that way in the future... "Screw em, I don't care about them OR what they think. Never did." Kind of a thing.
I can totally relate to this because I used to be like this.
      ...When I was effing fifteen.
So un-metal.... Chris Barnes has feelings, and they got hurted... So he ran away with his panties bunched up, and then used that bunch to blow his nose, and wipe away his delicate tears.
What a flower. Corpsegrinder would never get all bunched up and pull a "I HATE YOU! I HATE ALL OF YOU!!!!" clown ass move.
Chris needs to go back to doing what he does best....
      Sheltering animals.
      AND
Harboring the birth of.. sons of... Christian deities....
Along with all the other Barns!
Barns don't talk Chris! They just exist as inanimate structures!
....Barns are generally portrayed as being red though, so I guess that fits his little tantrum induced attitude quite well... Another reason!

Barnes came up in a time before there were really technique screamers/growlers. I think he probably just messed up his voice over the years. He did pretty much invent the lower than low subhuman vocal approach and way before the zen of screaming melissa cross thing and all the healthy vocals really were around. His vocal decline is sort of understandable to me, however the terrible music of six feet under is unforgivable. You could still have sick riffs. The SFU record with Robb from chimaira on it is pretty awesome. Definitely worth a listen.

After CC's new album I got back into them and heard most of the Discography from Corpse grinder's contributions and I will say Vile, Bloodthirst ,Gore obsessed, and The wretched spawn are fucking awesome . Now with SFU the only album I ever listened to and got into growing up was maximum violence. I just never listened to any other SFU until now . In the comments I read True Carnage he went back to his old growls so I had to find out and that album and Haunted are amazing hope I hate that word I would like on the next SFU they put out an AMAZING record and the it's like a revival of SFU that kicked ass kinda like what CC are in right now. Maybe Barnes can look into Melissa Cross etc like alot of metal vocalists do get his voice back get that fire lit and piss and vinegar boiling in SIX FEET UNDER like when they 1st started out . @C J B Welcome to the commodification of your childhood thanks to Reagan and his head of the FCC, Mark Fowler. In the late 60's it was made illegal to show advertisements for products marketed towards children during children's programming because of the "Pester Factor." Yep, there's a term for it. The person that can influence household decisions (where to eat, vacation, shop) is the one that won't shut the fuck about it AKA the Pest AKA children.
Mark Fowler changed that. Open the floodgates. Businesses could now market to children during their cartoons and then came He-Man. Toys were developed based on children's shows for ages (Topo Gigio for example) but He-Man changed the game. The show (1983) was so popular it boosted the sales of the toys (1981) and manufacturers took notice. Money that was generally pushed toward adult marketing campaigns now dumped it into children's toys.
Another product that followed in this same vein was Care Bears. The toys were modelled after a line of greeting cards. Initially they were successful but in 1985 a Care Bears cartoon was developed. Care Bears were stuffed down the throats of every parent.
Transformers. GoBots. Cabbage Patch Kids. Pound Puppies. My Little Pony. Polly Pocket and Mighty Max. G.I. Joe. Everything people hold sacred was designed to do nothing but take your money.
Now, ads are geared towards tribalism. RealTree Camo. Crocs. Carhartt. Lululemon. The Trump Store. The myriad of bootleg Obama shirts that fed untold families just prior to and for ten years after the 2008 election. The Thin Blue/Red/Gold/White Line. Hell, breast cancer and LGBTQ+ geared products are often priced higher than the same product without the branding.
I saw two guys strike up a conversation and cling to each other like best friends after going through security at the same time because they both had the same Tumi x McLaren International carryon bag. From that one bag they determined the other person was safe and were literally trying the sit next to each in first class where we all were seated.
I was wearing a Pig Destroyer shirt at Cleveland-Hopkins last week and saw another dude wearing a Whitechapel shirt. I gave him the slight nod. He beelined towards me. Tribalism.
On another note, whenever Cannibal Corpse comes through I get a guest pass and hang on the bus and side stage during the show. All I have to do is bring a bottle of bourbon from my buddy's shop that is specific to our AZ market. The power of being a Disney/Metal nerd.

Hey Finn I 100% agree. Find myself don't do a lot of social media nor do I try to be in the limelight I stay with a low profile I don't even have Facebook and only Instagram I rarely ever make post on RUclips videos but you pretty much hit the nail on the head with this video. When I saw the Chris Barnes circus going on in the media I couldn't help but think why would he blatantly come out and attack the entire scene. Obviously he's got issues and I think those issues have to do personally with George. But taking his personal issues out on the entire scene was uncalled for. He should realize his position in the scene as being one of the originators, and you're absolutely right he comes across as a bitter old man. It's sad when I see my peers who are clearly in their 40s and even 50s acting like junior high schoolers. I myself like I said don't actively promote new bands but there are many great new bands out there that should not be ignored.
And yes right now they're sort of is a Resurgence of this old school style sound and that should be something that people like Chris Barnes should be proud of not s******* on.

  • @onetracklife

He's not saying it in black and white, but what he means and what his issue is, is that the scene isn't full of scumbags and unrepentant assholes anymore. Trevor, Jasta. Chase, etc, are all great guys with progressive mentalities. That's Barnes' issue: he wants to remain scumbag extraordinar and corner the market on edge lord behavior. Death metal is established and doesn't create a "reaction" anymore, and that's his issue. Mic drop.

I love early SFU. There were definitely traces of this on early albums though. I'm going to bet it's a combination of bad "posture" when it comes to vocals and smoking. There's been a lot of advancements in how we understand growling and screaming "safely" and it basically all happened after Chris. And Chris might be one of the biggest potheads in metal 🤣 so add 30+ years of habitual smoking with "bad" technique, and I am not surprised at all that it's been slowly degrading...

You can even hear some of that "bad sound" of vocals in their first track The Enemy Inside on Haunted. Some other good early examples: 4:20 and "Revenge of the Zombie" from Warpath and "Feasting on the Blood of the Insane" and "This Graveyard Earth" from Maximum Carnage. It used to be an "accent" used to like compliment his normal growling, but it's kind of switched over time.

Should've done like all the other old school death people, and learned how to do it without shredding up your entire vocal anatomy. If nothing else, he's a great example of what not to do. Really sad to see his decline over the years.

I don’t get why so many people need to be negative about music in general-you can certainly have opinions but making blanket statements like that is just stupid. Often it means someone isn’t really trying to listen to the new stuff.

Chris's work was phenomenal, I think he's just sorta bitter about everything still. Also I think his voice is gone, I don't think he's taken the best care of himself over the years. Much respect to him still for what he was.

Chris Barnes looks and acts exactly like that one friend from high school that never did anything but smoke weed all day. He just never grew up. Like, dude, there's so much more to life than striving to be a burnout. Barnes is close to, if not already in, his 60's. The wacky tobaccy isn't a fountain of youth.
He drank the Kool-Aid and is a Florida Man. I feel so sad. It's like idolizing Jared from Subway in 1998 and then fast forwarding to 2010ish.
On the bright side, he would make the absolute perfect Marcus Kane if the upcoming Twisted Metal TV series would hire him.

I understand what happened to Chris Barnes' vocals because it happened to mine too. I used to be a really brutal, sick death metal singer. But after like 20 years, my voice just broke down in a very similar way to Barnes'.

I like the comment “I thought you guys were into music”. It’s so true, so many of these people like music, or do they like feeling like they did when they heard the music when they were young? It’s awesome how you have keep up with new music, and I hope to do the same in a few years, not just reliving high school.

I remember digging Six Feet Under when I was in middle school. They were part of the groovier side of death metal (like World Demise-era Obituary). They went downhill pretty fast, though. And Barnes' vocals remind me of crusty, old wiener dogs who try to bark all loud but sound like they're hawking up phlegm.

This reminds me so of a situation when I was in a bar wearing a Meshuggah shirt. This older guy (who is heavily into Iron Maiden) I knew came up to me. and asked "Why are you promoting nu-metal with that shirt?". I ofcourse explained that Meshuggah is not nu-metal. But for him al the new (Meshuggah was actually not that new... but hey...) bands where the same. He started ask me question of older bands like "who is the singer of Iron Maiden, who is the guitar player of Pantera" (he seemed to like them), and a bunch more question which I could all answer, because I am well educated when it comes to old and new stuff. He was frustrated about it, and thought it was interesting to smash a glas of beer in my face. Really... some fans...

I agree, I like SFU, everything they' ve done, but that's not cool to slag new bands like that, especially killer ones like Gatecreeper. I'm gonna turn 50 in a few days and I do like a lot of new bands. Lot of them are into old-school stuff and sound just right. Some modern stuff I dig, some I don't, but why talk shit? I just ignore the stuff I don't like and concentrate on the one I do, that's all.

I think in Chris Barnes case it goes beyond old school vs new school. This roundtable had Corpsegrinder, who not only successfully replaced Chris Barnes, but also just released a successful solo album. Corpsegrinder is well liked and has been for awhile. People have forgotten about Barnes for many years now and this little tirade is most relevant he's been since Graveyard Classics 2 in 2004. I still remember the sad interview Chris Barnes did immediately after getting fired from Cannibal Corpse in 1995. It's a very sad MTV interview on Headbangers Ball that was supposed to be about a new side project called Six Feet Under, which during the interview Barnes announced that would be his primary band and then he got asked about being fired. It was super sad and awkward and I felt bad for Barnes. Bottom line Chris Barnes never got over being fired from Cannibal Corpse and while he continues to decline, things keep looking up for Corpsegrinder. It's really sad. If Glen Benton were on that roundtable instead of Corpsegrinder, I doubt Barnes would have even watched it, let alone commented.

The Rick Ta Life of Death Metal.
Also I think a big part of the DM resurgence right now is that it has a lot of hc influence. Gatecreeper opened for Knocked Loose. 200 Stab Wounds played Pain of Truth, God’s Hate, and Knocked Loose’s record release shows. Undeath, 200SW, and Phobophilic are playing LDB Fest. Kruelty played FYA Fest. Hardcore kids are dancing and two stepping to dm. It’s really riding the wave that hardcore has been on for the past couple of years.

He ain't making death metal and he put a snippet of a song in a video where he's reacting to an isolated part out of context yet he put a whole song for the other band. It's like the news today that's what they do take things out of context for a headline. I like Finn but he's not doing more for death metal until he makes his own album. listen to nightmares of the decomposed all the way through and give it a chance . Read the lyrics it's fucking dope man.

Relax brotha. My point is that as a 40 y.o. Death Metal fan, I grew up on bands like Corpse Barnes and other bands like Morbid Angel, Obituary, and Deicide...then I kinda grew out of it just like I grew out of Bullhead Jeans and Trucker Shirts. This videos, the songs, hell even the band names brought me back to a place I hadn't thought of in 20 years...it's a great place to be back to!

Sure its a bit of aging process and lots of smoking but maybe he just got bored with being just death metal singer like Chuck (Death) did, Opeth frontman did and many others did. He always sang with character not just something technical and he still does that. One of the best. What you hear as broken voice is just his present flavour (and former) . He is like death metal rapper. Cool then and cool now.

“Are they the most innovative original band in the world? Probably not.” I would disagree since they made Death Metal what it was, became and is. They have stayed the course and still deliver what their fans like to this day. They were so out there in the late 80s early 90s they shaped the scene, they took it to another level. Innovative? Take what was the thrashy beginnings of DM and make it heavy and gory AF- check. Original? Be the first to do it, take it to a worldwide scale, have tons of bands follow in your bloody footprints-check.

Barnes is amazing and many can't comprehend his genius and direction, you see, upon listening to all SFU and CC albums over the years you come to realize that regardless of the monstrous instrumentation, the quality of recording per studio the vocals and overall sound Barnes has produced, he has never been able to truly deliver the 100% true sound that he'd like you to hear, the music within his mind, same can be said with just about any artist but with Chris the instruments and the musicians required to produce this sound do not exist which would explain his frustrations in the 90s when they were getting big the quarrels and disagreements that CC had with Barnes where he wanted the band to keep on the controversial route by being raw and visceral more explicit lyrics and the like, the other members wanted to refine a more solid consistent sound that would be less abrasive to audiences ultimately they went the less abrasive route and Barnes went his own way with SFU where he could attempt to create the sound he wanted, his compositions are on another level and it'll probably take decades for people to finally hear it, and you can't blame him for being a bit salty when no one's able to relate to your direction
