Dana Ward interviewed Christopher Heyerdahl at the premiere of 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1' in Los Angeles. He talks about the Volturi and the Cullens, as well as the hair, makeup and costumes involved in the film. 'Breaking Dawn -- Part 1' opens in theaters November 18, 2011.

I hate it when people say the Volturi are evil. They're not. Without them,everything would be crazy,the humans would know about the vampires and eventually come up with a weapon to destroy them,and everybody would constantly be eating everybody. They just want to enforce very few laws and keep everybody safe.If th Cullens didn't break the laws,the Volturi would have no reason to step in and be seen as the "evil" guys. All Bella ever did was mope around,and beg o be a vampire. REAL heroic.

Late to reply I guess, but oh well.
The volturi aren’t evil. Edward himself says they aren’t the villains Bella and Jacob were thinking they are. They serve a role in the vampire world, and just happen to not reject a huge part of their nature.
And even if they *were*, which they’re not, Marcus would be no less guilty than the rest for the most part. There’s a complicated past that might make one inclined to call him “better” than the others, but by any standard calling them evil it wouldn’t be by much.
