How To Grow Anubias Emersed!! (FOR PROFIT!)

- In this video I show how to grow anubias emersed in my three dedicated emersed anubias setups by covering the substrate, lighting, misting, fertilizers, pruning, and temperature that maximizes the growth rate of my anubias plants. Anubias is a great plant to grow emersed if you want to get the fastest possible growth, which is necessary if you want to sell your extra plants for a little bit of profit.
By combining a setup like the ones revealed in this video with proper propagation techniques that I cover in this video: • Complete Guide On How ... you can start growing many anubias plants with very little effort and cost.

In this video I cover the following topics on how to grow anubias emersed!
Substrate: 1:45 Anubias plants do not require a special substrate to be grown emersed. I use black earth which can be bought very cheap at any garden center and the nutrients last a long time in these anubias emersed setups.
Misting: 3:35 The more you mist your anubias plant the better because it will keep the humidity high inside the tubs. You can reduce the amount you mist but as a rule of thumb it is best to ensure there is condensation on the sides of the tub.
Fertilizers: 4:35 I mix a few aquarium fertilizers that I have laying around into my spray bottle so that when I spray my plants it provides a small amount of nutrients. This is not an exact science and I just eyeball the amount of nutrients and I have never experience fertilizer burn on my plants although I would recommend not overdoing it when spraying your anubias plants with fertilizers.
Pruning: 7:30 Besides regularly propagating my anubias plants the only pruning that you need to do is removing old leaves if they start to turn yellow. A lot of the time this is normal and doesn't mean there is a nutrient deficiency but rather the plant is still adjusting to the new emersed setup. When you see this it is best to cut away the yellow leaf so that it does not block out the light for smaller plants.
Lighting: 8:09 I like to grow my anubias plants under full sunlight in my window. You don't need to worry about algae because they are being grown emersed so you can get away with using strong lighting to grow the anubias plants.
Temperature: 8:45 My emersed anubias setups are being grown in the ambient temperature of my room. This sits around 70 F (~21 C) which is a little bit on the cooler side as anubias can be grown in warmer temperatures. Generally you will see much faster growth if you grow your anubias plants in a warmer environment and I have also noticed that you will have a higher tendency for your anubias plants to flower.

👍 keep it up... You will get more then what you bargain for...thanks 🙂🙂🙂
In other circumstances Nitrogen is good for growth, phosphorus is for flowering... is that not the case with aquatic plants..?
I really wish you had started with an empty tub and shown how you get the trimmings and how you plant them. Thanks for the video's
Ever try hydroponic nutrients like General hydroponics?
This is one of the best channels I've found with concise information without all the bullshit talk that isn't required. Keep up the great work. Thanks for the info and ill try these methods out for myself.
Wow very nice anubias❤
I'm actually very surprised because I've seen many emersed anubias setups with contradictory instructions, the only instruction shared by all people being that anubias should NOT be planted in soil as it would kill them, yet your setup is by far the most luxuriant results.
very usefull, thanks pro
Thanks for watching!
How many did you start off with?
Is the rhizomes buried into the dirt or stay on top? Curious...
pls start posting again
my lobsters eat anubias every now and then so they never get the chance to grow big but im gonna try this pretty soon then to see how it goes :D
Nice video, but as a plant lover you should maybe show that ponytail palm some love. DON'T put in an aquarium, but give it some of that nice fertiliser and remove the dead leaves. I can almost hear it begging for some attention.
I watched your video some weeks back and was hesitant to do something like this. Fast forward 3 weeks later, I have now 4 plastic containers of both A. Nana and Nana Petite. These were mostly from 2 driftwoods that had overgrown Anubias. Mine is not planted as dense as yours. Yes, they are growing, in fact one plant even flowered! Thank you for sharing.
I really like how you explain things in a simple and fluid manner :) I have started an emersed setup for anubias like yours. Thanks a lot.
Enjoyed this video a great deal. The setups you're rolling with are very simplistic but work extremely well. I may try this in the future as ive run out of space for tanks. Thank you for the upload 👍
I really appreciate your videos because you speak well and do not stumble through your presentations. Your directions are clear, concise and presented in a clear manner.
Have you ever tried to propagate Vallisneria in this way?
I'm proud of you bro keep up the good work people are noticing your excellent content, and you're helping a lot of people along the way hope you got something special on your 500 Subs because it's coming😎
Bro thanks for those kind words! Haha looks like you were right about the 500 subs, I think I'll have to plan something for 1000 for sure! Have any ideas?
Good job man. I discovered your channel yesterday, and videos with tips to propagate this kind of plants are Just what guys in this hobby are searching for.
Greetings from France !
This channel is amazing, you explain everything so well and don’t go into unnecessary detail. Keep up the good work and don’t burn yourself out making these videos. By far the best channel I’ve found for a beginner like me.
👍🏻
One of the nicest comments I've ever received! Thank you so much for checking out my channel Hassib, glad you enjoy my videos! I'll try my best to not get burnt out, I have so many plans/video I want to film, it's hard to imagine myself burning out anytime soon! 😀

This was well explained and edited. Loved every minute of it.
Thanks Aqua Apprentice! That means a lot man!
omg.. mixing aquarium plant ferts in with the water in a spray bottle.. omg brilliant.. why haven't i found this channel before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Haha thank you! Glad you enjoyed that tip! Thanks for watching!😀👍
You should actually wait with removing the yellowing leaves until the plant has taken out everything it wants. It has reasons why the plant decided to take nutrition out of the leaf and transport it somewhere else. Therefore it is always a good idea to let the plants just do their thing. The nutrition absorbed is a bigger advantage then the disadvantage of shading other greener leaves.
Otherwise it is not always the best idea to mix fertilizers together and keep them mixed for a longer period of time. Especially when the light can hit the liquid. You should always mix up a fresh portion and use an opaque bottle so that the fertilizers dont react with each other and the sunlight.
I really enjoying your channel and already adapted some of your techniques as well.
I got hold of some 'petites' and am trying this on a much smaller scale. Your vid on dividing them up was really helpful.
That's awesome, good luck! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
You've inspired me to start an Anubias tub...………...Great video, well presented. Subbed :)
EXCELLENT INFO, thanks.
I set an emersed setup up my self after watching one of your videos on this topic
Although it hasn't really had time to make that much progress regarding plant growth I still enjoy it every time I spray it down
Thx for the idea and great videos :)
I was also inspired to do the same with a bunch of baby plants.
I'm glad I was able to inspire you to try it out. Hopefully the plants are just adjusting and they will start growing for you soon! Thanks for watching! 😀👍
Great video man! Ty for the information!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! 😀

How do you plant the rhizomes in or on the soil
Good Movie❗️
Very useful video. Does this also work with Bucephalandras?
wow!
Thanks for watching man! 👊😀
Nice vid/ new sub here
Hey Jordan great content love the videos. Could you do a video showing how you set up and start a tub. Do you plant the rhizomes into the dirt?
Thanks for watching Kyle! Glad you like the videos! I do have a video on setting up one of these tubs but I can make a more detailed and specific one for planting anubias, in short I just lay the rhizome on the soil, I find that is a good way to stimulate the rhizome to send down new roots into the soil 👍😀
should i add a saran wrap lid and a light?
Hi, i have one container setup but no cover on the top of it, is it ok to leave their leaves dry? But i constantly keep the substrate submerged for a couple centimeters.
Nice video and channel ... I really like this video compliments .... nice work....like#420
Hey bro cool video. Fyi if you wanna fertilize for cheap just buy some normal garden variety liquid fertilizer or even powder from your local big box store. Save your expensive aquarium ferts for your actual submerged tanks.
Thanks for watching Richard! I cant believe I didn't even think about that lol that would be a much better way to fertilize these plants, thanks for that! 😂👌
Hiya Wid - I am a details person and this was just perfect! Your anubias look fantastic :) You really have this nailed down! I may have missed this detail but where did you get the initial plants? There are so many! Are there a couple of large mother plants that you trim from to get all of these? How long does it take for a box to get full like this - or are you packing a ton of plants and cutting in the box? I will check other videos to see - if there a couple of specific ones in addition to the links that you can point me to, that would be great! I really loved this!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! 😀 Yeah it seems like I forgot to mention that detail, I might have mentioned it in a past video but I can't remember! I essentially grew all this anubias from a few initial plants years ago throughout my years of doing planted aquariums. It wasn't until I really started doing emersed setups and propagating my plants that I got so many plants though. I don't really have a good answer for how long it would take to fill a tub like this but I'm hoping to do some tests in the future to figure out an average growth rate (I'm a nerd I cant help it) 😂
do you sell some of your plants? amazing video by the way!
Will it take long to get many if I used 1? In my tanks they are very slow growing
There was this very shallow plastic tote in lowes I saw it I can get ppl who seem interested in buying stuff I'll buy it and a set of grow lights the tote was rather large so I plan to do , pearl weed, subwassertang, monte carlo, pennywort, dwarf sag, anubis and java fern
Thank you so much for this. One question though, how do you plant the Anubias? Do you just lay the rhizome on top of the soil? Or bury it a little bit?
Can you grow water Sprite emersed ? I really enjoy your videos your a great teacher?
Thank you for your knowledge
Bruce
Thanks for that Bruce! Yes, water sprite actually does really well emersed and has a pretty interesting leaf structure when grown emersed too! I currently don't have any in my collection but I should pick some up next time I come across it! haha 😀👍
Super, like, Hello from Russia )
I'm definitely gonna have to start my own set up now
Have you ever had to deal with mold growing inside your tubs? I know thats an issue that can happen with dry starts. Also how easily does anubias and java fern convert to their submersed form? Do they experience much melting or anything like that?
do you have they in direct sunlight? mines are getting yellow =/
hi, thanks a lot, great informative video, can you tell me if the lid should be on all the time or?
Hi i still hope to get an answer, thanks
Enjoyed the video but can you make another showing how your takibg everything apart and cutting it to sell?
Thanks for watching Ben! For sure I can make that video, I'm planning on cutting and dividing up these tubs soon, so I can make that video happen!
kool
Thanks for watching man! 👊😀
Thats a strong fert mix
Hi, great video..I posted this same question under other one of your videos : "can you bury the rhizome of Anubias when planting it in soil for emersed grow?" .. that's because most YTB videos about Nanas talk how you are never suppose to do that in Aquarium but I find it hard to plant them in the regular soil without planting the rhizome , too.. what say you the expert?!
Can coconut husk grow anubias and java fern?
Do you put plastic lids on the setups?
Hi, nice video. I've been not so lucky with anubias nana. All my newly bought anubias nana melted and died. I've put them in my aquarium and after a few days the rhizome melted. Do you know what is causing this? Do they like soft water?
Thank you! I'm sorry you had that experience with anubias! I'm not sure what could have happened, they can grow in a wide range of conditions so I don't think it has to do with the water not being soft enough for them. Is it possible the rhizome was damaged or the plant was accidentally dried out prior to going in your aquarium?
Update!!! Pls ❤️
Awesome video per usual. Where, have you, sold them? Is it possible to buy them from you? Shared, liked. Thanks for the information. Great content.
Thanks Caylor's Aquatics! I have only really sold them locally to me, I'm from Canada so I haven't put too much time researching the best shipping methods but maybe one day it will be possible to ship plants. For now it's nice helping local hobbyists get into aquarium plants! 😀 Thanks for watching and sharing around that means a lot! 👍
Do you close the lid on those container ? all day?
Hows the desktop aquarium doing?
How do you plant them on soil? Rizome will rot if they planted in soil...plz give sugesstion about plantation process
You plant them by putting the Rizome on top of the soil and light press it into it without it getting buried. That way it will not rot. It will only rot if you put it IN the earth. You can actually use substrate like lava rock that is so coarse that the plant wont get buried even if you overdo it on the watering.
Hi again, how do I prevent fungal growth in this set up? Have you ever encounter it?
Hey Hamizan, I generally don't have a lot of fungal growth in these set ups. After a little while you will start to see some small critters growing such as spring tails and if you start having fungal growth these critters will help control it. If it gets really bad you can try raising the water above the soil and leaving it like that until the fungus dies back then draining the water back down. Hope that helps!
Hi, can you grow java fern in the same way?; If you have any video for growing Java fern please share link of the video. TIA
did you plant the anubias directly ob top of the soil?
I have some anubias gigantea, not doing so well in my fish tanks. I've read this plant grows better emersed. I have them glued to lava rock. Can I just take the rocks place them in a bowl so that the water is covering the roots?
Hey Andrew, that will probably work but you will have to add some fertilizers in the bowl of water (if you aren't planning on using soil) for the anubias and also it is important that the leaves don't dry out so if the bowl is large enough to keep a lid on it to retain the humidity that would be best! Good luck! 😀
Hello Widquatics, I have a question about your emerged anubias. What kind of soil do you used??
Hey Rorro! The soil I use is called "black earth topsoil" but any organic soil will work fine for you!😀👍Thanks for watching
@@Widquatics thank you so much for your attention and help, I appreciate it very much my amigo! 😉 I have some garden eart I hope that will work good for my first emersed plants. Greetings from Mexico City, and I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks for your video. Your emersed plants have mod amounts of lighting & mod amounts of fertilizer. If you moved these to a low light aquarium without supplemental fertilizer would these plants die??? Thanks For Your Time: Shawn
Awesome Video Thanks for sharing FishFam NJAE19
Thanks V. Stag! You're the honorary hype man for the aquatic experience! 😀👊
So if I were to remove my anubias from my tank and start to grow them out of water, will they melt back and regrow well? And if I were to submerse some big bunches off of the emersed mother plant, would they melt back and regrow well when submersed?
Do they only flower out of water? And what is the light cycle to get them to flower, what kinda plant is that in the background? Thanks for sharing
I I wonder if I can put the rizhome inside of the soil
Keep the rhizome above the soil. It's need to be in light or it will eventually die. Photosynthesis happens in the rhizome.
Hi. Very good content. Im going to set up an emersed anubias... How do you plant them? Do you just let the rhizome on top of the soil?
Hey Hamizan, thanks for watching! You are right, just set the rhizome on top of the soil (you can press it down a bit if you want but don't cover it) and it will quickly form roots down in the soil! Good luck with your emersed anubias, let me know if you have any other questions! 😀👍
Can bucephalandra grow in the same way too?
How fast exactly does it grow emmersed? I am setting up a new 55g in the next few months. How much time does it take to grow a baby into a viable plant and is there any die back with these or Java fern when you move the plants into an aquarium?
Hey thanks for watching Andrew! It's hard to say how fast they grow, I'm going to do some tests when I propagate these plants to track how fast they grow but I would guess each plant grows around one new leaf every 1-2 weeks. I wish I took some pictures when I set these tubs up so I could compare to get a better idea. As for die back when converting to submerged I usually don't get any with anubias and you can sometimes get some with java fern but I find the higher you keep the humidity and the more misting you do the better they convert. Hope that helps
I have been a little concerned with making sure mosquitoes do not breed in an outside immersed tub. It looks like your soil is damp but does not have pools in which mosquitoes can grow. You also mention that we can use saran wrap which should prevent mosquitoes from getting in. I currently keep aquariums outside, but I have fish in them to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in them.
How quick does it grow?
So if you grow, say, Anubias emerged, isn’t there die-off when you put em in a tank? If so, how significant is it? Or is this a non-issue?
You are good..just keep it up...
Hoping that you get more subscribers in future...well done ...
Thanks for that Muhammad! Your support is much appreciated! 😀👍
doesnt the plant melt for all your customers once they plant them submerged?
Great information are you going to start selling them?
Thanks for watching Larry! I occasionally sell them to people locally to me, but due to the fact they grow so slow and I live in Canada it's not the easiest for me to sell a lot of them. That being said, it seems like anubias is in high demand (at least where I'm from) so there is definitely money to be made with setups like these! 😀
Hey any updates on the growth rates? :D
Need one for buce, there are so exspensive
Yeah! I'm planning on getting some buce soon!
Is black earth peat moss?
Hey thanks for watching Robert! I don't think so, it's a type of topsoil I believe
Can you apply your liquid fertilizer to your terrestrial plant on the window ? It looks quite sad.
Hi buddy! How you doing? I really need some help with the Bucephalandra.. I met a guy who sells bucephalandra of purple variety.. Can you help me making a video on it? Do bucephalandra need iron, potassium dosing? Can the normal green variety grown without any dosage? Like anubias? My anubias are doing good without and CO2 or mineral dosage.. Just good lighting.. Can help asap? reply to this also helps!
Thanks buddy!
Flowering is based on light cycle photo period .
Don't add phosphate and micro/iron into the same bottle. They'll form insoluble salt that the plant can't use.
I didn't know that! Thanks for the tip, my plants thank you! 😂👍
The question is where do you get so many plants to start with?
your channel is growing pretty fast, isn't it?
watch out or you'll hit 500 subs friday
Thanks, and you were right hit 500 this morning! 😀
@@Widquatics thats only fair for you buddy, I hope you hit 1k soon!
Probably compacted roots and not enough nitrogen is the cause of chlorosis in your plants.
