He simply is not the Duke of earlier games, not even the comics and other expanded material that give him proper personality and all. Fun fact, in Saints Row 2, which lets you create male and female characters, you canonically play as the same character as Saints Row 1, which only let you create male characters, and to explain why it's basically impossible for the two to look identical, there's a story beat in the beginning that your character got reconstructive surgery. So literally, all female characters in 2 have canonically had sexual reassignment surgery. The best part is the other characters from the first game come across as very supportive if you're reading it as a trans narrative, there's a common gag where they will say "You look different, do something to your hair?" and just never mention it again, no matter what character you roll with

A lot of modern games try to shove a lot of microtransactions and suffer from a lot of stuff involving late-stage capitalism of having to pay more for less as well as other rent-seeking behavior. i would argue that red dead 2 especially does a great job of using the classic masculine cowboy character to portray a positive character. Not only does he help the Women's suffrage movement, as well as standing up for his black and hispanic comrades he also fought for the native Americans and the whole 3rd act is about him grappling with his past and trying to do as much good as he can before he dies. And you get the bad ending if you avoid doing good. Red dead 2 is woke in the best way IMO

To be fair, and I love Duke Nukem 64, I don't think the games are trying to satirise Duke at all. There's no pushback and he gets everything he wants and saves the day.
They eventually stopped lampshading Duke's macho nonsense, but that is literally why Duke was made. I realize that there isn't going to be some kind of pushback in a 90's 3D Realms series, but to pretend Duke's existence and purpose isn't to be a parody of the hyper masculinity of 80's action movies (in the same way that Lo Wang was a parody of kung fu movies) is just missing the point of why he was made. The film adaption of Starship Troopers is kind of a perfect example of this, since there is no direct pushback against the fascist future in the film even if it is a satire of (hypothetical American) fascism, and at the end of the movie the main character gets what he wanted at the start of the film and it's one of the bleakest endings possible.

Its funny that guy brings up Duke Nukem, because while he is thought of as a sexist and misogynist, this is mostly due to the limitation of Duke Nuke 3D, and it seems that even the devs later on did not get that he was supposed to be the Arnie of video games, who did one-liners left and right, but who was described by the official guide book as "a Lifeguard, there to save you when things go south" and who is also described as respecting woman. I mean, in the console games, he gets orders by a female general, and he never even questions that. Also, Duke Nukem never was meant to be a ultra serious franchise anyway, the whole concept is bordering on parody anyway. Also, the reason games are bad now has nothing to do with inclusivity or female devs, it has all to do with Capitalism and its never ending greed for monetization. Games are now full of loot boxes, microtransactions and are "Life services" games, that are nothing but giant open world sand boxes, devoid of anything substantial, so you can squeeze more money out of the players by endless slob content that you have to pay for, and that on top of the 80 Dollars you need to churn out for it and then the game is full of bugs, and you have to wait for it all to be fixed.

It is clear, that due to the long dev time and turn around of people working on it, that 3D Realms no longer understood their own creation and simply tried date Frat Boy humor, and it also explains the jarring tonal deafness it sometimes has. catb0mb made a great video about that and under fans, the DNF Duke is often called "Douche Nukem" for that very reason. He simply is not the Duke of earlier games, not even the comics and other expanded material that give him proper personality and all. If I got my way in doing a Duke game, I would make it a reconstruction of Duke and have the bad guy behind everything "Douche Nukem" and would explain that the DNF Duke was a doppelgänger from another dimension or something. It's especially funny to me that this guy said "the men are men, and the women are women" in regards to Saints Row. Fun fact, in Saints Row 2, which lets you create male and female characters, you canonically play as the same character as Saints Row 1, which only let you create male characters, and to explain why it's basically impossible for the two to look identical, there's a story beat in the beginning that your character got reconstructive surgery. So literally, all female characters in 2 have canonically had sexual reassignment surgery.
The best part is the other characters from the first game come across as very supportive if you're reading it as a trans narrative, there's a common gag where they will say "You look different, do something to your hair?" and just never mention it again, no matter what character you roll with

A lot of modern games try to shove a lot of microtransactions and suffer from a lot of stuff involving late-stage capitalism of having to pay more for less as well as other rent-seeking behavior. Older games are still fondly remembered because they are fun, and don't feel like you are getting nickel-and-dimed by some big corporation who will underpay their staff and laugh all the way to the bank.
This is in no small part because of the rise of mobile gaming, sadly. Everyone can see how much money gacha makes, especially in East Asia... we joke about whales in the US, but all the ultimate whales are in China/Korea/Japan. That's one of the worst trends in the 21st century so far; basically gambling in video game form.

I'm not surprised that there are fewer incentives to make other stuff if you can just sell this forever. In Japan mobile gaming basically killed game sales for anything that isn't a first-party Nintendo game, Dragon Quest and a couple random games every now and then. That's unfortunate, but also explains why Sony 'left' Japan.

i would argue that red dead 2 especially does a great job of using the classic masculine cowboy character to portray a positive character. Not only does he help the Women's suffrage movement, as well as standing up for his black and hispanic comrades he also fought for the native Americans and the whole 3rd act is about him grappling with his past and trying to do as much good as he can before he dies.
