Of the ones I’ve read the best is Pillars or the Earth. I enjoyed Swan Song but if you’ve read The Stand before you’ll just end up comparing.
It was going to be JV Jones as I enjoyed her earlier works back in the day but then you held up Swan Song so now it has to be that.
I have under the dome on my shelf and it makes me nervous too. Dark theory sounds really cool too
Empire of the Vampire, only because Mark of the long-abandoned Slowly Red booktube channel said it was violent, bloody, dark and excellent. I really liked his recommendations and trust his judgement.
My vote is Swan Song. It is a beautiful story, with some very memorable characters. It's a top 5 favorite for me, and I liked it even more than Boy's Life (which I genuinely adored). I totally understand the intimidation with huge books though. I've aimed to change that this year, as I just finished Shogun last month. It also ended up being a Top 5 read for me. I'm currently reading The Pillars of the Earth, and it's very promising so far. I hope you end up enjoying whatever you choose!
Now that you’re saying it, you’re absolutely right with Ken Follett. That book was so popular for such a long time in Germany 🤣 but only book one. I didn’t even know it was a series till I saw it somewhere in the US.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on Dark Theory. That cover is gorgeous 😍
Stephen King has been calling to me as well, i think ite been maybe 2 years (?) since i last read a King book. That's far too long if you ask me.
I need to get back to Pillars of the Earth, yeah the male gaze was weird as hell, dude just lost his spouse and already making the moves on another woman.
Only JV Jones I've tried was the Book of Words trilogy, and the pacing was ridiculously fast, like I know weeks/months is supposed to have passed but it didn't feel like it. The opening for that series was messed up, context warning: sexual assault of an unconscious woman.
A Storm of Swords is brilliant.
I haven't even read Shogun yet. Malazan kinda burnt me out on tomes for a while, but I'm thinking I'm back.
Andrew, on my knees, I'm begging you to go back to Pillars of the Earth and try it again. It's my #1 book of all time. That doesn't mean you will love it, but there is an epic emotional journey waiting for you inside.
If you read the first chapter and wimp out due to the size, you could always start a "books to work out with challenge" and build up those forearms muscles :)
Not sticking the landing after that much of a commitment would bug me to no end. One reason I wait for reviews on King books. And I'm not big on a main POV being an unloyal husband or womanizer either.
Dark Theory is the one that peeks my interest the most, but it's a tough call between most of them!
For me, I'd say either Swan Song or Under the Dome
I would love to say that I urge you to push past the opening of Pillars as ultimately Tom is not the main character, he is a primary viewpoint character for a decent chunk, but it does start shifting away from him after about 25% through. However if his male gazeness was already bothering you, then there are definitely other things with the way women are treated, rather viciously, that while historically probably fairly accurate, is harder to read today than it was when the book was written. There is one scene in particular that made the villain in the book my most hated villain that I've read. So it was effective, just not the easiest thing to read, major SA content warnings. I loved the book, but I don't think it is for everybody.
I've been thinking the past week or so that I need to get back to King. I realized that while I have been reading King since the late 80's, I have finished surprisingly few of his books. I have read part of alot of them, including Under the Dome, but I have finished only 13, and that includes the 6 volumes of The Green Mile because that is how I read it, one book a month for six months when it came out. I feel like I should be able to say I've read all of King, and that is so far from the reality.
I think if you are hoping Swan Song comes out on top then you already have your answer, and you love Robert McCammon so I feel like that one is a pretty good bet for you. I have read zero Robert McCammon, definitely a blind spot for me in horror, though I own probably half or better of his books.
Swan Song!!!!!
I'm planning to read either IT or 11/22/63 this year... Or both. But the longest book I've read has been about 600 pages. I'm scared...
Empire of the vampire SLAPS. It IS dark, but I'm. telling you, it's so worth it, even with the curse words. I know it matters to a lot of people, but sometimes you just blast on. through!
Swan Sing, much the same... well worth pushing through!
haha my view on big books is so jaded by this genre. I start thinking of books being chunky at 1000+ pages😂 Similarly I keep being surprised that not all books of 300 pages or less are novella's 😅. As for Pillars of the Earth, I consumed it on audio a few months back and it was a great experience. Perhaps that will help you climb that mountain.
I would say if you're hoping for Swan Song then it should be the one and I'm good with that. It's on my tbr as well.
However Under the Dome and Dark Theory piqued my interest......
I'm actually currently reading Swan Song! Pretty great read so far, and I'm about 700 pages in
I'm just going to sit over here, cross my fingers and pray that you like EotV. I am unsure if you'll love it but I think it's amazing. (I also love Nevernight, so there's that. )
Under the Dome is most similar in style to the Stand!! I liked the ending, the same ending found in a twilight zone & star trek episode.
Storm of Swords is amazing! The tv show dropped one of the storylines from this book and that was a big mistake!!!!
Swan Song is amazing!!
I'd vote for Tai Pan. I loved Shogun, but the other books and their length scare me.
I say you scratch your next Stephen King itch with Swan Song
lol 😂 but King didn’t write Swan Song
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads I know that but it's similar to The Stand, so a Stephen King like novel
Tai-Pan is an absolutely magnificent read, if anything I think I enjoyed it slightly more than Shogun ....
A Storm of Swords is my favorite book ever.
Stephen King is my favorite author. Under the Dome is definitely not his best, but still very good and worth reading. I think it’s underrated.
I’d start with those, but, you said you don’t want dark right now. I wouldn’t call either of those lighthearted reads.
I feel like I have like 50 chunky books bullying me 😭🤣 but I’m stuck in my Stormlight reread lolol
I need to start my stormlight reread!
I vote Swan Song. Stay Magical.
Jv Jones for sure
I'm in 100% agreement on your measurement of chunky or not! I've got a handful of classic King still waiting on my shelves as well. I recently read Dark Theory with the SPSFC-3 and rather enjoyed it personally. I need to begin the books of A Song of Ice and Fire. I too watched the show before getting to reading it. There is always that issue of the series not being completed 13 years after the last one was released now. Empire of the Vampire is slated for October this year for me! My most recent thick book was another one that's been lingering on my shelf. The Name of the Wind. Again another incomplete series.... lol
I have been wanting to check out Dark Theory since I first heard about it! I am glad to hear you enjoyed it
So I’ve got a funny feeling Swan Song will win because people LOVE that book (it’s fun) but I’m going to go with Empire of the Vampire; it’s epic, it’s dark, it’s pacy, man it’s great.
Swan song was very popular! I’m planning empire of the vampire here soon
Really would recommend Storm of Swords, ASOIOF is definitely worth finishing off even if we probably will never get the completed story, failing that A Cavern of Black Ice or The Trials of Ildarwood for me
I will def eventually return to ASOIAF
I’d say Under the Dome or Empire of the Vampire! I haven’t read either but I’m interested in your thoughts
Thanks Hannah!
Chonky books have such an aesthetically pleasing shape 😂, like bricks! Solid. But ouch, my wrists just watching this video 🫠🥰
LOL some of those books are heavy!
Either Under the Dome or Storm of Swords. I really enjoyed both of them.
The only problem I have with Swan Song is that it is too short 😅. I love this book so much, more than the Stand and it was my Book of the Year in 2023. Never felt too long,I flew through it.
To short you say….
Swan song and the storm of swords
Oooooh yeeeess, Empire of the Vampire please and thank you!! Hope you enjoy all of these when you give them a shot. Big books are both a blessing and a curse hahaha
Im reading it next month!
Have you read Needful Things or Lonesome Dove? Sorry, new to the channel, but those are some of my favorite chonkers
I LOVE Needful things
Bastion is FANTASTIC you gotta start it trust me you’ll fly through those pages
This is what I like to hear :)
Dark Theory sounds great. Plus, I haven't heard anyone talk about it at all. You'll be a trailblazer.
Thanks Rogue! I’m excited to give it a go
I was disappointed in Under the Dome. It was underwhelming.
Well darn...
Dark Theory! Definitely added to my TBR
It sounds so cool!!!!
I vote Empire but only because it's been sitting on my shelf as well for some time
That is fair!
Troegs! Love the Perpetual IPA
I have to drive two hours and cross state lines to get it. One of my favorite breweries hands down Troeganator, nimble giant, mad elf are amazing drinks
Those are some big ones. Haven't read any so can't say which to prioritize from that perspective. But I do like Swan Song's cover art, so my vote's for that one 😂
Very promising list!
Storm of Swords is amazing. I highly recommend it!
I have heard very good things about Pillars of the Earth. Hope to get to it eventually. Same with Empire of the Vampire and Swan Song.
I had never heard of Bastion before. There's another book for the massive TBR pile!
The only books from this list that I've read are Storm of Swords and Empire of the Vampire. I thought Empire was excellent, but not sure how you would feel about it. I really need to read Swan Song and Pillars of the Earth. My mom bought me the whole Pillars of the Earth series in hardcover for Christmas, and I still haven't started it.
Those are some thick books for sure. I've heard good things about Empire of the Vampire. I ought to give it a read.
I NFNed Swan Song... just kept reminding me of how much I want to re-read The Stand 😅
Stop mocking me , tbr books. Same 😂
lol 😂 you get it
REVENGE OF THE CHONKER
So much revenge
Hi 👋 great 👍 books!!! 📚
Thanks Safina!
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching
Did you steal mikes book reviews backdrop?
What do you mean?
Short answer is no
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads you have the same stuff on your shelves
@@treyg8148 we read similar books :) before I started my channel I got a lot of recommendations from Mike
Empire of the vampire!!!! It is literally 50% interview with a vampire and 50% the Witcher so so good
Which Witcher…first few books or later books lol 😅
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads I’ve only read the first 3 and then didn’t pick back up, I forget what I got busy with lol so the old books I didn’t even know they were still writing to be honest
The Pillars of Earth I loved but I was also put off by Tom, good thing he is not the main character and that the book focus mostly on the next generation. However, I dnfed the next one, World Without end after not even 100 pages : main character was like "I love my girlfriend so much" and then cheated on her immediately and THAT was supposed to be the big lovestory of the book, nope !
A Storm of Swords ❤❤❤ but i get it I really dislike book Tyrion, I don't get why the character is so popular, his attitude towards women is repulsive.
Empire of the Vampire was a immediate DnF for me : too vulgar and edgy, I couldn't take it seriously. Lots of eyerolls. And I heard not good thing about how Kristoff writes women.
We seem to have similar opinions! I’m still planning on trying empire but I don’t have high hopes
Tai pan was so good!!! ❤
