For those wondering: spontaneous lactation, in those who have not had a child (and yes, this includes men), is most commonly caused by medications such as Risperidone, antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, or birth control. These medications can cause elevated prolactin levels in the blood. Despite the name, prolactin is a hormone associated with a wide variety of functions, and is even found in fish, which obviously don't produce milk. It impacts tissue growth, cell differentiation, and even controlled cell removal. You may be starting to realize why endocrinology is a major medical field - dozens of hormones, each with dozens to hundreds of seemingly unrelated functions, and most of which also affect other hormones.
Absent any obvious medication cause, the most likely causes are hypothyroidism and benign pituitary tumors. However, it can also because by more serious conditions affecting the liver or kidneys.
Medically, it's referred to as Galactorrhea. So while it certainly *can* just happen, it's not especially common. A doctor should be informed as soon as possible, to either adjust the medication or find the underlying cause.
