  • One major problem with the Lalo Salamanca character from Better Call Saul. Spoilers through season 6. Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
    Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) is a character that was only mentioned once in Breaking Bad. He came in and shook things up in Better Call Saul at the end of Season 4, and we don't believe he can survive season 6. He's currently heading for a showdown with Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and he's looking for revenge.
    Lalo has become a fan-favorite character. He's much more dynamic than the other Salamancas and much more likable. He's also a cold-blooded killer, so he's the perfect mix of charm and menace. Since Better Call Saul is a prequel we know Gus will survive the confrontation, so what does that mean for Eduardo Salamanca?
    Let us know your Lalo theories for Season 6. We believe that Lalo Salamanca must die, and it could happen soon.
    Better Call Saul’s final season concludes the complicated journey and transformation of its compromised hero, Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), into criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. From the cartel to the courthouse, from Albuquerque to Omaha, season six tracks Jimmy, Saul and Gene as well as Jimmy’s complex relationship with Kim (Rhea Seehorn), who is in the midst of her own existential crisis. Meanwhile, Mike (Jonathan Banks), Gus (Giancarlo Esposito), Nacho (Michael Mando) and Lalo (Tony Dalton) are locked into a game of cat and mouse with mortal stakes.

    I think Lalo is a perfect villian for the series he incorporates the most terifying elements of all the past villians, the cold calculating nature of gus, the unpredictability and brutality of Tuco the blood for blood mentality of Hector even the brains and the luck of Heisenberg and Tony Dalton just plays him perfectly

    • @fangrowls6336

      He also has a human and empatic side which he uses to get close to people.
      No one else in the series has this trait besides saul and only the saul we see in better call saul.
      Lalo is so good and has so many qualities its like, why isnt he the big boss of everything.
      Imagine being so gifted in so many areas of life. You would actually have to try hard to not have success in life with such a persona.

      What up Pete, appreciate the vid per usual.
      Like virtually everyone who has become enthralled by this series, I absolutely adore, respect and fear Lalo-and have many times been reminded sharply why in the course of a single episode since he arrived onscreen.
      I just read a comment concerning the fact that he is almost a touch too perfect of a villain, ie the scenes of the last two episodes which found him traipsing about Germany like a Mexican James Bond/assassin or something. While I also have leaned into that kind of thinking recently, I have learned to let it go, like I had to with other scenes/scenarios over the course of BB and BCS. The bottom line is that this show has become peak entertainment...the last two seasons especially are straight up cinematic in form and if you had someone over who had never seen this show and they were to watch ten minutes of several scenes in any of the first 5 eps so far in season 6, they would wonder how the fuck they hadn’t heard about the incredible film you were watching.
      I could go on and I probably will after another one of your vids, but my reason for writing is this: there will be a Mexican standoff and I would be shocked if it didn’t happen at the lab. Lalo is leaving Germany with all the info on it that he needs, the lab represents the real start of Walter White’s downfall and eventually Gus’ as well, and while Gillian and crew have kept a lot of what is about to go down hidden, for some reason ‘they keep giving out info slowly but surely that Lalo is on the fucking prowl to that one spot.
      Lab or not, whenever and wherever the final showdown between Gus and Lalo and whomever else is involved occurs, it is going to be television that will be talked about for many years.
      Lalo dies in another perfectly done, No Country for Old Men style sequence that will no doubt be directed by Vince. People that hate on Lalo for being a touch unrealistic miss the entire point of this show. He is a perfectly cast character in a series that is flooded with them and they deliver some of the best scenes in modern television history (maybe just overall TV history actually) That’s it from me...

    I think the thing that REALLY seals Lalo's death for me is the fact that we've seen how vindictive he is. He's absolutely smart and capable enough to survive well past everybody else in the series without too much trouble. It's the fact that he hates Gus so much he is incapable of leaving him alone. He would NEVER be on the sidelines throughout Breaking Bad never directly influencing anything or showing up abruptly to ambush Gus at the worst possible time. Gus would never be able to walk around in public like he does in BB, or be as composed as he is, and half the characters would never have made it as far as they did in that show. I mean can you imagine Walt dealing with him instead of Tuco? Or him recognizing the twins were being lured into a trap and either helping them and killing Hank or avoiding the trap altogether? Or being at Don Eladio's when Gus enacted his revenge? He's too much of a thorn in Gus' side and too determined, crafty, and bloodthirsty to still be alive and not an active part of the story in BB. I think it makes sense for Saul to still be scared of him because Saul barely knows anything at all about the cartel or Gus (he didn't even know in BB that Mike worked for him). So he'd probably never get an update that Lalo was dead and even if he did he ALREADY thought that and well... after episode 7 you can see how even thinking you know for a fact someone is dead that they can come back to haunt you.

    • @MLennholm
      @MLennholm 2 года назад +14

      Exactly! If Lalo managed to actually fool Gus into thinking he was dead, which we've already seen isn't easy, he would use that opportunity to enact his revenge as soon as possible. But since they're all dead and (the twins are hired help and where on gods green earth were they when Lalos compound was threatened), Hector is screwed, the Salamanca storyline would be horrible. Lalo he's an idiot, no protection (1 guy with a gun??) or cameras at his compound. Wexler would be a much smarter idea, tons more avenues to go while writing, even if you back yourself in a corner... and she's hot to look at, js.

    Great video, I think he will ultimately be defeated by Gus, but I think it's too straightforward to assume it will happen in the superlab. The writers have set up this expectation that Gus is creating this trap for Lalo to fall into, something which I don't think will go fully to plan. I think we will definitely see scenes with Lalo and Saul and Kim again, I don't think it's as simple as Lalo is drawn into the lab and Gus / Mike kills him. There should still be a few more episodes before this comes to a conclusion, ending the cartel side of the BCS storyline setting up Gus and Mike's characters in Breaking Bad.

    There are a bunch of things to figure out here:
    1. How do we explain Saul's lines about Nacho and Lalo in "Breaking Bad"? Obviously, Saul knows that there is something he may have done to incur Lalo's wrath and he knows that Nacho had done something on that front as well. If Lalo is dead, why would Saul still be afraid of him? One potential reason is that Lalo might have a countdown system in place (much like Walt's bogus threat to the Schwartzes in "Breaking Bad") if Saul fails to do something for him.
    2. The most endearing thing about Lalo is his love for his family. Like Nacho, he might be willing to die or at least back down on getting revenge if he thinks any of his family members might be in danger. Tuco and Hector are both in very vulnerable positions (Tuco is in prison and could very easily get assassinated by a gang not unlike Jack Welker's, and Hector is crippled and living alone in a nursing home).
    3. I believe Juan Bolsa is a key factor in everything. We know him mostly as a middleman and peacemaker between Gus and the cartel, but we've also seen a duplicitous side to him: he hired assassins to kill Saul in the dessert, so he wouldn't be able to bail Lalo out from jail. I doubt that that was a plan sanctioned by Don Eladio, and I'm not surprised that Gus didn't rat Bolsa out. Gus might hate Bolsa for his role in Max's death, but he's still the person in the cartel with whom he has the friendliest relationship (Bolsa called Gus a good earner), and he will need him down the line. Bolsa already allowed Gus to start hiring local suppliers, and Gus might even preempitvely introduce him to the meth lab to get approval from him and Eladio (the potential profits for that would be huge for the Cartel), and that would render Lalo's video to Eladio useless. Lalo would no longer have a case against Gus, since Nacho's confession destroyed everything else.
    4. The Salamancas tend to be a thorn in everyone's side. Hector is stubborn, Tuco is violent and unpredictable, the Cousins have the capacity to disregard official orders if those orders conflict with their thirst for vengeance, and even Lalo has been a pain in Bolsa's neck for killing Fred at Travel Wire. At some point, any good favor the Salamanca name has with Eladio might burn out, and he might okay killing Lalo and then relegate Tuco to being a low-level meth distributor in New Mexico.
    5. Given Saul's reluctance to work for Lalo in Season 5, why would he offer to work with Walter in "Breaking Bad"? Yes, when Saul first met him, Walt was still not visibly the psychopathic kingpin he would one day be seen as, but Saul clearly prefers to deal with low-level criminals, and Walt, while not a kingpin then, was someone who very clearly would be working with dangerous people like Gus. The reason Saul would do this is because he desperately needs money for something, but what? Maybe he is arranging to send money to Kim to keep her safe in whatever place she is in during the "BB" timeline? Or maybe Lalo is still alive and is having Jimmy carry out some kind of errand in exchange for his and Kim's safety?
    I know I haven't offered any concrete answers here, but these are the main things I'm trying to figure out here.

    • @kartist2455
      @kartist2455 2 года назад +1

      1. I think Lalo might not die before Saul's eyes. Since Lalo just came back from the dead once, Saul never trusts that he is dead again. A doubt remains that he might come back like he came back in S6E7.

    Lalo Salamanca fans have the same problem that Khaleesi/Mother of Dragons fans had on Game of Thrones. What was supposed to be a compelling, supporting character became foremost in some people's minds and hearts, and they want them to 'steal the show'. Am I going crazy??? After a final panic he finally accepts it. Lalo is dead and gone. He restarts the lab to bury Howard. Years pass. Lalo plays the long game. Whatever move Lalo makes against Gus, it’s so smart Gus never knows it’s him. OR, Lalo finally makes his move AFTER the BB “last salamanca” scene. Gus visits Hector again and vows to finish Lalo. Hector blows up Gus to save his nephew.

    I can see Gus torturing Lalo. The stolen fruit story is a perfect representation of Lalo. I'd argue more so than Hector.
    Quoting the story,
    "...... So I waited, for hours, into the night. When my brothers called for me, I did not answer. I didn't make a sound. I was so still. Finally, it came out. It knew I was there, but it was hungry. This time, I was ready. I caught it. It fought me, but I was stronger. The merciful thing would've been to kill it. I kept it. It lived for quite some time. "
    This is foreshadowing the confrontation between Gus and Lalo. He will capture him inside Lab. Then proceed to torture him.
    "into the night" This foreshadowing the lights being cut.
    "When my brothers called for me, I did not answer. I didn't make a sound. I was so still. Finally, it came out. " He will wait down in the Lab, alone. While Mike is trying to warn him that Lalo is coming.
    " It knew I was there, but it was hungry. This time, I was ready. I caught it. It fought me, but I was stronger." This foreshadows a violent confrontation between the two.
    "The merciful thing would've been to kill it. I kept it. It lived for quite some time." This foreshadows Gus torturing and then killing Lalo (I assume before the end of the series for closure on the Lalo)
    Gus is sadistic. He hates the Salamanca's. And Lalo is a bigger threat than Hector ever was. No one has been outside of Gus' control than Lalo. And Gus will make him pay for that. This is personal for Gus and he will capture Lalo alone.

    I think the show’s timeline will advance to the first season of the BB timeline in the second half of the season. Lalo will either survive until then or die before the show skips ahead. In order for Gus’ plan for the cartel to work out, he needs to take action against all members of the Salamancas one by one immediately after Lalo dies so nobody figures out it was him that was behind everything that has happened to Lalo at first.

    Nice, after watching the season finale you'll get your answer. I love how Breaking Bad sets up events and characters in the past. I also love how in Better Call Saul we get to see Jimmy's interactions with Lalo and how he has made such a lasting impression on him. He'd been told that Lalo has died only for him to suddenly show up in the middle of the night on his doorstep with violent intent, of course he would be scared shitless. Its as if a ghost had just come to light, which is also how the recent episodes has been treating Lalo, a man of the shadows. On another note, Nacho was an incredibly complex character, he managed to deal and survive most of the Salamancas, many times due to his special circumstances with Fring and his father, Nacho played his character in the grand scheme of things well. His outing was shocking to say the least, but made sense as he likely thought of his father in those final moments and what he could do to protect him. Michael Mando is an incredible actor, and the writers are just as amazing in highlighting his performance.

    I agree with most of the points of the video, and yes, Lalo must die. However, I still can't really understand why would Saul still be so afraid of him years later. If Lalo dies, Mike would surely just comfort Kim and let her know that he is no longer a problem. It would be extremely uncharacteristic of Mike to let her live in fear forever.
    The writers can't just ignore the Saul line from breaking bad, because the entire show is based on it. I'm really interested to see how they figure it out.

    • @Ryan88881
      @Ryan88881 2 года назад

      Exactly. This has been sort of pestering me because why would Lalo die with Gus's and Mike's knowledge but with Mike not telling Jimmy eventually? And I can't imagine Gus would keep Lalo's death a secret from Mike. Maybe Jimmy after finding out Lalo faked his death once before already, will just always have it in the back of his mind now that maybe he just faked his death a second time? So even if Lalo really does die maybe part of Jimmy wont fully believe it 100%.
      The other part is how does Jimmy find out it was Nacho that betrayed Lalo. Because from what I remember he doesn't know that part yet. It may be as simple as Mike just telling Jimmy flat out what happened that night but both of these things I mentioned will have to be addressed with very specific dialogue; for example Jimmy saying something to Kim or Mike like "he faked his death once already so maybe he did it again" and/or "it will always be in the back of my mind that maybe he's still out there".

    Nacho was shot, threatened, fathers life threatened, for two seasons, then, we have the depressing last meal, where Mike then has to beat him up. All of this after they made us care about him, really he was the main guy left on the show you rooted for. Then he kills himself.
    I still don't understand how anyone felt that was satisfying in the least. He pretty much got the worst ending out of anyone, and was tortured the most.

      It’s al symbolic… sure he gets beats and all but it proves his loyalty to Gus’s side and on a little side note, proves he’s not a little bitch. Anyway like you said, nacho had no control over his life and never got what he wants for multiple seasons so for him to veer off the plan to what Gus told him-which was to run and for victor to kill him, makes sense as he is now going out the way he wants. He doesn’t want to get shot by some Salamanca or Bolsa or by anyone so him shooting himself means he goes out the way he wants. Also him giving up his life for his dad also serves as a redemption ark aswell. It’s a perfect ending too because you already know he’s gana die so the writers thought “hmm how can we build tension”…” oh we let the viewer know he’s gana die from the beginning” that way for the entirety of the episode you wonder and worry what will happen until the final moment. This represents nachos thoughts aswell. Imagine someone told you in the morning you were gana die at the end of the day. Your mind is going to wonder and worry until the final moments happen. And if you were still let down by him because of what he went though…maybe that’s the point. the point being that the cartel doesn’t mess around and that you’re actions have consequences. I think if I can dissect that much from one episode in 5 minutes then the character is top tier. Thanks for reading.
