Meet the Sydney-siders singing sea shanties

- Each Monday dozens of young Australians (and some old salts) meet to sing shanties that evoke Australia’s seafaring history.
But for the Redfern Shanty Club it’s not the idea of being aboard the First Fleet, a pirate pursuing plunder, or a whaler chasing Moby-Dick that’s alluring. It’s the camaraderie that keeps bringing them back.
The Redfern Shanty Club are group karaoke singers, they teach anyone at The Dock bar in Redfern how to sing along to the chorus of each song before they start. It's not a performance to watch on a stage, It's one to join in on while standing in a circle.
None of the attendees here sail. One worked as a deckhand on Sydney Ferries. Here it doesn’t matter whether you’re lyrically inclined, musically talentless or tone deaf. Hitting the right note is irrelevant.
