- This Outdoor Theater Changed Everything
Outdoor holiday entertainment season is finally here, so I helped turn my parents' backyard into an outdoor movie theater with a #DIY outdoor projection screen to host our upcoming family parties! This was a super fun project that only took a few days to complete!
For this project, I used The Home Depot App's Paint Calculator to calculate how much stain was required for the outdoor theater wall as well as the Augmented Reality feature to help visualize furniture in the space! I also tried the new ProjectColor app to help pick a color scheme for the new décor!

My wife and I along with a couple of friends went camping and we set up a white table cloth with a projector. We had an outdoor movie night next to our campfire. It was perfect. Then I see this video. Perfect timing lol. Love your parents backyard.

Sam, first, I teared up because you are so lovely to your parents. This is a perfect project for them.
Second - a quick question. I am always hesitant at putting pressure treated lumber through my table saw due to the chemicals in the wood gumming up the saw. I spent a lot of cash on the Sawstop saw and fancy blade. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks
They’re the best for letting me build all the things in their home. The lumber I used wasn’t really wet and I cut them on bypass mode - worked well!

I have to admit, I was not aware that Home Depot even sold electronics such as your projector. I guess it’s the mentality of immediately thinking of places such as Best Buy for electronics. It just never occurred to me that they sell much more at Home Depot than just lumber! Lol. Beautiful job on that backyard.

Yo Yo Yo!!!! If you threw out that Japanese Maple we are no longer friends!! But... I'm confident you guys planted all those plants else where in the yard. Pa Dukes freakin kills me Man!! I can relate. Go to HD for a utility knife, leave with shrubs. Go to HD for some 2 cycle oil, leave with shrubs!!! Nice project & it all goes together so nicely. This is a great project and I want to do it. How do you protect the screen and projector from the outside elements?
Thank you! Everything is removable, so the screen and the projector gets stored inside when we are not using them.
That actually looked like a pretty easy project (meaning even I could probably do that, lol). It looks great! I wish our backyard was bigger ☹️😁

You can totally do it! Not only was the so easy, it only took a weekend to do!

I'm curios on the screen size. How big it is and also it looks 4:3, why that aspect ratio and not 16:9?

Since the projector plugs into my laptop, we just use that on Bluetooth to a speaker. 😊
Plain blue t-shirt, camo cargo shorts, white tube socks with a healthy amount of bunching, and some white New Balances.

Cool project, but a 4:3 screen is bad for movies and doest
give a theater vibe. 16:9 would be much better (2.40:1 better but hard to find/cheap projector arent that format).
Thanks - honestly, hasn’t been bad at all! The projector has adjustable options for watching.
I love this channel and this looks great, but I have to comment on this one. You did so much right in this video that I hate to be that asshole, but movies and videos aren't perfect square anymore. With this build you'll be just fine, get a better screen that fits into a 16:9 ratio, but if you had built the backdrop to fit this screen it just wouldn't really work out well.
Not trying to hate just commenting to help people who may try something similar. Make sure your screen ratio is the same as your projector.
I hear you, but I just designed around what my parents wanted, and this was what they wanted. The projector has multiple options to adjust for screen size, ratio, and whatever else they need for a successful movie night. The screen is also not permanent and can be changed out super easily. Just wanted to give my parents the project they asked for. They’re happy, so that’s all that really matters. 💓
