Union Minded I’m 45 little over wieght what’s my chances of getting trained for a job at the local 11 union in San Fernando ca.. you think I can make it
I'm hoping mine goes as quickly as your did, I applied 2 weeks ago and the lady said sometime in January for my test (so two more weeksish), but I have yet to hear back for a date.
Thank you for the advice. I have my test coming up in a month and I have been studying like crazy. If I ace the test and the interview goes well but i do not have electrical experience do you think I have a chance to get in? I'm 19 and have my CDL with about 8 months of driving experience and was a laborer in the pipeline for a couple short jobs. Thanks for the feedback.
Electrical experience is not a requirement. In fact I would contend that if it were me I would prefer a green apprentice with zero experience. Reason being that you are a blank slate and haven't picked up any bad habits yet.
I'm currently taking electrical technology certification at my local accredited community College. After I finish would any of that transfer over to the IBEW ? Or how does that work when I apply for an apprenticeship? Sorry if this is a dumb question im new to this but I really enjoy what I'm learning so far.
It's not a dumb question at all. You would need to contact the local jatc which runs the apprenticeship program for an accurate answer though. What I will say is that it will be helpful in understanding the material you will be learning in theory class.
@@bryanherincx3844 Id say stay patient and stay busy in the meantime, honestly nothing against the sound and comm guys but inside wireman apprenticeship is the way to go. Better pay, better skills, and better benefits, more opportunity to grow.

Would I have to join the apprenticeship program and start off from the bottom ? Wish I new somebody here in San Antonio with some knowledge about this
Experience plays a role in how you're classified. The route you choose to become a journeyman is either apprenticeship or the upgrade program. There are requirements either way. The local near you can better answer those questions.
@union minded you mentioned going into the interview with a clean haircut, I have long hair for personal reasons and was wondering if that will be an issue?
i took my interview a week ago and got ranked 2nd, and today got bumped down to 4th. how long should i be expecting to wait to get accepted? i know work is slow right now but i was told they still accept new apprentices even if work is slow. any info on this?
Hey man i’m 17 i’ll be 18 later this month. I was planning to become a apprentice instead of going to Line School. So would that be me “signing the books” as a ground man? And then just randomly getting calls for work every once in a while or would this be a full time job because i’m seeing so much stuff that’s it’s starting to confuse me 😂. Thanks man i appreciate it!
Apprenticeship is a full time job and classes. This all happens when you're accepted into the program. Some locals will put you to work as a helper while you're going through the application process if they have a sufficient amount of work. Once you start classes though you're gainfully employed throughout apprenticeship as long as you keep your scores up and you show up to work everyday and give 8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay.
If I want to join my local (26 for me), and already have my journeyman license and OSHA 10, what would they typically do in that situation? Do they pay the full journeyman wage or would they probably try to place me in the apprenticeship as a 3rd or 4th yr? Or just tell me to go kick rocks? 😂
Union Minded great. Thanks for the reply. I’m going to give it a go at some point soon here. I really believe in the training and safety that is offered. It’s usually way above what’s offered non-union from what I’ve seen.
I went through the application process in local 26 and also local 349 and both locals had the same process. I can't speak for every single local but I can say they're similar.
It’s not like college where you stay on campus. These apprenticeships are 3-5 years depending on where you are and exactly what specialty you are in (inside wireman, residential wireman, outside lineman, etc). Most of the apprenticeship will actually be on the job training. Usually you go to class one day per week and you get paid for classroom time just like you get paid on a typical work day. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will take a journeyman exam to get your license.
I live in NorCal can anyone send me the correct website or link for the application there’s like 5 sites I just wanna makes sure I’m applying to the right thing
Local is now looking for people with experience and did not tell me until after I went through the whole application and interview process. Unprofessional much?

Experience is not one of the requirements for apprenticeship. When I joined I didn't know anything about the trade. I was a security guard. I wasn't even a good security guard. Lol.
hey i was wondering if i went to become an apprenticeship for 5 years to become an electrician (journeyman ) after i’m done and i get a certificate will i be able to get a job after i’m done with the 5 years and i get my certificate or would i have to attend a trade school or college to continue this career
Apprenticeship is the trade school. You will upon graduation carry a yellow ticket which will allow you to work in any local across the country. You will have the knowledge to be able to sit for any state journeyman license test to become state certified.
Hey how is the test scores is it a combined score of math and reading I felt I did so so on math but amazing on reading will my reading make up for Th at pls and thank you
Couldn't say how all unions did, but at ibew26 because of our majority of work we were minimally affected. But there are ups and downs in any industry and unemployment us a possibility. So we typically save a rainy day fund. Tge reason we are able to do this is because of our higher wages and benefits. It behooves anyone to be in a union rather than not.
The cdl may have helped with a particular job but getting organized in is how we grow our membership numbers. There are many avenues into the union. Find the one that works for you. Reach out to the local representing your area.
eric could you please elaborate more about the interview part i already past the test and i will have my interview in about 2 weeks please what questions i will be asked
You will be asked why you want to join? You'll be asked to give an example of a time you failed and what you took away from that failure? You'll be asked if you prefer to work alone or in a group? These are some that I remember from my interview all of those years ago.
@@unionminded7918 thanks i really appreciated , on the question what do you prefer to work alone or in a group which answer is the right one ?? or should i say both
Can't really say what is the right answer or what's the wrong answer. I can tell you what I said, I said both because it's TRUE for me. I can work alone and I can work in a group and either way I'm fine. But that's me. I answered all of their questions honestly. Didn't try to make myself into what I thought they wanted me to be. I hope that makes sense.
My husband applied months ago and has not heard anything do you have any recommendations on how to email to look more interested and eager to work for IBEW
I always tell people, if it feels like it's been too long, call the hall and ask about your status. Squeaky wheels get the grease as they say. Hope this helps.
When you're in front of the whole Board it's important to remain calm. Take your time. Think about your answers. Look the person asking the question in they eyes. Speak confidently when you answer, but show humility and an earnestness to be a part of the IBEW.
@@DavidSmith-hc2xu it set me back years. I was a third year apprentice in Miami, moved to NY and was not allowed in to finish my apprenticeship. When I finally moved to virginia I had to start from square 1. So it was really a set back and a half.

It's a free country but you will be tested prior to being accepted into the program and before starting any job. From application to interview can take weeks. Be patient but if it seems like it's been a while and you haven't heard anything, there is nothing wrong with a phone call to find out what your status is.
Union Minded ok cool, one more thing, how does one go about for vacation in the IBEW? I’ve seen some talk about a piece of their check that goes into their vacation fund and others just take unpaid time off? I just want to make sure vacations aren’t frowned upon.
@@invincible794 there is an old saying about taking time off. "Whatever you can afford." Basically save up for the time you want to take off. Give notice and have a good time. I have always given as much notice as possible.
It can take a few weeks if you think word should have gotten back to you then my suggestion would be to call the local that you applied to. That way you get your answer directly from the union. Good luck.

@@unionminded7918 thank you I appreciate the reply.
Thank you I have test for apprenticeship program but how about HVACR program bro? HVACR math test also same like electrician like algebra?
Anyone else not get the aptitude test? but they’ve had online interviews and are scheduled for in person interviews already?
I put in my application i have my test coming along. Im going to pass. I will try my best
Good luck bro!
IBEW LOCAL 11 LOS ANGELES Journeyman Inside Wireman HERE!
What do you think about sound & comm program and Intelligent systems program. They're not accepting apps for Inside right now :(
@@bryanherincx3844 Id say stay patient and stay busy in the meantime, honestly nothing against the sound and comm guys but inside wireman apprenticeship is the way to go. Better pay, better skills, and better benefits, more opportunity to grow.
Yeah, ok
Appreciate this video, I’m waiting for the union to call me up for an interview, local 3 in nyc. any other advise you can recommended me that wasn’t mentioned in this video? Tips for the interview would be great my man. Thanks
My advice try to join 164 Jersey City NJ -- better than 3 . No commuting
Update???
Tomorrow will be a month ago that I’ve initially applied. When should I expect them to reach out?
When in doubt you should reach out!
Start my boot camp tomorrow
Lick some boots
How much some of you ogs making now a days ??? Trynna get some motivation
6 figures in some locals. That's all the motivation I ever needed.
Wish I did this 6 years ago . 6 years with a LLC company did a lot of new construction, rewires a lil bit of commercial … if I want to join my local union how would I be placed on the job skill if that’s makes sense .
So do you only take the drug test when you have been accepted into the apprenticeship or do you take one before your tests ?
Drug test before you're accepted into apprenticeship and prior to employment at the contractors discretion.
@union minded you mentioned going into the interview with a clean haircut, I have long hair for personal reasons and was wondering if that will be an issue?
No, just meant don't go in disheveled. You know what I mean? Comb your hair.
Just say you want to learn everything and work your balls off!
Thank you very much brother! Helps so much!!!
ok brah!
I just did my interview for ibew 112 and scored a 94.38% now I'm on a waiting list for 2 years. Honestly not sure if I should be depressed or hopeful.
Always hopeful. Work in the field for now and gain your skills. Be patient.
i took my interview a week ago and got ranked 2nd, and today got bumped down to 4th. how long should i be expecting to wait to get accepted? i know work is slow right now but i was told they still accept new apprentices even if work is slow. any info on this?
What local are we talking about?
@@unionminded7918 ibew local 46
Any call yet?
What's the hourly wage they start you off with? With or without experience?
I just applied two days ago. How long will I have to wait to hear back? Thanks
Thank you for the information sir
With a license they will have you test in. There is a competency type test for licensed electricians who wish to become union.
Union Minded great. Thanks for the reply. I’m going to give it a go at some point soon here. I really believe in the training and safety that is offered. It’s usually way above what’s offered non-union from what I’ve seen.
Is this video valid for all different posts across the country other than the one your in?
I went through the application process in local 26 and also local 349 and both locals had the same process. I can't speak for every single local but I can say they're similar.
After summiting the transcripts how long does it typically take for them to send you an email for testing date?
Not sure exactly, but it doesn't hurt to call over, and over, and over again!
Thanks for sharing this information
Great video, but how long is the initial apprenticeship class and do you have to stay on campus?
It’s not like college where you stay on campus. These apprenticeships are 3-5 years depending on where you are and exactly what specialty you are in (inside wireman, residential wireman, outside lineman, etc). Most of the apprenticeship will actually be on the job training. Usually you go to class one day per week and you get paid for classroom time just like you get paid on a typical work day. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will take a journeyman exam to get your license.
10 years
When is the next application available
Do they pick a random company. How does that work
Do you think 31 is to late to join the ibew? I’ve been with iuoe local 12 for awhile & it’s just not as fulfilling as it used to be.
No I don't think 31 is too late at all.
I got a letter saying I have an interview but I never took the Aptitude test.
ABDIEL PECINA Music same
Drop out!
I don’t have any experience whatsoever in construction. Is it realistic to think I have a chance at getting this apprenticeship?
Why not, I didn't have any experience. We need people!
I live in NorCal can anyone send me the correct website or link for the application there’s like 5 sites I just wanna makes sure I’m applying to the right thing
Local is now looking for people with experience and did not tell me until after I went through the whole application and interview process. Unprofessional much?
Wow. Which local is that? Yes, unprofessional like a motherf@#ker!
@@unionminded7918 479. I’m going to re-interview in 90 days. 450 hours of electrical construction experience was what the letter said might help get on. But I applied stating I had no experience 🙃
@@seanm8665 when I got into local 349 I had zero experience and was told it would not be a problem. This was way back in 98 though. Each local is a little different, and I speak from my experience. Keep at it, it'll be worth it in the long run.
Can u apply to a bunch of difference ibew apprenticeships or one and also I haven’t receive my diploma from my school I graduated last year from hs but due to corona was never able to pick up you think I can still apply?
Which question they ask you for the interview
No one can answer that
Is there gonna be any way to get study material?
How long after I submit my application do they request I take the test? I’m holding back on submitting the test
It's been about 4mo
Current HVAC/R apprentice but get offers from electrical companies sometimes. Am able to get electrical appren license i work with voltages up to 575V am ok at math but im 31 years old still have a couple years to finish HVACR apprenticeship..afterwards do you think it would still be worth it for me to make the jump at 33-34? Also my company is a mechanical and electrical contractor but I do service HVACR apprenticeship. Thanks for the advice
I totally think it's worth it. Whenever you can add skills to your tool box it's a good thing. Also it's never too late to earn more dough.
i dont have any previous experience. how big of a drawback will that be?
Is it likely to get accepted with no electrical experience?
What does hours look like? Whats the typical schedule?
7 to 6
good video and recommend listening to him. ..
Thank you bro! Appreciate the feedback!
Hey how is the test scores is it a combined score of math and reading I felt I did so so on math but amazing on reading will my reading make up for Th at pls and thank you
Yeah it's a combined score. Your reading excellency will lift your mediocre mathematics. Lol
How long do I have to wait after I apply to get scheduled for my test?
Have you took your test bro if so what local ?
How did the union do during the recession?
Couldn't say how all unions did, but at ibew26 because of our majority of work we were minimally affected. But there are ups and downs in any industry and unemployment us a possibility. So we typically save a rainy day fund. Tge reason we are able to do this is because of our higher wages and benefits. It behooves anyone to be in a union rather than not.
IBEW 611! What’s up fam!!!!
Bro I knew someone who joined the union as a groundsman with just a CDL and got organized in, wtf? How true is this for the rest of the locals?
The cdl may have helped with a particular job but getting organized in is how we grow our membership numbers. There are many avenues into the union. Find the one that works for you. Reach out to the local representing your area.
What if u failed at the interview? What will u do? Will they call u in for another interview for another year?
Follow up with the jatc and the local. Many times you can work while you re submit an application to interview again.
eric could you please elaborate more about the interview part i already past the test and i will have my interview in about 2 weeks please what questions i will be asked
What’s the starting pay a hour?
My husband applied months ago and has not heard anything do you have any recommendations on how to email to look more interested and eager to work for IBEW
I always tell people, if it feels like it's been too long, call the hall and ask about your status. Squeaky wheels get the grease as they say. Hope this helps.
I know they say a nice handshake is important but what about a situation with the whole board
When you're in front of the whole Board it's important to remain calm. Take your time. Think about your answers. Look the person asking the question in they eyes. Speak confidently when you answer, but show humility and an earnestness to be a part of the IBEW.
@@unionminded7918thanks! Took it yesterday i will let you know how it goes. Out of chicago here
@@paulf1245 that's great! Please give us an update when you find out. I hope the advise was useful!

In the ibew can you transfer to a different location
Yes but there is a process to do so. I made the mistake of trying to transfer without learning of the process and it didn't work in my favor.
@@unionminded7918 Oh shit really dawg. How bad was the hit.
@@DavidSmith-hc2xu it set me back years. I was a third year apprentice in Miami, moved to NY and was not allowed in to finish my apprenticeship. When I finally moved to virginia I had to start from square 1. So it was really a set back and a half.
@@unionminded7918 Damn dawg thats a real hurt piece. But, thats good to know you were able to rebound from it. and the intel dump you provide is really helpful brother, thanks a bunch.
@@DavidSmith-hc2xu you got it bro, if ever I can help I will. Be easy.
How long does it take usually for the application to go through and how much longer can I smoke weed
It's a free country but you will be tested prior to being accepted into the program and before starting any job. From application to interview can take weeks. Be patient but if it seems like it's been a while and you haven't heard anything, there is nothing wrong with a phone call to find out what your status is.
Would I be able to have medium length hair that’s braided? Or in a bun?
I don't see why not.
@@invincible794 ibew doesn't have paid vacations or holidays. just days you miss
It will help if your a MH first.

Hey man. I sent in my application but haven't recieved word on a test
It can take a few weeks if you think word should have gotten back to you then my suggestion would be to call the local that you applied to. That way you get your answer directly from the union. Good luck.
