Under three inches at 2.5 ounces is my kind of knife. However, I am not convinced that the overall quality matches the price given the issues. Still, it's an interesting piece and could become a gem if they can get it together.
I think you really hit your stride with this review. Can’t say that I’m surprised about the fit and finish. I’ve heard so many issues with many of their models in which they were sloppy. The designs are great but the production seems to miss the tolerances mark of Ray’s design. I was obsessing early 2020 about the EWC. Tried many times to get my “IN” in time on the IG lotteries, so to speak. I’m very glad I never succeeded, because over the course of several months I seem to be able to differentiate now the quality I personally demand. In other words, my tastes drastically changed. When you consider the high tolerances of Pro-Tech Malibu or the Demko AD20. I’m much happier with my latter purchases, and understanding what makes a truly great tool in the pocket. I’m sure MBK and Laconico have great designs, but the bar has been set high in 2020.
Have you been in contact with them in the last couple of months? I had a slight issue with my XLC and sent them a couple of emails but with no response. Their reddit account has also been dormant and I'm a little bit worried about them. They made a point to say they usually respond to emails within a day in previous reddit comments.
I need to stay off Reddit while I'm at work or I'll never get anything done. I miss going on there and chatting with you guys though! Sorry for missing your emails, I can explain! For a minute I had the main email address attached to the shipping service we use. Didn't think to switch emails or filter a billion tracking emails, but I'm way happy to fix the issue you have. Throw me an email info@montereybayknives.com or hit me up on IG.
Got mine today. The up-curve and rough cut CF turned me off. Did like the action. Glad I wasn't the only one to notice the up-curve and loose clip though.😂.
nice review! saved me the money on this one. lately your videos have been having some audio issues related to the mic peaking whenever you open a knife. your audio mixing seems to be a little off. maybe try mixing the audio a bit when you're editing?
I noticed the difference in CF compared with the EWC CF immediately out of the box. It was disappointing. Definitely doesn’t have the usual quality feel of a MBK. Other than that it’s a great knife.
The bad? As a lefty, there is no LH version. I personally wouldn't mind paying more of a premium for an item [knife, firearm, tool, etc] that is made for me to use. I've already acquired a LH PM2, and am looking at a true LH version of the CRK Sebenza 21.
Maybe Version 1.75 will have better quality materials, fit and finish, because you can buy a TRM Neutron for the same money, or buy the forthcoming marbled carbon fibre Civivi Elementum for 76.50.
This is a great design but really only makes sense for a US based knife geek or perhaps reviewer. The price, lack of give-a-dam assembly flaws and the problems that people seem to be having getting in touch with the maker to fix things means that if you live out of the US, you'd have to be happy to buy an almost kit knife (given you may need to take it to bits, lube it properly, tighten the clip & lock-tite the pivot) with effectively no warranty. Not sure you got the GEM status correct on this knife. The design, sure, I love it. But not the knife in the real world with your own $$$.
Pocket knife's prices are getting ridiculous by now...easier, faster and cheaper to make, allways going up on price to the consumer. It will not stop if we dont stop it. Is almost on the same level as smartphones by now :(
This dudes voice and his dry humor gets me through my day
Same here...
Dude...
I find his videos super therapeutic
Great, fair, thoughtful review, as always. But I hope you're planning an EZC 2.0 review as well!
I'd love to see this with a wire clip ala Spyderco. May not be great for the ergos, but it would look nice and carry a bit deeper.
Nick I'll never get tired of these reviews, you have any plans to look into the Kizer Genie?
Should be the eZC 2.718 that includes a watch strap tool that can be used as an Euler

I have this knife and like it a lot!
I just wish the cf and qc were a little bit better.
Great review!
Does anyone know it this knife is ever going to be available again? Website says "Sold out", but with these kind of knives you never know...

Micarta and 14c28n for a hundo?
Great video, can I request you do the Civivi Odium soon, and merry Christmas

Anyone know how the steel performance on these has been?
Mmmm that whip sound when the disclaimer slapped into frame.
How did you miss suggesting the eZC 2.718
Not even going to lie Nick, my initials are EZC, and I live in Monterey Bay. I think I'm going to look into this.
Love the review! I wanna pick one up once the figure out the handles. Wish they went with Micarta
Just bought mine with Micarta scales yesterday in their shop in Carmel. Can highly recommend it. Awesome knife!
Did You ever review the cold steel hold out III? I think it might be your speed in a lower price option.
I haven't seen him do much CS, I think it's the mall ninja connotations that come with the brand that keep him away, which I don't blame him for tbh

There's an unfilled market niche for combined knife-lights. Maybe there's a good reason it's unfilled.
That one M-Tech some jackass sent him has that filled.
the EWC a slipjoint? there's no "spring" keeping the blade from closing like in any regular slipjoint i know.
Technically it's a dual detent folder. its non-locking so it has the legality of a slipjoint, but the flippity clackity fidgetiness of a flipper
Absolutely love the EWC !
I had the same issue with the clip on my ewc.
Damn glad i watched this! The CF is a deal breaker 100%
I have one on its way.I hope the c f voids have been addressed. Thanks for another honest, frank review.
@@spiderdavis3296 Hope so for you! let us know!
If I send you a knife would you do a review on it.
The Demko AD 20.5 name is going to make Nick's head explode!
I really like Ray Laconico designs.
They averaged the 1 and 2

Oh my god nick the sqrt-1 IZC. you should patent that

Yikes those voids are bad. Been seeing a lot of carbon knives with that lately.
Agreed. Shavings off the CNC and lots of epoxy = particleboard CF :/ Junk.
Thats cool, my daughter gave me the Victorinox Classic space man knife. Little space dude in outer space, I guess where space dudes live?
Wish it had a wire clip!
You were awfully nice. That crummy CF and the fact it was filthy for $180 is a definite no go for me.
Thanks Nick, the fit a finish doesn’t amount to a 180 dollar knife. Close but no cigar.
This knife could be perfect if they spent the money and made it in the US.
Its the Lion King naming scheme
Caly 3.5 had a decimal before it was cool

I like it for $120
Glad to see Laconico STILL milking this design... EZC 1, EZC 1.5, EZC 2.0, EZC XL, EWC, Massdrop Keen, Kizer Yorkie...
I really dislike knives at this price point far from adequately assembled. The fit and finish isn't adequatelly either...
