The advice Jocko gives in his podcasts is great. I was the same for a period of time, always thinking of the pros and cons of doing things especially if it took me out of my comfort zone. But like he's said previously its best to just dive in on things you want to improve at. For me, I wanted to make a youtube channel but was worried about showing my face. But instead of trying to create one without the personalised touch, I just went for it. You live and learn!
Learn something you've never tried before, without asking for expert advice - just by playing around with the thing you're learning. Experiment more, so that you experience failure. Take cold showers, to get you accustomed to what is uncomfortable. Set out a goal of not eating what is familiar to you and instead choosing something you've never eaten before, maybe from a different different cuisine.
Make a decision and roll with it. If it isn't working out, make a new decision. I can try 8 different things while you are still trying to make your first decision.
I often do that, thinking all the posible solutions trying to find a perfect one, when i could have done an ok solution ages ago and the problem wouldnt exist no more
And while your on your 8'th attempt all sweaty, and wore out. I come along with my first attempt after thinking it through and get it done right the first time. It's not always best to spend 2 seconds thinking and jump in. Ever hear of the saying "Fools rush in"
Yes. I don't get the comment that thinking isn't taking action. It's actually been studied that we have less brain power per day than anything else. Thinking is an action of energy that does get depleted. Planning is an action. Consideration is an action. Communication of thinking is action. Joseph in the bible for instance was prized for his dreams and thought that helped pave the way for the country's success. More so than his brothers which had a lot of action but much of it bad and ill thought out. These are proactive actions of thinking. there are also negative actions of thinking such as still pondering when you already know a good course of action and there is only so much time to complete the task. But the idea that some physical change in the world has to come about in order to have action, is flawed IMO.

Thinking about it is also taking action. Of planning the work, before working the plan. If the goal is big enough it requires a plan. And if a person usually fails to plan, their planning to fail.

Mm I don’t agree with that, fear was the emotion that kept us alive in the first place. That made us evolve and make solutions of our problems. Fear to die was one of the emotions that keep us going forward , and also fear keeps you focused in difficult situations. Obviously, everything in excess is bad. But I don’t think fear as a bad thing. We just have to control ourselves. And that is the hardest thing to do. Fear and being nervous is part of a human condition.

I think it's when people are feeling too much when they're thinking too much. Analyse objectivly, pick what you think is the wisest course then act. We can't always be sure we'll get it right but you can't let that paralyse you.
my personal advice at this point:listen to your belly!empathy can mostly tell you if it is a good thing to act or not!the trick is not to be tainted by fear, which means you need to know yourselfe very truely...
The only thing we have to fear is anxiety itself. I have lately realised that this paraphrase of FDR is usually correct. The anxiety says there is a problem even though there are no outside factors that point to there being a problem.
I have had this problem for such a long time. Probably because it's also a weird kind of addiction to anxiety and escaping from solving your problems. It can also feel comfortable to be anxious about problems (that we could actually fix with action), because that's the mode we have been so familiar with throughout our lives. Anxiety, self-criticism, giving up, avoiding, procrastination... These all have a highly addictive aspect, and enable each other. It takes away responsibility and gives us reason to say to ourselves _that's why we didn't make it, why we didn't flourish._ It's so sneaky and deceitful... ...What do you mean, I can actually fix my problems with action and proactive problem-solving?! 😅 Fixing these issues is only possible by taking action. It's a tough process, but it's the road to freedom, especially for guys and gals like us who stay in our own heads too often.

Absolutely right. I “overthink” and end up doing nothing. It’s all fear. Taking my dads advice from when I was a kid : “no lo pienses tanto “ and just getting after it. Feels much better.
Thatts what I struggle with. I've let some good opportunities slip through my hands because of my failure to take action. My self limiting thoughts dont help. I've been working on it though.
Oooh... i needed this at this time...I overanalyze and eventually miss the opportunity...i need to move from thinking and start acting on the best information available in front of me.
I think one of the dangerous mindset I have is the less intelligent I am comared to other, the more time I have to spend thinking to compensate for it. And the more intelligent I am compared to other, the more time I have to spend thinking to capitalize on it. In the end, its the overreliance in planning that makes me hesitate to do anything. My dad, who is a retired officer said: you can have the whole alphabet of plans and there is still a chance real life will fall into the 27th scenario. There is always a chance improvisation is needed
Overthinking can be handled with experience. Compare a situation you are in to a past one from experience or training. There is always some experience you can use for a base of action
I read Mastering Fear by Brandon Webb. He's also a navy SEAL and his book sure has helped me out. But the first step to deal with fear is by making a decision and to commit to it without hesitation.
Idk every person is different. Self analyze and see how fear affects you. For me i find that fear has protected me from making decision which i would later regret, yet in times when action was required i had no fear but more so adreneline amd confidence. Also there are so many people today who speak and act before they think, i think thats a major issue (which i myself sometimes face)
i do this on exams. I couldnt pass a medical school exam and one day my friend was quizzing me. He pointed out that he could see me mouth the right answer, and i would think my way out of it everytime. my score went up 20 points on the next exam.
Analysis paralysis from low confidence is hard to overcome if it is well founded. If you have a habit of making poor or bad decisions (and have endured the consequences thereof), you are correct to have low confidence in acting on the first inclination to cross your mind. You have to spend a lot of time training your mind to recognize good ideas from bad ones so you can again trust your instincts and act without overthinking.
It’s always a balance. Don’t think enough and you make really bad decisions that can result in extreme damage. Think too much and you never move off of square one, which has its own set of damages. The art of life.
@@JK-vc7ie RIght. Most people lean too heavily on one side and the type who watch/listen/post on RUclips on videos like this are the overthinkers as the over-actors are busy flailing wildly at life.
Overthinking a situation comes from a lack of faith in the variables at hand. It is a mental pathway built upon the unreliability of either people or objects in ones life.
For my father and I, our hyper- analytical thinking has been linked to our survival instinct. The issue being despite our creativity and intelligence, we both have depressive disorders that vail fearful and negative thoughts as practical and real. It's as if we have conveniently forgotten that we've chained a wolf outside our door to make the "wolf at the door in your head" real.
I have this issue from time to time. But I've also made choices where I made it too quickly. Hind sight is 20/20 and this is all situational. There are moments when thinking something through is good. There are moments where it can be detrimental. Same thing with making a quick choice. And vice versa. Life isn't this black and white but I respect the moto. Clear the mind making choices far easier to make. In other words, having clarity to make the choice quickly and concisely.
Interesting to see what else is in the room. But I like the dark setting more, my .02. Great advice tho btw sending to someone who needs to hear this rn Saving to a playlist for when I need to rehear it 😁 thx, Jocko!!
I would argue that anxiety and fear are not the same thing, if you have serious anxiety it can be learned behaviour you have to unlearn. I've done some of my best work and acted the fastest while dealing with huge anxiety, I wasn't afraid just anxious. Sometimes fucking t things up wrecks your confidence.

Overthinking is the father of Fear.
Needed that one today thanks..
Interesting to see what else is in the room. But I like the dark setting more, my .02. Great advice tho btw sending to someone who needs to hear this rn

I cannot deal with the amount of light in this podcast.
I would state the diffrence between thinking and dwelling on stuff, thinking it self isn't bad, but you should act instead of dwell
What I’m hearing is it’s time to call people on bullshit and lies
Agreed, the older I get the more bold I am at calling people out
You have to
You better
Comm.Willink Happy 4th of July & the other narrator on the show as well.
"Over thinking, over analyzing, separates the body from the mind..."
Action without thought is dangerous and usually leads to unintended consequences.
Fear of not being perfect,:) nobody is perfect: ) Evey successful people has felt it.. we don't have excuses.
"The king is fond of words and cannot translate them into deeds"
I would argue that anxiety and fear are not the same thing, if you have serious anxiety it can be learned behaviour you have to unlearn. I've done some of my best work and acted the fastest while dealing with huge anxiety, I wasn't afraid just anxious. Sometimes fucking t things up wrecks your confidence.
