The worst place in NYC is 12 blocks away in Times Square. It's called the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

because its a bus terminal. People take train and goes to Penn Station. People can't afford train take the bus and goes to Port Authority bus terminal.

Oh God that is so true. I was visiting a year ago with a tourist group and as part of the schedule we had to take a bus from Port Authority to a mall in NJ and... I guess you have to go there to see it. The platforms are narrow and ugly, The buses for some reason only has a single door like that is so impractical! And I'm tired of seeing exposed pipes and public transport painted in silver grey it's disgusting

    • @vondumozze738
      @vondumozze738 6 лет назад +1

Roger Dominick Yep, PABT is terrible, exhaust-fume stinky, and a few of the signs for the boarding "door" lead you in circles. I missed my bus one night and the law cleared just about everyone out, so I went to NYPenn LIRR level and slept on the floor. I guess I didn't get rousted because I was wearing a suit.
I find Newark Penn much worse on the platform levels especially in weather extremes.

Sadly, this "insider" is blissfully ignorant of Penn Station's layout. What he calls the "Amtrak level" was the original exit level, and would be more accurately called the LIRR level. (The Amtrak level-with its ticket windows and waiting rooms-is the old concourse from which he had descended.) The ugly corridor he erroneously believed to be for "employee access" is the Hilton Passageway. It is aligned with 32nd Street, and was designed to lead to the Seventh Avenue IRT and the Hotel Pennsylvania (whose other names have included Statler Hilton) rather than to connect with tracks and platforms it parallels. I hope this so-called insider knows more about the rest of New York than he does Penn Station.

I wouldn't say Penn Station is great compared to Union Station in DC. As a matter of fact I just came back from Penn Station and had a wonderful time in NYC. However, I'm surprised to find Penn Station would actually be considered a dangerous place. Everyone is so busy with their transfers no one has time to rob you. And you can see NYPD everywhere in NYC. New York is a very safe place.

I know I’m a bit late but for those that don’t know, Penn Station was once one of the most beautiful places in the US- “the biggest station”. Making grand central look like a spec.... but it was demolished. Before the landmark laws New York has a tendency of tearing things down, still kinda does cough cough gentrification in Brooklyn. Growing up on in the early 2000s and going to Penn station I was always amazed... lol and always confused on what those building were in pictures they have hanging up on some columns, being told that that’s what the station looked like was unbelievable. I’m 21 now and I’m honestly just disgusted, knowing it’s history, it shadows my nostalgia....

  • @paulcrowe905

I am a native New Yorker but lived in New Jersey from 1988 - 2009 and commuted on NJTransit for 21 years out of Penn Station. I am also old enough to remember the original Penn Station which was beautiful but torn down in 1963 to build Madison Square Garden which sits on top of the station. I will forgive this NYC transplant for not doing a little research on "Pennsy's" history nor touring the entire station. NJTransit's side is newer and not awful at all. I would give anything to be able to live in NYC again. BTW - if you thought Penn Station is bad, you should check out Port Authority Bus Terminal. Even natives will agree that place is horrible. Just saying.

Penn station is like heaven compared to the Port Authority bus station which is only about 6 blocks up the road on 8th ave.

Entitled tourists and their bags on wheels is the worst thing about Penn Station. One midwestern milk toast guy hit me with his bag on purpose once...didn’t end well for him and his wife. Other than that it’s in and out, the station is not a public square it’s a utility.
Also, 3 years and you’ve never been? You must not get out of the city. Rockefeller Tree lighting is for rookies and who still gets mugged nowadays? Must look like a mark. Bet you fall for the broken bottle scam too.

Never thought the totally underground Penn Station was bad at all. From the time I was a little kid I always enjoyed going through there. In the late 70's, when I was about 14, I had a paper route just to afford to ride around the LIRR system. Penn was the ultimate destination. Loved the newsstands, coffee shops, hot dog joints and pizza places. I'm probably the only one NOT excited about the new building/revamp of Penn.

Yes, there's an old joke about how a drunk staggers out of Penn onto the street and finds one of his drinking pals and says "Boy - I was just down in some guy's basement and you should see the set of trains he has!" - but it's not awful. It basically is a vast basement but it's not dark, there's a great variety of convenience goods and food and drink for sale. The loss of the old building was a tragedy of my distant youth however it's by far not the worst place in New York, by a long shot. A rebuild will be welcome, as long as it's got some esthetics as well as better creature comforts for the public.

Yeah Penn Station is rough but I still dislike Port Authority even more, those narrow escalators that sometimes work, tiny waiting area for the buses, if you miss your bus you have to wait almost a half hour or more for the next one, Port Authority employees who are suppose to help you but instead make it difficult, I used one of those machines where you pay for tickets when the booths are closed & it just took my money, one employee made me walk to another one which was far away from my gate & it didn't work, I asked another employee & they claimed they were busy but were just gossiping with other workers, almost missed my bus & it was the last one smh

I remember visiting NYC five times '85-95, and made a point to walk the "Highline" (not so named , even then but it was difficult but fun) to "Looking" for Penn Station as I had conflicting architectural information; one was even a Beaux Arts/Victorian monolith of spindly riveted girders and overhead glass, no doubt difficult to upkeep. And there was not the resources of 1985-1987 internet at that time. I didn't even go inside, which might have scarred me for life; by then I'd already done the Bus Terminal. I stood there, looking at the pitiful Sixties gold cylinder and asking out loud, "Is THAT all there is?"

Pennsylvania Station used to be a superb building modelled after the Baths of the Emperor Caracalla. Incredibly, the iconoclasts and dimwits of Urban Renewal demolished it to build this drab, ugly, angular, tall, "practical" high rise. Twentieth Century architecture, with a few exceptions, has bequeathed us a plethora of atrocities everywhere on earth. From Soviet rows of sinister apartment buildings to Penn Station and more, the somber and stubborn dogma of "simplicity and functionality" has been an international catastrophe

Honestly, I like New York Penn. The service it provides not just to NYC but also to the whole North East region is unparrelled in the nation. It has NYC subway, LIRR, NJ transit, Metro north and Amtrak services. And despite this, it is in the heart of Manhattan unlike NYC airports which are in Queens.

Tbh no offence, but you should see any train station in India. The stations are almost always OPEN, there are always TOO MANY PEOPLE, and many other countless problems. Oh and, don't forget the random dogs, pigs, cows and other random animals just roaming the place. I'm not sure it happens in train stations, but in a bus station I went a few days ago in a small pilgrim town, the power went out, and it was complete darkness for about 30-40 mins. And in train station, without any notice, a train may show up on the wrong platform (meaning you have to cross LIVE TRACK), a train may show up BACKWARDS, meaning you have to walk from one end to the train to the other (about 10-15 cars). Imagine the pain the handicapped people and seniors feel in those kind of places. Paint is chipping??? Come see the stations here. Then you will understand the real meaning of "crumbling". And you people complain about that decent-looking train station. :|. BTW, I am not putting down India or anything. India is such a beautiful country. I am just saying how the Indian train stations need help and renovation, just like the Penn station is getting a new renovation to fix all the current (mostly nonexistent) issues (compared to the train stations here).

I’ve been to New York as a tourist one time and been to both port authority and penn station. Neither time I was there was it super busy so take what I say with a grain of salt. I was alone both times was extremely lost and confused and it was very hot. Yeah the walls and floor and ceiling were dirty but it wasn’t the worst thing. Port authority wasn’t that bad in my opinion. I did have trouble navigating but eventually found my bus and it was fairly easy. The only real complaint as a tourist I would have for penn station is how confusing it is and how whenever I’d ask an employee for directions they’d just point and say “it’s that way” and then that “way” would branch out to even more corridors.

I grew up going to Penn Station, since I lived and Long Island and it the only station in Manhattan that the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) and I always disagree when my mother says that "this station is terrible" because I always went there and got used to it, so its kinda bad but its ok.
P.S. Grand Central is majestic because its old and is apart of history, the original Penn Station is now a post office, this is the new one they didn't want to spend to much time building.

If I ran a city with New York's level of infrastructure, I would keep those stations the way they are. I'm sure there is a better wording of this, but I'm calling it contemporary aesthetics... things that look aesthetically pleasing to the eye in times of the present. After a while, styles change and we have a desire to look at something newer because we are either bored of the old model or it is badly falling apart. Penn Station doesn't look like the utilities or supports are doing to badly, and it looks like it functions like a real station. I'm a huge believer in functionality and if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Haha, this is nothing. These people are complaining about standard conditions. A station doesn’t have to be perfect for it to work. Take Toronto Union Station for example, the underground parts were under renovations and it was dirty and musty but I thought “Hey, it’s better than sitting in security.”

I passed by the Penn station during my visits to NYC in 2013 and 2014. It is not a bad place at all but it is definitely not perfect like every station. The people were helpful to me and once i was planning to buy cake as a gift on my way to visits friends who were living in nearby wayne, NJ. I managed quickly to find a good shop to buy them before i boarded a train to visit my friends house in Wayne,NJ. Using this station will remain better than getting stucked at the heavy daily traffics of Manhattan and also cheaper than the expensive Taxi cabs of New York. The most interesting thing was seeing the lovely world of the real New York city after leaving the station

There was a really neat proposal to purchase the classic post office structure just across the street and renovate it to become the new Penn Station. Money was spent on the research. Cool factor is that the architecture is similar to that of the original Penn Station that was torn down in 1963. Yet, that idea was tossed and now the proposal is to renovate the current structure (again?).

Have travelled through Penn Station at least twice a month for a while, and...why haven't I seen that passageway? I usually use NJ Transit and Amtrak Concourses, and they're both not the 'employee passageway'. I don't think that November (the first time I go to Penn Station) and August of the same year would make that difference...
