A few years ago we were in mid town on holidays and went to buy a $60 sim. Went to a phone/electronic store that was advertising sims with Simple Mobile. They insisted that we use our credit card for payment and kept talking about overseas calls that we insisted that we would not need. When we got back to our hotel we realised that they had charged us $60 plus another $760. Went back straight away and they said they would refund the $760. They never did. We rang Simple Mobile and they knew nothing about the $760. We had to go through our bank to get the money back. We visit every year from Australia and from then on only buy sims from T Mobile. We did see online lots of people complaining about this store and it astounded me that they where allowed to continue trading.
The street performers for sure, but I got there Instagram info and told them I would make them a video for them, which I did. The monks were all over Central Park
Wrong! Avoid talking to poorly dressed street people and any African American. Basically don't interact with anyone who approaches YOU first. If you need directions ask a cop, go into a business/store as the cashier or pick a nicely dressed person male or female that you approach first. Don't ask someone just standing around, find some going somewhere and stop them saying "Excuse me, can you help me with directions?" They will help you if they can, New Yorkers are helpful.
I’ve been really lucky since I moved here 44 years ago when the city was very scary. Basically I keep my head down walk fast like a New Yorker and do my best tough guy impression. Be aware of your surroundings and if something doesn’t feel right look for a way around it. If you get lost or need help a real New Yorker will pitch in and help you. I’ve walked many tourist to a subway or given directions if it was not too far out of my way. Deep down most of us are decent people.

Nah, if you're honest I'll give you a few bucks. Those people who say, "I want 2 dollars because I want a beer from this store. You can buy it I'll take anything." That person usually gets a beer.

Being such a nice guy, I directed them to a hostel in Queens. They later contacted me and said the hostel cost 1/4 what they paid for the fake sublet AND was quite luxurious.
My wife is from NYC and I have been there many times. It is my experience that the typical New Yorker stereotype of them being so rude is totally unfounded. Yes, fake monks. All Buddhist Monks do not go out and ask for money. If they do, it would be for food. But that doesn't happen here in NYC. It is part of a Buddhist Monk practice in other Asian countries. In Thailand, Monks rely on receiving alms for most of their food. The monks leave the monasteries early in the morning. They walk single file, oldest first, carrying their alms bowls in front of them. Laypeople wait for them, sometimes kneeling, and place food, flowers or incense sticks in the bowls.
A fake monk once asked me if I did yoga because I looked so relaxed. I have scoliosis and an anxiety disorder and had a scowl on my face. He could have at least been better at lying
Ive been living in New Yorker for all my life and I’ve never seen a hot dog for $30...and who would pay for that? And I’m pretty sure every major city has scammers.
Merk lol i have a aunt living in Connecticut she probably lied to me then lol she told me she cant even go out to her own city because of how expensive the food is or how expensive it is to have a good day in the city . Also she did mention the reason its Really expensive is because of Tourist
Yes, every major city has scammers, everywhere in the world. The reason you didn't notice them yet is that they mostly target tourists. How about a cup of coffee in Venice for $50 ?
Being that I lived in NY for 20 years, and that I still commute there weekdays, as well as sometimes on weekends, I never really thought about a lot of these things being a scam. If anyone has any NYC questions, feel free to reach out to me.
I lived in NYC back in the late 60's. And since I moved from there, I've visited about 3 times, and the scams has never change. I have in my scrap book a subway token from 69, one from 81, and a Metro cards form the last trip. Love NY, and hope to go back again.
You didn't mention one more scam in NYC.... i.e., street portraitists... they tell you your portrait will cost, say, $5, but then, when it is ready, it turns out it is $15 because they added a frame or something without having asked you first... because of that scam once I was about to walk away leaving the guy with my portrait but he managed to stop me and kindly asked me to pay him the originally agreed price ;-)
8:11 Where I’m from you choose what to tip even at chain restaurants when I was in NY this past week I hated the added tip it’s sad that they rely on customers to pay their workers even if the service is trash.
OMG I have the feeling I just saw you this moment you were at Times Square ! So sad I didn't see you. I just came to New York this week and thanks to you because of your videos I avoid right now many scams/rips-off until now by playing the dumd tourist or simply act as a local to avoid the scammers as I am completely alone. Might be cool to see you !
Here is a scam I encountered: People standing on the street approaching you to sell cruises to the Statue of Liberty for $75 There is only one company that actually goes to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, Statue City Cruises. They will just take you on a boat passing nearby the Statue of Liberty and coming back, and if that is what you want, you should ride the Staten Island Ferry for free!
I lived in NYC for four years when I was younger and another scam is people selling movies that are still in the theater and not been release to DVD. They go into the theater and film a popular movie that just came out and make copies. What you get is a low quality copy of a movie that you been better off waiting till it had "officially'" been released.
When i first went to the city with my friend, this guy came up to my friend and told him he can have the CD for free and my friend was like ok and then he said it costs 20$ so my friend was like u said it was free and he was like yeah it's free but it's 20$
I went on a new york trip for my band in march. Luckly we went through a travel company so we got advice and easy contact to people who are new york experts. We had homeless people follow us because we denied giving them money
I'm coming with my family to NY for the first time in 2 months and this has been really helpful but I'm not gonna deny its scared me too. I think I'm going to be on hyper alert all the time 😬
Just don't talk to anyone and keep your hand on your wallet at all times. And only pay a buck a slice or a buck dog dammit, or you're ruining it for the rest of us. Have a lovely trip! Great video. Please be smart and be safe, folks! Or visit Norway. They're nice in Norway.

Here's an OLD New York scam: Back in the 80s & 90s, people used to sell porno tapes (VHS) on Canal Street. Me and my punk-kid friends bought one for $10, took it home to Long Island, and it was a blank tape. :-P
I'm visiting NYC in May this year and this is soo good. I have been watching your videos all day and feel so hyped! Can't wait to go to the big Apple! ^^
Ender Plots His videos are great and accurate. Just remember that NYC is actually very safe these days, so don’t let awareness of a few scams become paranoia.
Two variations on the "Good Samaritan Hustle" described at 4:48, both of which my wife and I encountered at Penn Station while getting ready to board trains -- First, if you're struggling with a bunch of bags and other luggage, someone may approach and offer to help you with them. Second, if you look unsure where to go, someone may approach and ask where you're trying to get, then respond "follow me, I'll take you right to it." This, I assume, was a ruse to get us down into some lonely, isolated area for a robbery. In both situations, we fended the people off by saying stuff like "thanks, but we're okay. We've got it. We don't need help but thank you," in a friendly but firm way. We had to repeat those messages just about non-stop while simultaneously moving toward our destination. But we got through both situations just fine.
Great video! I was in midtown with my wife and kids. We were in a rush, ordered some breakfast from a cart, spent $28, and realized soon after that it should have been $18. FYI SE corner of 54th and Broadway, summer of 22. Also, I parked in a garage and was on a day rate. I went to retrieve my car about 30 minutes later in the day than when I had arrived. They had a line and some other people were arguing over the bill. By the time I was checked out and ready to pay they tried to charge me for another full day. I started yelling and said I was going to call the police. They finally took that extra day off.
Lived here for 5 years and a half and seen everything that you have said in both videos. Cant wait to get out, I love the city but it's just too much, especially the taxes.
Talk about the CD Mixtape scam. Guys came up to me asking where I was from/ being friendly and explained they rap against gang violence, racism and things like that and wanted me to have their mix tape for free and started signing it. Then after I took it asked for a tip. The second I said I only had a card and don’t carry cash they got pissed and took the CD back and walked away. I guarantee it was a blank disc... they forgot who I was and moved to where I happened to go into a pizza shop. I came out and they started doing it again and then realized I was the same guy, laughed and started on other people. I won’t get used but I know people fall for this.
I scamed from ice cream truck. Its a dollar in my town and paid 50 dollars for two corned ice cream. No price was listed on truck, my family decided not visiting NYC anymore.
stephanie chung 😂😂 u paid 50 dollars for two ice cream cones instead of walking away once hearing the price? U didn’t get scammed you were just a sucker 🤣
I kept my metro card, and put it in my scrap book alone with 2 subways token from 1969 and 1982. I live in NYC during the 69's, and visited again in the early 80's, and in 2006. Ready to go again.
What a lot of people don’t realize is that the MTA now charge you a $1.00 for another metro card. I keep mines until it expires but also I’m always in the city so it works out.
Great video! I always try to help tourists whenever I see they need help or I get asked. The most common ones I’ve seen are the metro card swipe scam and the “good samaritan” scam.
One time I was looking at a cheap DVD player there. Upon closer inspection, I realized the box said Panasoanic. Box and logo font looked exactly the same as original
i bought my airtrain ticket from a corner shop at jamacain beach and when i used it to get back their to jfk it woudnt work lucky that my nephews one still worked as i woulded had to pay again, had no bothew with the subway pass as i used that for the 4 days
People that sell swipes in the station actually charge 2 bucks a swipe. 75 cents less than the going rate. Actually quite a nice value IF you dont need the transfer.
oh, and if the price is listed and the vendor gives you a higher price at the counter they have to give you the listed price. this is any state you go to. sometimes the stores dont change the price in the register. you dont need to go to b&h. just go to a chain electronic store.
Another awesome video! I don't like going to Times Square, but I was recently there and watched these very talented street performers "extort" money from everyone to see their "big" event LOL. The apartment tips were great! I wasn't scammed, but the realtor was so responsive up until she got the broker fee. I never heard from her again. SMH

Wow we pay here in Tasmania Australia approx (aud) $1.50-$ (aud) 3.00 per hour and some car parks offer the first 30 minutes free or a time frame of free parking, ie a local undercover car parking place in Launceston charges the above rate but has free parking each weekday between the hours of 3:30-5:30pm :) and so many local people here complain about the cost. They don't know how good they have it.
Nice video I’m heading to nyc this end of the month until first week of April just wondering the weather that days and what should I wear it still cold that time? Thanks bro from japan
Hi John been following your blogs, was in NYC last weekend. Got the subway downtown from 49th St. As I was trying to get my tickets guy behind me, saying he was in a rush, offered to help, will admit being a bit flustered. He said the ticket machine was not working. But it was...ended up giving him 60 dollars cash for a card with only 20 dollars on it..and was billed by my credit card too. So if anyone goes on subway find someone trying to rush you, walk away and come back a few minutes later..
When I went to NYC in early November 2018 for the marathon a man I passed on the street was handing out CDs. He offered me one, asked me what my name is and wrote it on the case. Then he asked if I wanted it autographed, I said sure. Then he said that'll be $10. I laughed and walked away.
Went in July of 18’ with my mom. Saw weird people yelling in the subways and a man eating a rat eww but made several friends like a 90 year old Russian American woman on the subway and we talked to her on the way to Coney Island.
Born and raised in nyc make sure you keep your wallet and valuables in your front pockets or jacket pocket zipped up at all times someone can cut your back pocket or book bag from behind and take your stuff
This is a tip everyone should consider EVERYWHERE. I've been to Rome where I've seen things like this happen. People also "accidentally" bump into you and apologize, meanwhile their partner is trying to steal something from your back pockets.
Ooo I’m Newcastle England they do the metro blags. Stuffing socks on fishing line up the change outlets in ticket machines is a fave! And getting used tickets to resell half price. 🤭 industrious I suppose 🤔
I learned one thing from my family in New York and they learned something from me, well if someone asks you what time it is and you see em with a watch run and I told em when they come down to Florida watch out for the men down here cause we crazy but not all
I just moved to Blaine (Minneapolis). I guess I don't know it when I see them. I also don't accept things from strangers to avoid stuff like in the video.
To add to the JFK metro card scam; i've also seen people waiting by port authority where the buses go to newark asking for them! I suppose here you may not have any more use for it but its still the same concept. Why not save it for your next trip!
Not sure it was mentioned but, this happened to me when i was like 15 visiting NY from Europe: Don't buy/listen to CD's from up-and-coming "artists" approaching you on the street, 1 dude approached me, i listened to his stuff, said no thanks, and suddenly i was surrounded by dudes, an intimidating situation for a young kid in a city he doesnt know, all like ey you listened and liked, you can get it for cheap, imma just hold this note for you/break it into smaller ones, suddenly you're out of cash and they gone
Saw the 18 percent auto added service fee on a receipt at a restaurant in little Italy, Manhattan. Receipt also had a space for tip. Always carefully read your receipt and count your change.
Took a day trip to Manhattan during the car show. Went for a walk afterwards. One of those monks came up to me. And handed me a shiny bookmark looking thing with some writing on it. I’m not going to lie I liked it. He told me to keep it but he’d appreciate a small donation. I said sure, had a dollar in my pocket, gave it to him and said thanks. And kept walking. The guy looked pissed. Lol. In terms of parking I definitely suggest booking a spot beforehand. When I go to see a broadway show I use ParkWhiz. I paid iirc $12 for like 6 hours including tax directly on Broadway. If I had just shown up it would’ve been $60/70 + 18% tax.

Oxnard805 1.50-3.00
Merk lol i have a aunt living in Connecticut she probably lied to me then lol she told me she cant even go out to her own city because of how expensive the food is or how expensive it is to have a good day in the city . Also she did mention the reason its Really expensive is because of Tourist
Yes, every major city has scammers, everywhere in the world. The reason you didn't notice them yet is that they mostly target tourists. How about a cup of coffee in Venice for $50 ?
Being a New Yorker you're not likely to see a 30 dollar hot dog..the video is for tourists whom this robbery is aimed at.

Where I’m from you choose what to tip even at chain restaurants when I was in NY this past week I hated the added tip it’s sad that they rely on customers to pay their workers even if the service is trash.
Here is a scam I encountered: People standing on the street approaching you to sell cruises to the Statue of Liberty for $75
There is only one company that actually goes to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, Statue City Cruises. They will just take you on a boat passing nearby the Statue of Liberty and coming back, and if that is what you want, you should ride the Staten Island Ferry for free!
Tip:
New Yorker: Hi
You: Walk to the nearest police officer.
Ariel Santos bruh
nice idea!
Bruh
So many scams in this city!
Scam city
dane mathews As a Manhattaner, PREACH.
Thsts nothing. Come to south africa, you will be shocked
If you wanna now it's even worse in every big European city
2:27 Insomnia in the background. Those cookies are amazing and they deliver
I lived in NYC for four years when I was younger and another scam is people selling movies that are still in the theater and not been release to DVD. They go into the theater and film a popular movie that just came out and make copies. What you get is a low quality copy of a movie that you been better off waiting till it had "officially'" been released.
Yup I tried one movie, the funny thing is I saw a guy standing up in the middle of the movie. That was hilarious 😄
@@esojanacig9230 Low quality movies being filmed illegally.
I’m a native New Yorker but enjoy watching videos like this! Awesome stuff
When i first went to the city with my friend, this guy came up to my friend and told him he can have the CD for free and my friend was like ok and then he said it costs 20$ so my friend was like u said it was free and he was like yeah it's free but it's 20$
Back Pak happened to me to once 😂 I was walking down the street and dude handed it to me then told me I had to pay for it so I gave him a dollar 🤷♂️
I went on a new york trip for my band in march. Luckly we went through a travel company so we got advice and easy contact to people who are new york experts. We had homeless people follow us because we denied giving them money
Poverty makes everyone less safe. We never had as many homeless and poor after 40 years of GOP greed for themselves.
Even though from 2 years ago this came up on my phone .
Looks interesting
Going to watch wuth thumbs up.
I'm coming with my family to NY for the first time in 2 months and this has been really helpful but I'm not gonna deny its scared me too. I think I'm going to be on hyper alert all the time 😬
How did it go? I’m going soon

How was it ?
Love this video!!! Thank you Be Barr for informing everyone about NY. We definitely need this info. Thanks and hugs.
For parking, I park it in Brooklyn by a friend’s house, then take the Subway to Manhattan
That's so nice information.
Will be helpful when I get there.
A big thank dyou.
Norway is damn expensive
I’m in Norway right now😂
@@annika_hew People pay for Nice-ness! 😂🤘
Awesome tips Jon! Thank you! This will be helpful for the future tourists in NYC! I'm looking forward to the next vlog!
Thanks Bing as usual :)
Here Be Barr keep on vlogging you're doing a great job! Please watch my son Jay Jay Maniquis' interview with the Prince of Bavaria on FB. Thank you Jon for your support!
Sure will, always supporting Jay.
Here's an OLD New York scam: Back in the 80s & 90s, people used to sell porno tapes (VHS) on Canal Street. Me and my punk-kid friends bought one for $10, took it home to Long Island, and it was a blank tape. :-P
Thanks John⭐️,for your amazing advice so true 👍🥰
I'm visiting NYC in May this year and this is soo good. I have been watching your videos all day and feel so hyped! Can't wait to go to the big Apple! ^^
:) Thanks.
Ender Plots His videos are great and accurate. Just remember that NYC is actually very safe these days, so don’t let awareness of a few scams become paranoia.
Two variations on the "Good Samaritan Hustle" described at 4:48, both of which my wife and I encountered at Penn Station while getting ready to board trains --
First, if you're struggling with a bunch of bags and other luggage, someone may approach and offer to help you with them.
Nowadays we got google maps, just easy to check on location n everything
Wow this is awesome I live in NYC and I didn't know they did most of these things thanks for the update info
Still love it here.. big cities lead to this type of thing sadly.. i'm filming a Vegas video next ;)
Thank for sharing the tips! Very useful and helpful information.
I know. We already gave ice creams to kids before paying. We wish walked away that time.
Jon, can you post a link to Part 1? Never saw it. BTW, this was great! David enjoyed it too!!🙂
Thanks ! Scroll down I put a link in the description of the video .
Everythings a damn scam in nyc. including rent
Miki N it’s nyc sweetheart.
Great info, thanks for the tips. Many of those scams I would have never seen coming.
I don't know why anybody would go to one of those little electronics stores in NY. They've been ripping off tourists since the 1980's.
The scam with tampered ATMs we had in Sweden too. There's more safety on the machines now, but we are still told to make sure no one see our pin code.
I have seen or witnessed a few of these scams but have been lucky to avoid them. Good advice.
Great videos. Can you recommend a diner for breakfasts close to the Conrad in mid-town?
You just saved soo many of my foreign friends. You’re the Goat my guy👌🏼
We were approached by the Monks in Central Park, and the cd scammers in Times Square...! 🤦🏻♂️
Ahh the fake monk scam we have them here in Sydney as well very informative the video 👍👍👍
Thanks for the tips!! Just got back from NYC and witnessed some of these....and I was able to just walk away from them!!
Don’t go to B and H! Their prices are wayyyyyy higher than online prices!
Agreed butttt it is fun to test out equipment and compare it in store
Definitely fell for the comedy show one my first time in NY lols! Great video as usual!
Great video!
I always try to help tourists whenever I see they need help or I get asked.
The most common ones I’ve seen are the metro card swipe scam and the “good samaritan” scam.
good to know with BH, i will bye me a new Camera when i come back to NY in June :) #Greetings from Germany and good Video again
The fake monk got me when I was little lmao I get traumatised
One time I was looking at a cheap DVD player there.
Upon closer inspection, I realized the box said Panasoanic. Box and logo font looked exactly the same as original
Haaaahaha! I remember the fake monk got me when I went to New Orleans! Damn bracelet! Lol. But this was great, I love these videos! Very informative!
i bought my airtrain ticket from a corner shop at jamacain beach and when i used it to get back their to jfk it woudnt work lucky that my nephews one still worked as i woulded had to pay again, had no bothew with the subway pass as i used that for the 4 days
People that sell swipes in the station actually charge 2 bucks a swipe. 75 cents less than the going rate. Actually quite a nice value IF you dont need the transfer.
they don't wanna see POC make money lol
oh, and if the price is listed and the vendor gives you a higher price at the counter they have to give you the listed price. this is any state you go to. sometimes the stores dont change the price in the register.
you dont need to go to b&h. just go to a chain electronic store.
SMH
Yah, all these things happen... a shame.
The only time I go through time square is to get to the port authority or get to a broadway show. Time square is totally a trap.
I am visiting New York in October and these videos are really helpful thank you. Keep up the good work
05:53 scam happened to me on my trip to Manhattan. I was like wtf
hahaha same. it happened to me when i was trying to go to jfk
Thank you for educating me
The only thing someone tried to sell me on Time Square was marijuana...please, I'm from Boulder.
Getting to this late as fuck lol but he’s saying he’s from Boulder because it’s one of the best places in the country to get great quality legal weed. Colorado in general is such a beautiful place I loved denver
Lol
Wow we pay here in Tasmania Australia approx (aud) $1.50-$ (aud) 3.00 per hour and some car parks offer the first 30 minutes free or a time frame of free parking, ie a local undercover car parking place in Launceston charges the above rate but has free parking each weekday between the hours of 3:30-5:30pm :) and so many local people here complain about the cost. They don't know how good they have it.
Nice video I’m heading to nyc this end of the month until first week of April just wondering the weather that days and what should I wear it still cold that time? Thanks bro from japan
Be prepared for cold .. or a little warmer . Check the 10 day forecast before going . Early April is unpredictable
Here Be Barr thank you bro.. your videos helps me a lot
Haha that happened to me in 2015 and he told me I can give him what I wanted and so I gave him 2 dollars and when I got home the CD was empty 😂
Went in July of 18’ with my mom. Saw weird people yelling in the subways and a man eating a rat eww but made several friends like a 90 year old Russian American woman on the subway and we talked to her on the way to Coney Island.
Your videos have been great, helpful.
From Sydney.
I was ripped off for renting a shared room via air bnb.. Guy didnt pick my call whem I arrived.. Damned that guy
5:25 the Jamaicans on Sutphin Blvd 🤣🤣🤣MetroCard machines jammed? You selling swipes? OH YOU THOUGHT!!! I bring my own MetroCards
Right !!

People also "accidentally" bump into you and apologize, meanwhile their partner is trying to steal something from your back pockets.
here be barr is the my favourite you tube channel
:) Thanks !!
Ooo I’m Newcastle England they do the metro blags. Stuffing socks on fishing line up the change outlets in ticket machines is a fave! And getting used tickets to resell half price. 🤭 industrious I suppose 🤔
😱🤗 bright lights and rich city I love New York....🤗🤩🥰😍
I learned one thing from my family in New York and they learned something from me, well if someone asks you what time it is and you see em with a watch run and I told em when they come down to Florida watch out for the men down here cause we crazy but not all
I always ask the vendor "how much"?
Exactly. Not just in NY. Everywhere. "I don't see a price, how much is that?"
These tips apply to any major city, not just NYC. I live in the twin cities, Minnesota and see con men everyday. Great video!
Yep.

Or why not help someone make some money from something you have no more use for? Seriously why are you guys so opposed to helping other humans?
Not sure it was mentioned but, this happened to me when i was like 15 visiting NY from Europe: Don't buy/listen to CD's from up-and-coming "artists" approaching you on the street, 1 dude approached me, i listened to his stuff, said no thanks, and suddenly i was surrounded by dudes, an intimidating situation for a young kid in a city he doesnt know, all like ey you listened and liked, you can get it for cheap, imma just hold this note for you/break it into smaller ones, suddenly you're out of cash and they gone
Insanely helpful! Thank you, sir!
Saw the 18 percent auto added service fee on a receipt at a restaurant in little Italy, Manhattan. Receipt also had a space for tip. Always carefully read your receipt and count your change.
Did you ask back for your money that extra tip added?
Thia guy should have more than 74000 subscribers.. You do a great job, i like to watch your viedos. Thank you!

If I had just shown up it would’ve been $60/70 + 18% tax.
musicISlyf1 It would be cheaper to just take a parking ticket
