  • The German super battleship "Hindenburg" has recently through a miracle broken out into the Atlantic to hunt merchant vessels. In response the British have significantly increased the convoy protection but they only have their older battleships to do this.
U-799 Has spotted a convoy but through bad luck it has already used up it's torpedoes so it has radioed the "Hindenburg" to engage the heavily defended Convoy XQ-76...

    1942: Battle of the Atlantic
After a succesfull mission where the Bismarck managed to escape the British navy after sinking the Hood, she managed to return to her home waters in Wilhelmshaven, where she is united with her now complete sister ship, the Tirpitz.
In Juli 1942, the Bismarck and the Tirpitz, together with the heavy cruisers Admiral Hipper, Prince Eugen, the new Seydlitz and 5 escorting destroyers have the orders to hunt down convoy PQ-17 inbound for the Soviet Union. The land battle between the German and the Soviet armies is going into the German's favor. In order to get the Soviet war machine to its knees, the Germans use everything they have at their disposal. The Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are still moured at Brest suffering torpedo damage launched by destroyers in their previous convoy raid. These ships won't be available.
The British meanwhile, know that the Soviet Union needs this convoy after previous hunts by the submarines. They send the Home Fleet to protect the transports. The Home Fleet is supplemented by a squadron from the US navy after suffering earlier losses at the hands of the German battleships, most notably Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth battleships. The hunt for PQ-17 as a result, is destined to become the climatic naval battle between the Allies and the Axis in the Atlantic; the winner will decide the outcome of World War 2. If the Axis lose, the Z-plan would be terminated and all work on the H-39 class battleships would stop. These ships aren't scheduled for completion until 1944.
The Royal Navy has more battleships coming from other convoy duties after hearing the deployment of the German ships, but these wont be arriving in the Area of Operations until the evening. You have 6 hours to destroy all opposition before the British reinforcements make it to the AO. If these reinforcements are able to make it, you will be cut off from escaping and your fleet will face total destruction. Further, make sure that the fleet stays intact after the mission.
    Details:
    Allied forces (1935 tech)
    3 Battleships
    2 Heavy Cruisers
    4 Light Cruisers
    8 Destroyers
    15 transports
    German Forces (1940 Tech)
2 Battleships (limit of 60.000 tons)
    3 Heavy Cruisers
    5 Destroyers
    Starting range: 12km
    Time limit: 6 hours.
Mission objective: destroy the transports and all escorting ships.
    Win conditions:
    Both Battleships need to survive
At least 1 heavy cruiser needs to survive.

they had to scuttle the ship, because more bombardment from the allies, would have been even more devastating for the remaining crew. You know, exploding magazines and shells. so it was a logical decision to scuttle the ship, because it was beyond repair anyway. and i am fairly certain that the Bismarck would have been able to outrun the Rodney (23knots max) and escort with her 30 knots, if the rudder wasn't damaged. That's why i said lucky swordfish. Just because the Bismark was a non-combatant by this point, doesn't mean, they could've sunk her before the Bismarck reached safe waters for her. In my Opinion, the damaged Rudder was the most certain cause of the sinking of the Bismarck.

I have a scenario below if you want it.
    The U.S has invaded Canada.
The British empire has declared war on the US and Britain's ally Russia has sent a fleet to the west coast of Canada to defeat a large American fleet preparing to bombard Vancouver.
The American fleet consists of 2 battleships, 1 battle cruiser, 3 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser, and 2 heavily armed transports.
The Russian fleet is mostly composed of standard ship designs but their battleships are of quite a strange design with at least 1 single turret.
The Russian fleet consists of 4 battleships, 1 light cruiser, 2 heavy cruiser's, 1 destroyer and a torpedo boat.
Due to the engaement taking place in the barents sea, the range will be quite short
This takes place in 1920 tech is similar.
    Another scenario
This development in Canada has given the Japanese their chance to strike!
The Japanese attack just outside Vladivostok and face a small and technologically inferior fleet.
The Japanese fleet consists of: 1 battleship, 2 heavy cruisers, 4 dd's and 3 torpedo boats.
The Russian fleet consists of 1 old and very strangely designed battleship, 2 light cruisers, 4 old destroyers and the Kamchatka.
This takes place in 1920 but the Russians are using 1905-1915 tech.

I found german BBs as a great base for the 1940 super dreadnought, you can easily place 33cm or bigger turrets in a way you will have 3 in line and 4 side bow turrets, one on hull, second on barrette, third on tower with two side turrets between barrette and tower and another two in this side cut-ins in the tower. im still experimenting with the concept, it may be potentially a devastating anti cruiser ship in the campaign.

    Scenario idea: Cascadia's First Sailing.
Alternate history where WWII never happens and instead the 1940s are just a big naval arms race between America and Japan. In this scenario, the US Navy discovers that Japan is building the A-150 class super-battleships (you know, that 20-inch gun one) and as so America decides to build their own super-battleship that's bigger than the Yamato. The requirements for this American battleship is as follows:
Name: USS Cascadia, naming it after a whole region of multiple states instead of just one due to its supposedly massive size.
Tonnage: 85000-95000 tons. It can't be stupidly overmassed.
Design: Basically just a supersized Montana, 2 turrets forward, 2 aft.
Speeds: 36 knots. This thing is designed to catch everything including Japanese battlecruisers.
Technology: 1940s, max-tech on all options.
Gun caliber: 18-inch triple barrel on all turrets.
Armor: At least 16-18 inches main belt and 20-24 inches for the turrets as this thing needs to take literally everything.
    The battle:
War breaks out between the US and Japan some time in the late 1940s due to disagreements over oil (classic America) and both navies send their biggest completed battleships towards Midway Island. Due to industrial disadvantage, Japan has yet to complete their A-150 designs and thus can't send their 20-inch guns into the fight (also because 20-inch guns aren't in the game). Instead, the Japanese Center Force dispatches 3 battleships and 10 heavy cruisers to intercept the spearheading USS Cascadia and her escorting 2 heavy cruisers which are on their way to sink the Japanese carrier fleet. The battle begins at a range of 15000 meters.
Technically attempt 2 but I reworked it for more design freedom from the first time.

Actually, during this time period, the late 1800's, early 1900's, the German naval doctrine called for engagement ranges that were some of the shortest in the world, the only nation who's ranges were shorter, was the French, who's doctrine called for something like holding fire until sub-10km, while the British had a doctrine that was further than the German's and then came the USA which was predicting engagement ranges would be something like +22km. Drachinifel talks about it in one of his more recent Drydock episodes.

My understanding is that the Kriegsmarine chose to stick with 2 gun turrets because they achieved a higher rate of fire. Bismarck class BBs could fire about 3 salvos a minute while other WW2 era BBs, which mainly had 3 "or in the case of the French 4 gun turrets," could only fire around 2 salvos a minute. The turrets on the Richelieu class were kind of unique because even though there were 4 guns in a turret, there was an armored bulkhead that ran down the inside of the turret, which basically created 2 "sub turrets" with a pair of guns in each. The theory was that if the turret was penetrated, only 1 pair of guns would be knocked out and the other 2 would still be able to fire.

DAMN! I thought my idea would have a chance... but then again I didn't display the forces. I'm going to post it again:
Due to a series of circumstances, the US has joined the Central Powers in 1917 due to a screwup by a very enthusiastic British Task Group sinking one escorting light cruiser and several transport ships.
The USN has decided to take over Canada before sending a force to Europe to break the British Blockade. This mission is in support of this campaign. Due to the situation, several fronts (including the home front) have their forces drained to ensure that the supply line to Canada is open.
    The Forces available are:
    US:
    4 Battleships
    6 Heavy/Armored Cruisers
10 Light Cruisers (2 being Omahas)
    10 Destroyers
    Britain:
    5 Battleships
    7 Heavy/Armored Cruisers
    9 Light Cruisers
    9 Destroyers
    24 Transports
Objective: the US must sink all transports and at least the battleships, everything else is secondary. The British must escort the transports out of the battle zone, sinking the US group is secondary.

1914 the German East Asiatic Squadron under Von Spee attempted to get back to Germany, by crossing the Pacific. This lead to the Battle of Coronel and the 1st Battle of the Falklands, whilst he sent the Emden as a lone raider West. What if instead of going East he took all his forces West as the Allies feared.
The main search for the Germans was carried out by the Japanese, The primary interception force being the Semi-Dreadnought Satsuma and two Protected Cruisers the Yahagai and the Hirado. The Satsuma spent the rest of the war escorting ANZAC convoys across the Indian Ocean.
Suggestion is that Spee's complete force goes West and catches the Satsuma escorting a troop convoy.
German forces are 2 Armoured (heavy) Cruisers and 4 Protected (light) Cruisers. Spee's ships were the best gunnery ships n the German Navy. They all dated from around 1906 to 1908
Japanese forces would be 5 troop transports, 2 Protected (light) Cruisers and the semi-dreadnought, Satsuma. 20,000 Tons, built 1906, 4 x 12" centerline guns, 12 x 10" side mounted guns, only because they couldn't get more 12". All off those where in twin turrets. 12 x 5" in casemates, 8 x 3" guns. Belt was 9" cemented krupp armour and a top speed of 18.25 knts from triple expansion engines and twin shafts.
If the Satsuma had been fitted with all 12" as originally intended she would have been the worlds first all big gun battleship, predating HMS Dreadnought. Which means that future Dreadnought style ships would have had to be known as Satsumas. That doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Ultimate Admiral : Satsuma, it might not sell so well.
I think you should design something similar to the Satsuma or at least in a Semi-Dreadnought style, and see if you can wipe out the East Asiatic Squadron while at the same time getting the troop ships to safety.

tbh I think the main use for torpedoes on a battleship is to finish off ships you've wrecked with gunfire but are being stubborn about actually sinking. Not hard to hit a burning hulk that can't move with a torpedo, and it'll probably sink it a lot faster than pounding away with guns until the hull finally runs out of HP.

I think the Hindenburg is the coolest design you built so far. It is reasonably realistic in terms of overall design, something I can imagine seeing IRL and still be practical to a certain degree while still being unique. The design elements make sense and not some weird meme or gamey design. I mean except the fact is a 100k tonnes but still it looks awesome. It strikes the perfect balance of a crazy unique design while also being realistic and cool.
    ________________________
As for the 'range' debate, I think it depends on the goal of the battle. For meme ships, try hard super ship, challenges or experimental build strategies, then I think it is fine to go for super-short range since it is not limited by the scenario and you should go for what is most effective in game.
If you are building for a alternate history or RL scenario, then you should pick what is realistic. Always having maximum range is NOT realistic, anyone that tell you otherwise really don't have a clue on what they are talking about. The slider exist because it is a trade-off between tonnage and operating range, something real navies also have to decide. Real navies didn't make their ships 90% fuel tanks.
The Italians operating in the confines of the Mediterranean will only have short range as evidently true in history.
The British will have middle ranges. The British have a vast empire so their ships do have to go very far to protect its merchant ships, but also for the same reason, they have many coaling and refueling stations which reduces the requirement for extremely long operating ranges.
US navy who need to operate in the vast expanse of the Pacific will have extremely long range as they did not have as much colonies as the British. The Japanese will likewise have long range, although slightly shorter due to their strategy of creating a defensive perimeter thus not needing to go as far as the USN.
The US had always planned to go on the offensive in the Pacific (through-ticket to Manila, and island hopping are both offensive) while the Japanese intended to play defensive, lure in the USN and whittle them down. This is reflected IRL where US ships had longer operational range than the Japanese despite both being a Pacific power.
Of course, you don't need to be 100% realistic. It is just a game and a video, however it is always a nice addition to bring a scenario to life.

Agree, his design this time looks good and kinda realistic (excluding the super heavy displacement and secondaries).
I always like the look of battleship design with all (or almost all) forward main turret like this.
Really good for rushing onto the enemies.
I'm also a bit surprised he managed to balance the ship's weight offset, in a lot of videos I've watched, alot of guys designing the Nelson clone in this game end up creating unbalanced design with horrible forward offset.

Got a scenario for you that's a bit different from your usual fair.
1940s United States vs late 1910s Japan
Scenario: Following the success of the *Erie* class gunboats, the USN has decided to commission another class of four ships following a similar design scheme that manages to get around the treaties of the period.
All four members of the class had been deployed as a single squadron to the Pacific when war had broken out. As of right now, they are the heaviest units available in the region and thus have been given the important mission of intercepting a troop convoy heading to the Philippines composed of five transports and escorted by a squadron of older ships, one light cruiser and three destroyers. The convoy must be turned away, preferably sunk.
    Limitations:
No more than 6.1 million per ship
No more than 4” of armor
    No caliber greater than 6”
No greater than 2,830 long tons on full load, no less than 2,000 long tons
Top speed no less than 20 knots
    No torpedoes
Range must be significant enough to allow for an ocean crossing at cruise speeds. (That should shut up everyone since now it’s part of the scenario)
Optional (Prefered, but not required): 2x2 6” cannons in chase layout

    USA against Japan
    You play as USA
The Americans attack the defense fleet of an island fortress. The American fleet consists of older ships, slightly modified, Tech is 1935.
    The fleet consists of:
    1 BB
    2 CA
    2 CL
    Construction specifications for the battleship:
A dreadnought hull must be used
The Japanese can only use slightly modified ships from WW1 (tech 1918-1920 your choice), which they try to compensate by more ships.
    2 BB
    4 CA
    3 CL
    5 TB
Victory: If the whole fleet is destroyed or if the Japanese retreat only the TBs may escape

Bruh that turret setup is sup-optimal.
By collating 3/4's your firepower upfront you make it easier for the enemy to destroy. If you ran 50-50 theyed have to fire at either end of your ship if they wanted to declaw you.
That setup may work for a pure bow-in strat. But you're not bow in at any point during this battle.
you COULD orient yourself around a strat of pure bow-in. But then you limit yourself to that strat to the detriment of using any other, since ONLY bow-in benefits from triple front turret.
This is more a snipers set-up. Normally youd triple mount in the rear, but if you want to force the enemy to turn in pursuit, rather than engage and then snipe as you retreat, triple front is a good method to do that and, because you force the turn (if they want to fight back), they present broadsides to you, which makes triple front pretty viable, though not specifically intuitive.
IF you wanna brawl, ditch the fourth turret entirely and add more secondaries. Secondaries are the brawlers weapon and are, overall, a superior option to more main-guns due to: more ammo, more turrets (harder to declaw, more options for multi-targeting, better triangulation and thus higher overall accuracy, larger ammo storage capacity, and lower likelihood of catastrophic loss of ammunition due to a citadel pen.) All the things in the brackets are clutch when it comes to brawling, because you're probably going to end up engaging multiple enemies, taking lots of hits, and generally being the center of attention, so longevity and durability are coeval with the ability spit hot-fire with the dial turned to eleven.
suggested build is: rear mounting as many secondaries as possible. ( theyre smaller size allows for superior arcs, anyway so you dont lose much in the way of fire power, and the heavy ordnance up front comes with heavy armor up front, as well, meaning you can charge the enemy, take their incoming on the chin, and then present minimal boradside while bringing most of your guns to bear once in optimal secondary range). Use larger secondaries where able and try to stay to a single secondary caliber. Use as many accuracy and Rate of Fire mods as possible (to make every salvo a potential CA killer and vastly improve your chances of declawing or blinding ANY BB's, thus turning them into floating targets. This also allows you the flexibility to engage DD's with no fear since you've got the RoF to counter their agility) Spend the rest of the weight on armor, or speed (speed adjustments are superior to armor in dealing with torps if you can detect them reliably, and also allow you to disengage and dictate the terms of battle more effectively while also allowing you to control the range more precisely. But on the other hand, armor is armor, lol)
Sorry for long post, good luck, admiral.

*Battle of Leyte Gulf Taffy 3 vs Center Force*
As this is an alternate universe without carriers, escort carriers will be considered as light cruisers because of their armament and striking capability.
You (1935 US) will build 3 CLs and 7 DDs. The enemy (1938 Japan) will have 4 BBs, 6 CAs, 2 CLs and 11 DDs. As Taffy 3 did not actually sink the Japanese vessels but rather pushed them away, you win if you sink at least 10 ships; however at least 1 BB and 3 CAs must be sunk.

    Scenario: Becoming the Hunters
May 1944, D-day preparations are nearly complete, however the German navy is a persistent thorn in the side of the Allied beast, with millions of tons of shipping still being sunk monthly. You decide it's been more than enough now, and go to Churchill himself for permission to take a task force and do something about it. Your wish is granted! However, due to D-day preparations, you end up being stuck with a class of two older Battleships and their accompanying Battlecruiser (this is how Britain ordered their battleship classes durring the time period), which you have further suplumented by a small division of light cruisers that were previously placed under your command.
By some miracle, you find and manage to sneak up on a significant portion of the German raiding fleet...
    Restrictions:
    You will build the BB's
Year: 1920, Germany will be 1935
    Starting distance is 12km
Range must be long (you have an empire to maintain)
and you cannot have guns larger than 15 inch (Britain didn't have a steelworks capable of producing anything larger)
    Britain:
    2 BB's
    1 BC
    3 CL
    Germany:
