Once Suicidal, Now I Help Other Youths With Depression

  • Mocked in secondary school for his voice and the way he looked, Ryan attempted suicide by drowning himself. When his bullies found out, they asked, "Why aren't you dead yet?"
Years of bullying made him fear going to school, and when he sought help from family members and the school counsellor for depression, they deemed him "too sensitive".
The turning point came when he started to attend polytechnic, and a lecturer made him the class chairperson. "She said that no matter what happened to me in the past, she still thinks I have the potential to do well... That was when the sudden realisation came in... I have the power to rewrite my narrative."
Ryan founded The Catalyst Collective (@thecatalyst.sg on Instagram) in 2021 to help other young people struggling with mental health.

We should be thankful that we got people like him. It takes a lot to overcome depression (or any other disorder or difficult phase) and he still wants to help others who is going through something similar to what he had. He saved his own life, and is now saving more lives. Definition of respect.

That teacher should be named and shamed. You don't need to be a trained counselor to know that mocking your students suicidal thoughts is not ok

You will be shocked, some teachers actually have no compassion and low EQ who will do this kind of thing.

The teacher needs to be retrained. I just feel so sorry for the kids that have teachers like that and schools that don’t support their students’ mental health.

Mocking people, especially youths, just show how pathetic a person is. His teacher doesn't fit to be a teacher.

Never ever dismiss or trivialise anyone's concern or fears. Suppose a child comes to you and say that he is fearful of certain individuals at school or fearful of any future interactions with any adults in any other social setting. In that case, the last thing we should say is "stop being too sensitive" or "you are thinking too much". their expression of fear is a shout for help. Your response could basically save their life.

Yes. I have trouble with that too. When my siblings are rude to me infront of my psrents, they just ignore or laugh with it at me. When i get angry or upset they say im too sensitive despite my siblings trying to say they are only joking with me. When tables are turned they all get so much mad at me..i will always be told stop starting a fight or stop bullying others. Life is awful. Especially my life.

Wow what a touching story! I really feel for him. It’s the worst feeling to feel like the whole world is against you. So happy to see he persevered and turned his life around for the better. That amazing teacher who believed in him really made up for that awful one who mocked and dismissed him!

This struck a very chord with me because I was bullied and ostracised for close to 3/4 of my sec sch years as well. It involved cyber bullying too. I didn’t really seek help from school staff but i think it was also the way I dealt with it. I was lucky that i didn’t develop depression and anxiety from it. But I still grew up to have heavy social insecurities because of the environment I was in during my formative years. Thank you Ryan, for speaking up about this topic.
P.S. I also met my closest friends and nice ppl during my time in poly, whom made me realise that I was deserving of genuine friends and care :’)

Is this the message that i need to hear today? Yes.
I have been suicidal more than once throughout my life. Circumstances that made me believe i was alone and misunderstood. Not having family for support was difficult that at one point i was estranged with my mother. How i made it, i don't know.
I guess we just try to survive. We push down the depression and loneliness hoping it will go away. I was aware it shouldn't be that way, that i should seek help. But in my culture there is always that stigma regarding mental health. So i simply "moved" on.
Two years ago i moved to a different country, married a supportive man who understands well my situation. We have always had the "talk" of me speaking to a professional, this time it wasn't just avoidance on my part that was holding me back but there was shame as well. I am ashamed of myself for not holding it together and that by now i should know how to deal and handle my own trauma.
It is a cycle i need to break, that i have to face and process because i deserve to be free of being my own enemy. Because i am scared of going down that dark path again.

I hope that this world will become a better place someday. Some people should really be ashamed of their words, actions and thoughts.
I'm glad Ryan is okay and I hope all the victims will be. I think a lot of us need to learn to love ourselves and our bodies.
I think that we are all beautiful in our own way and I think that there is no such thing as an ugly person, but unfortunately there are mean people, ill-educated and arrogant, and those are the ones who abuse others.
I hope that we will be able to lend a hand and help those who need us!

No such thing as bad student, Only bad teacher. I've experience this myself that my teacher knows that the system is wrong yet when I rebel against the system she blame me for not able to adapt to the wrong system. Just stop being educators if you just want to be a lap dog - and yes she resign which I think it's so irresponsible.

Teachers are not only Role-Models but they should -
    * transform the lives of students in their classes,
*motivate their students to be the best they can be. No need to compare themselves with other classmates acadenic achievements.
*never Poke fun of weak students or students who are "different from others" ,
*encourage students to have goal option B when goal option A could not be achieved.

I mean, it's expected that the parents and the older generation will not be able to understand his situation. Even I will say tough it up and try to endure it as a guy in his 40s. I know some of you will not agree with my point of view, but this world is ugly, and as you grow older, you will realize that. If your mental state can easily break, I'm afraid you will have a tricky situation as time progress, and yes, no one will help you.
You can call this toxic masculinity, but my mentality saved me several times when I hit rock bottom and survived. For all the young guys who will read this, try to help yourself and be extremely tough for your own good.

In Sec 1, I used to be an innocent quiet person that doesn't socialise with people a lot and talk to people and I didn't really have any friends. I was friends with a guy in Sec 2 and He gave me an impression that when someone is a very good friend to me, I will trust that person and tell him everything and have no boundaries among others.
And At the start of Sec 2, he was like a very good friend to me and he was like wanting me to tell everything as well and have absolutely no boundaries among people and that is where he psychologically change the way I think of how I communicate with people in a very wrong way making it a common habit for me to tell everything to people who are very good to me and have no boundaries among others.
And plus he was like wanting me to be attached to him. That is the reason why it badly affected my relationships with people like my teachers, Mr Cai, Mr Roy and my friends, Ejin, Aunty Vera in Sec 3 and Sec 4 because he just psychologically change and destroy the way I communicate with people which led me to becoming a habit of doing that.
And If Mr Cai, Mr Roy, Ejin and Aunty Vera were to ever come across this comment, I just want to tell you that I didn't want to make you all feel uncomfortable and angry with me and Sorry if I did make you all feel angry and uncomfortable with me and It wasn't my intentions of doing that. It is just that the guy in Sec 2 just change the way I communicate with people making me wanting me to tell everything to you. I told this to Garren and I hope that he helps me with it.
