    Hi Garden Friends! In this video I share with you some really lovely shade garden perennials that I'm loving in my own garden. I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with shade plantings in this newer garden space. I hope this video serves as a "how to" select complimentary shade plants and offers you some inspiration for your own shady garden spaces. There is still lots of color and beautiful interest to be had in a shade garden. Thanks for watching - Steph🌱Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b

    I place medium size rocks and broken pots around my dark plants as it helps make the plant pop against my dark brown mulch. It also brings in natural elements in the landscape.

    Your garden is so very pretty. All the colors and textures are a feast for the eyes. I love huecheras, but they don't like my sandy, maybe salty soil. Every time I put one in the ground, it dies. I have two that have been in pots for years; they are beautiful! I found that bunnies like huecheras also. Thanks for sharing your beautiful spaces with us. Shout out to George,an amazing garden assistant!

    I love your garden! It’s always so neat and put together looking. You and your husband do a great job. I started a RUclips channel (Patty B. Gardening), but our hot, humid Mississippi summers hit a little different than yours, I think. Plus, we’re very rural with very few garden centers or plant departments at the big box stores that even have any plants available this time of year. I guess they’ve had it with the heat and humidity too.😂 But I will not allow myself to be envious of what you have. I’m proud for you, and I’m proud of what I’m able to do in my rural area! Keep up the good work!👍

    Hi, Steph! Question - Will you plant the plants that are in your shade containers out into the landscape or will you overwinter them in their containers? I have some Japanese Forest Grass in containers but I'm assuming the will do better overwinter in the ground. What do you plan to do?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Kerry! I will eventually, although for this season, I will see if they will overwinter in the containers. Fingers crossed they come back. The rule of thumb for container plants is that they should be at least 2 zones hardier than your zone. We'll see what happens. Although I will say that like you, I am most skeptical about the Japanese forest grass. They other 2 (heuchera and fern), I am pretty comfortable leaving in the container. I'll be sure to provide an update on what my final decision is as we approach fall, and the time comes to overwinter plants.🌱

      It was really early so a bit cooler, it did warm up by the time I was done planting. I don't like the feel of dirt and sweat on my knees when I'm kneeling on my kneeling pad, sliding around etc. feels icky. So I always wear either a capri legging or these old jeans when I'm planting, sometimes my gardening bib (overalls), but immediately after I was showering and into shorts and a tank top. Then hiding in the house in the A/C. It has been brutally warm with the humidity. I'm just running out early morning to water, and staying indoors lately.

    Hi Steph.....I have a question about your larch tree which this episode wasn't about but I thought maybe you could give me some ideas. I have a very asymmetrical front landscape on the front of my house. What's on the left side is basically on the right so you kind of can get a picture. My one 5 year old weeping cherry died and thought of replacing it with a larch tree remembering that you had one in your yard. I know it won't flower but besides larch there are weeping hemlocks and also weeping redbuds too. How large has yours grown? Have you had any issues? I'm in zone 6b and it will be on the west side of the house if that helps. If whatever I put in doesn't coordinate with the other side we may consider something else.....thanks!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  4 месяца назад

      Hi Sara, Lots of watering early morning so they have that moisture through the height of the heat. If you have things that are very sensitive, you can shade things with umbrella's if they are down low even a rain umbrella can help. I've even used patio chairs placed over plants or placed in front to cast shade behind if needed. But mostly, I shade things that were either newly planted or transplanted. Other than that most things are on their own with just a little extra watering. Hope this helps.
